時,大師至寶林,韶州韋刺史與官僚入山請師,出於城中大梵寺講堂,為眾開緣說法。
Then, big Teacher at Place Bao Ling, Province Shao Official Wei Chi & other officials enter mountain to ask Teacher, to come out city Temple Da Fan lecture hall, for crowd give fate talk.
師升座次,刺史官僚三十餘人、儒宗學士三十餘人、僧尼道俗一千餘人,同時作禮,願聞法要。
Teacher rises to seat, Officials 30 plus people, Scholars 30 plus people, Monks & Nuns 1000 plus people, together bow, willing to hear Teachings.
大師告眾曰:「善知識!普提自性,本來清淨,但用此心,直了成佛。
Big Teacher tells crowd: "good knowledge persons! Buddha nature, originally clean & quiet, only to use this heart, straight become Buddha.
善知識!且聽惠能行由得法事意。」善知識!且聽惠能行由得法事意。」
Good knowledge persons! Wait hear Hui Neng how I get Teachings Essence."
惠能嚴父,本貫范陽,左降流于嶺南,作新州百姓。
Hui Neng's strict father, originally from Place Fan Yang, then abandoned to Place Ling Nan, become Province Xin citizens.
此身不幸,父又早亡,老母孤遺,移來南海,艱辛貧乏,於市賣柴。
This life unfortunate, father then early die, old mother alone, move to Place Nan Hai, suffering & poor, for market sell firewoods.
時,有一客買柴,使令送至客店;客收去,惠能得錢,欲出門外,見一客誦經。
Then, have one customer buys firewoods, ask send to customer shop, customer take, Hui Neng takes money, about to out door, see one customer recite Scripture.
惠能一聞經語,心即開悟,遂問:「客誦何經?」
Hui Neng once hear Scripture words, heart become enlightened, asks: "customer recite what Scripture?"
客曰:「《金剛經》。」
Customer: "Diamond Scripture."
復問:「從何所來,持此經典?」
Repeat asks: "from where, get cultivate this Scripture?"
客云:「我從蕲州黃梅縣東禪寺來。
Customer: "I from Province Qi Sub-Province Huang Mei West Zen Temple.
其寺是五祖忍大師在彼主化,門人一千有餘;我到彼中禮拜,聽受此經。
That Temple is 5th Zen Master Ren Big Teacher at there give Teachings, his Disciples have 1000 plus; I at there under study, hear receive this Scripture.
大師常勸僧俗:但持《金剛經》,即自見性,直了成佛。」
Big Teacher always encourage Monks & Cultivators, only cultivate with Diamond Scripture, immediately self see Buddha nature, straight become Buddha."
惠能聞說,宿昔有緣,乃蒙一客取銀十兩與惠能令充老母衣糧,教便往黃梅參禮五祖。
Hui Neng hear said, because past have fate, get one customer give 10 grams silver for Hui Neng provide mother clothings & food, get to go Place Huang Mei pay respect 5th Zen Master.
惠能安置母畢,即便辭違,不經三十餘日,便至黃梅,禮拜五祖。
Hui Neng settle mother finished, immediately leave home, not more than 30 days plus, reach Place Huang Mei, pay respect 5th Zen Master.
祖問曰:「汝何方人?欲求何物?」
5th Zen Master asks: "you from where? What thing you seek?"
惠能對曰:「弟子是嶺南新州百姓。遠來禮師,惟求作佛,不求餘物。」
Hui Neng answers: "Disciple is Place Ling Nan Province Xin citizen. Far come pay respect Teacher, only seek become Buddha, do not ask other thing."
祖言:「汝是嶺南人,又是獦獠,若為堪作佛?」
5th Zen Master: "you are southern Place Ling Nan people, also barbarian, what basis to be Buddha?"
惠能曰:「人雖有南北,佛性本無南北;獦獠身與和尚不同,佛性有何差別?」
Hui Neng: "people have southern & northern, Buddha nature no southern & no northern; barbarian body & you Monk different, Buddha nature where got different?"
惠能曰:「惠能啟和尚,弟子自心常生智慧,不離自性,即是福田。未審和尚教作何務?」
Hui Neng: "Hui Neng tells Teacher Monk, Disciple from heart always born wisdom, do not leave Buddha nature, is happiness farmland. Do not know Teacher Monk teaches me do what?"
