弟子规，圣人训，首孝弟，次谨信。
Students' Rules, Sage's Instructions, first filial piety & brotherhood, then careful & trustworthy.
泛爱众，而亲仁，有余力，则学文。
Mass love crowd, & close to Ren (humanity), have excess efforts, then learn composition.
父母呼，应勿缓；父母命，行勿懒。
Parents' calling, to be no delay; parents' instructions, action no laziness.
父母教，须敬听；父母责，须顺承。
Parents' teachings, should respect listen; parents' scoldings, should smooth accept.
冬则温，夏则清；晨则省，昏则定。
Winter make warm, summer make cold; morning make call, evening make sleep.
出必告，反必面；居有常，业无变。
Out definitely tell, back definitely inform; live has routine, occupation no change.
事虽小，勿擅为；苟擅为，子道亏。
Tasks although small, must not self decide; if self decide, son Tao (way) damage.
物虽小，勿私藏；苟私藏，亲心伤。
Things although small, must not self keep; if self keep, parents' heart hurt.
亲所好，力为具；亲所恶，谨为去。
Parents what love, efforts to fulfill; parents what hate, careful to get rid.
身有伤，贻亲忧；德有伤，贻亲羞。
Body has hurt, make parents worry; virtues have hurt, make parents shameful.
亲爱我，孝何难；亲恶我，孝方贤。
Parents love me, filial piety what difficult; parents hate me, filial piety then good.
亲有过，谏使更；怡吾色，柔吾声。
Parents have mistakes, correct accurately; use soft expressions, use soft voice.
谏不入，悦复谏；号泣随，挞无怨。
Correct not in, happy time repeat correct; crying follow, get beaten no regret.
亲有疾，药先尝；昼夜侍，不离床。
Parents have sickness, medicine first taste; whole night with, no leave bed.
丧三年，常悲咽；居处辨，酒肉绝。
Funeral 3 years, always sad crying; husband & wife separate bed, wine & meat stop.
丧尽礼，祭尽诚；事死者，如事生。
Funeral all out rite, praying all out sincerity; administer deaths, like administer alive.
兄道友，弟道恭；兄弟睦，孝在中。
Elder brother Tao (way) befriends, younger brother Tao (way) respectful; brothers getting along, filial piety inside.
财物轻，怨何生？言语忍，忿自泯。
Money things look light, resentment how born? Languages endure, anger self solve.
或饮食，或坐走。长者先，幼者后。
Or eating foods, or sit & walk. Elder go first, junior go last.
长呼人，即代叫；人不在，己即到。
Elder call people, immediately call behalf; person not around, self immediately reach.
称尊长，勿呼名；对尊长，勿见能。
Call elder, not call name; with elder, not show capability.
路遇长，疾趋揖；长无言，退恭立。
Road meet elder, quickly bow; elder no speech, withdraw respectfully stand.
骑下马，乘下车；过犹待，百步余。
(See elder) come down horse, come down car; elder pass wait, 100 steps excess.
长者立，幼勿坐；长者坐，命乃坐。
Elder stand, junior not sit; elder sit, instruct then sit.
尊长前，声要低；低不闻，却非宜。
In front of elder, voice must low; low not hear, but also wrong.
进必趋，退必迟；问起对，视勿移。
Follow elder must fast, withdraw must slow; being ask must stand answer, sight not move.
事诸父，如事父；事诸兄，如事兄。
Administer all fathers, like administer father; administer all brothers, like administer brother.
朝起早，夜眠迟，老易至，惜此时。
Morning wake early, night sleep late, old age easily come, treasure this moment.
晨必盥，兼漱口；便溺回，辄净手。
Morning definitely wash face, also rinse mouth; shit & urine back, always wash hands.
冠必正，纽必结；袜与履，俱紧切。
Hat definitely upright, buttons definitely buttoned; sock & shoe always, shoe lace tied.
置冠服，有定位；勿乱顿，致污秽。
Put hat & clothings, have fixed position; do not anyhow put, make dirty.
衣贵洁，不贵华；上循分，下称家。
Clothings value tidy, not value expensive; up according situation, down according family status.
对饮食，勿拣择；食适可，勿过则。
For drinks & foods, not be choosy; eat right proportion, not over.
年方少，勿饮酒；饮酒醉，最为丑。
When young, not drink alcohol; drink alcohol drunk, is most ugly.
步从容，立端正；揖深圆，拜恭敬。
Step just nice, stand upright; bow roundly, kneel pray respectful.
勿践阈，勿跛倚；勿箕踞，勿摇髀。
Not step on door gap, not leg slant; not split legs, not shake leg.
缓揭帘，勿有声；宽转弯，勿触棱。
Slowly up curtain, not have sound; wide turn corner, not touch corner.
执虚器，如执盈；入虚室，如有人。
Take empty vessel, like take full; enter empty room, like have people.
事勿忙；忙多错；勿畏难，勿轻略。
Do tasks not busy, busy become many mistakes; not afraid difficulties, not careless.
斗闹场，绝勿近。邪僻事，绝勿问。
Fighting place, must not near. Evil strange things, must not ask.
将入门，问孰存；将上堂，声必扬。
About enter door, ask anyone there; about enter hall, sound must sound.
人问谁，对以名，吾与我，不分明。
People ask who, answer with name, if answer me, not understandable.
用人物，须明求。倘不问，即为偷。
Use people things, need ask permission. If not ask, is then stealing.