祖云:「這獦獠根性大利!汝更勿言,著槽廠去!」
5th Zen Master: "this barbarian Buddha nature very good! You do not say, go rice kitchen!"
慧能退至後院,有一行者,差慧能破柴踏碓。經八月餘。
Hui Neng withdraw to back kitchen, has one Cultivator, instructs Hui Neng to break firewoods & step grinder. Time past 8 months plus.
祖一日忽見惠能曰:「吾思汝之見可用,恐有惡人害汝,遂不與汝言,汝知之否?」
5th Zen Master one day suddenly see Hui Heng says: "I think your seeing of heart is of use, afraid of bad people harm you, therefore do not talk to you, you understand not?"
惠能曰:「弟子亦知師意,不敢行至堂前,令人不覺。」
Hui Neng: "Disciple me knows Teacher's intention, do not dare walk to Hall front, make people do not aware."
祖一日喚諸門人總來,吾向汝說:「世人生死事大,汝等終日只求福田,不求出離生死苦海。自性若迷,福何可救?
5th Zen Master one day asks all disciples to come, I tell you: "world people life & death matter big, you etc whole day only know ask happiness, do not ask get out of reincarnation suffering sea. Self nature if confused, happiness how to save?
汝等各去自看智慧,取自本心般若之性,各作一偈來呈吾看,若悟大意,付汝衣法為第六代祖。火急速去!不得遲滯!思量即不中用!
You etc all go see wisdom, get self Buddha nature, each make one poem let me see, if understand big meaning, let you have Zen Master Clothing become 6th Zen Master. Quickly fire go! Do not stop thinking! Think then not correct!
見性之人,言下須見。若如此者,輪刀上陣,亦得見之。」
See Buddha nature person, words under definitely see. If such person, see knife go say, will definitely see."
眾得處分,退而遞相謂曰:「我等眾人,不須澄心用意作偈,將呈和尚有何所益?
The crowd get instructions, withdraw & speak among them: "we etc crowd, need not clear heart write poem, give Monk Teacher what use?
神秀上座現為教授師,必是他得,我輩謾作偈頌,枉用心力。」
Top disciple Shen Xiu currently the teaching teacher, definitely he gets, we rudely make poem, waste efforts."
諸人聞語,總皆息心,咸言:「我等以後依止秀師,何烦作偈?」
All people hear words, finally all calm heart, say: "we etc next time follow teacher Shen Xiu, what trouble make poem?"
神秀思惟:「諸人不呈偈者,為我與他為教授師,我須作偈呈和尚。
Shen Xiu thinking: "the people do not submit poem, is because I am their teaching teacher, I need to submit poem to Monk Teacher.
若不呈偈,和尚如何知我心中見解深淺?
If I do not submit poem, how Monk Teacher know my heart understanding deep of shallow?
我呈偈意,求法即善,覓祖即惡,卻同凡心奪其聖位奚別?
I submit poem intention, get Teaching is good, get Master position is bad, like normal heart get Position what difference?
若不呈偈,終不得法。大難!大難!」
If I do not submit poem, in the end cannot get Teaching. Big disaster! Big disaster!"
五祖堂前,有步廊三閒,擬請供奉盧珍畫「棱伽家經變相」及「五祖血脈圖」,流傳供養。
5th Zen Master Hall in front, have 3 hallways, put precious pictures Ling Qie Scripture Speaking & five Zen Masters passing line picture, put outside for respect.
神秀作偈成已,數度欲呈,行至堂前,心中恍惚,遍身汗流,擬呈不得;前後經四日,一十三度呈偈不得。
Shen Xiu does poem finished, many times want to submit, walk to hall front, heart confused, whole body sweating, want to submit cannot, past 4 days, 13 times unable to submit.
秀乃思惟:「不如向廊下書著!從他和尚看見,忽若道好,即出禮拜,云是秀作;若道不堪,枉向山中數年、受人禮拜,更修何道?」
Shen Xiu thinking: "why not write on the hallway! Monk Teacher will see, if say good, immediately pay respect, say is me write; if say not good, waste all these years in the mountain, get people respect, cultivate what Tao (way)?"
是夜三更,不使人知,自執燈,書偈於南廊璧閒,呈心所見。
Is middle of night, no one knows, self get lamp, write poem on south corridor wall, submit heart what see.