借人物，及时还；人借物，有勿悭。
Borrow people things, return on time; people borrow things, have not stingy.
凡出言，信为先；诈与妄，奚可焉？
When out words, trustworthiness are first; cheat & lie, how can?
说话多，不如少；惟其是，勿佞巧。
To say more, might as well less; say just nice, not flattery.
刻薄语，秽污词；市井气，切戒之。
Insulting languages, dirty terms; lowly city words, all must no.
见未真，勿轻言；知未的，勿轻传。
See not yet true, not careless out; know have not become, not lightly spread.
事非宜，勿轻诺；苟轻诺，进退错。
Things not good, not lightly agree; if agree, do or don't do both wrong.
凡道字，重且舒；勿急疾，勿模糊。
When say words, strong but comfortable; not too hurry, not unclear.
彼说长，此说短，不关己，莫闲管。
This say long, that say short; if not about self, do not care.
见人善，即思齐；纵去远，以渐跻。
See people good, then think same; even very far, use gradual step.
见人恶，即内省；有则改，无加警。
See people bad, then self reflect; have then change, no then add careful.
惟德学，惟才艺，不如人，当自励。
For virtues study, for capabilities, not as good, should self motivate.
若衣服，若饮食，不如人，勿生戚。
If clothings, if drinks & foods, not as good, not born sadness.
闻过怒，闻誉乐，损友来，益友却。
Hear mistake angry, hear praise happy, bad friends come, good friends leave.
闻誉恐，闻过欣，直谅士，渐相亲。
Hear praise afraid, hear mistake happy, upright friends, slowly near.
无心非，名为错；有心非，名为恶。
No heart mistake, is named mistake; have heart mistake, is named evil.
过能改，归于无；倘掩饰，增一辜。
Mistake able correct, become zero; if feign not, add another mistake.
凡是人，皆须爱，天同覆，地同载。
For people, all need love, under same Heaven, on same Earth.
行高者，名自高。人所重，非貌高。
Cultivation high person, reputation self high. People treasure, not appearance good.
才大者，望自大；人所服，非言大。
Capability high person, reputation self big; people submit, not speech big.
己有能，勿自私；人有能，勿轻訾。
Self has capability, not selfish; people have capability, not slander.
勿谄富，勿骄贫；勿厌故，勿喜新。
Not flatter rich, not proud to poor; not hate old, not like new.
人不闲，勿事搅；人不安，勿话扰。
People busy, not thing bother; people not emotion stable, not words bother.
人有短，切莫揭；人有私，切莫说。
People have shortcoming, not say out; people have secret, not say out.
道人善，即是善，人知之，愈思勉。
Say people good, is of good, people know, think improvement.
扬人恶，即是恶；疾之甚，祸且作。
Say people bad, is of bad; people know, disaster become make.
善相劝，德皆建；过不规，道两亏。
Good each other encourage, virtue then make; mistake not correct, both side lose.
凡取与，贵分晓；与宜多，取宜少。
When get or give, value in equal knowing; give more, take less.
将加人，先问己；己不欲，即速己。
Want to ask people, first ask self; self not want, immediately stop self.
恩欲报，怨欲忘；报怨短，报恩长。
Gratitude think repay, resentment think forget; repay resentment short, repay gratitude long.
待婢仆，身贵端；虽贵端，慈而宽。
Treat female servant, body treasure upright; although treasure upright, compassionate & forgiving.
势服人，心不然；理服人，方无言。
Power submit people, heart not submit; reasoning submit people, people no say.
同是人，类不齐，流俗众，仁者希。
Same as people, cultivation not same, normal people many, Ren (humanity) people few.
果仁者，人多畏。言不讳，色不媚。
Really Ren (humanity) person, people many afraid. Speech not giving, expression not flattery.
能亲仁，无限好；德日进，过日少。
Able close Ren (humanity) people, no limit good; virtue daily improve, mistake daily fewer.
不亲仁，无限害；小人进，百事坏。
Not close Ren (humanity) people, no limit bad; petty people closer, hundred things bad.
不力行，但学文，长浮华，成何人。
No effort action, but learn Scriptures, grow fakeness, become what person.
但力行，不学文，任己见，昧理真。
Only effort action, no learn Scriptures, use self knowledge, do not know true knowledge.
读书法，有三到，心眼口，信皆要。
Study method, have 3 must reach, heart eyes & mouth, all must have.
方读此，勿慕彼，此未终，彼勿起。
When reading this book, not think of others, this not finish, not start others.
宽为限，紧用功，工夫到，滞塞通。
Deadline broad, hurry hardworking, efforts reach, stop areas through.
心有疑，随札记，就人问，求确义。
Heart has doubts, according write comments, ask people, get correct meaning.
房屋清，墙壁净；几案洁，笔砚正。
Room house clean, walls clean, table clean, ink & papers correct.
墨磨偏，心不端；字不敬，心先病。
Ink grind side, heart not upright; words not respectful, heart first sick.
列典籍，有定处，读看毕，还原处。
Books & Scriptures, have fixed places, finish reading, put back original places.
虽有急，卷束齐，有缺损，就补之。
Even have hurry, books close tidy, have broken pages, add-on repair.
非圣书，屏勿视，蔽聪明，坏心志。
Not Sage books, stop don't see, stop wisdom, spoil heart ambitions.
勿自暴，勿自弃，圣与贤，可驯致。
Not self resign, not self give-up, Sage & Sub-Sage, can learn become.