偈曰:「身是菩提樹,心如明鏡台,時時勤拂拭,勿使惹塵埃。」
Poem: "body is bodhi tree, heart like bright mirror, time time hardworking rub, not to take dusts."
秀書偈了,便卻歸房,人總不知。
Shen Xiu write poem finished, then return room, people yet to know.
秀思復惟:「五祖明日見偈歡喜,即我與法有緣;若言不堪,自是我迷,宿業障重,不合得法。聖意難測!」
Shen Xiu repeat thinking: "5th Zen Master tomorrow see poem & like, I immediately with Teaching have fate; if say no good, is me self misguided, past life sins heavy, not fit to have Teaching. Sage guess difficult!"
房中思想,坐臥不安,直至五更。
In room thinking, sit & sleep not comfortable, till 5 am.
祖已知神秀入門未得,不見自性。
5th Zen Master already know Shen Xiu enter School unable to get, unable see own nature.
天明,祖喚盧供奉來,向南廊璧閒繪畫圖相,忽見其偈,報言:「供奉卻不用畫,勞爾遠來。
Day morning, 5th Zen Master incense bowl respecting, go southern walls to respect the pictures, suddenly see the poem, reports: "respecting need not draw, make you far come.
經云:『凡所有相,皆是虛妄。』但留此偈,與人誦持。
Scripture: for all appearances, all are illusions. Leave this poem, for others to recite.
依此偈修,免墮惡道;依此偈修,有大利益!」
Follow this poem cultivate, can avoid going to bad realm; follow this poem cultivate, have big benefits!"
令門人:「炷香禮敬,盡誦此偈,即得見性。」
Make the disciples: "light incense respecting, read thorough this poem, then able to see nature."
門人誦偈,皆歎:「善哉!」
Disciples recite poem, all exclaim: ":good!"
祖三更喚秀入堂,問曰:「偈是你作否?」
5th Zen Master 3am asks Shen Xiu to enter room, asks: "poem is it you do?"
秀言:「實是秀作,不敢妄求祖位;望和尚慈悲,看弟子有少智慧否?」
Shen Xiu: "really is Shen Xiu do, do not dare ask for Master position; hope Monk Teacher compassionate, see disciple how many wisdom have?"
祖曰:「汝作此偈,未見本性,只到門外,未入門內。如此見解,覓無上菩提,了不可得。
5th Zen Master: "you do this poem, not able to see original nature, only reach door outside, unable to come inside door. Such understanding, seeking for No Higher Enlightenment, finished unable to get.
無上菩提,須得言下識自本心,見自本性,不生不滅。
No Higher Enlightenment, need to words under know original heart, see self original nature, no born & no destruction.
於一切時中,念念自見,萬法無滯,一真一切真,萬境自如如。
On all times, thought thought self see, all Teachings non-stop, one real all real, all appearances self like that.
如如之心,即是真實。若如是見,即是無上菩提之自性也。
Like that heart, is reality. If like that see, is No Higher Enlightenment of self nature.
汝且去一兩日思惟,更作一偈,將來吾看;汝偈若入得門,付汝衣法。」
You then go one two days thinking, change make another poem, let me see; if your poem enter door, give you Clothing Teaching."
神秀作禮而去。又經數日,作偈不成,心中恍惚,神思不安,猶如夢中,行坐不樂。
Shen Xiu make rite & leave. And another few days, do poem cannot accomplish, heart dizzy, concentration not comfortable, like in a dream, walk & sit not happy.
復兩日,有一童子於碓坊過,唱誦其偈,惠能一聞便知此偈未見本性。
After 2 days, have one child pass rice grinder room, singing that poem, Hui Neng once hear know this poem have not see nature.
雖未蒙教授,早識大意。遂問童子曰:「誦者何偈?」
Although never receive Teaching, long ago know big meaning. Quickly ask the child: "recite what poem?"
童子曰:「爾這獦獠不知。大師言:世人生死事大,欲得傳付衣法,令門人作偈來看,若悟大意,即付衣法為第六祖。
Child: "you this barbarian do not know. Big Teacher says: common people life & death matter big, desire to get Clothing Teaching, make disciples make poem to see, if understand big meaning, immediately give Clothing Teaching become 6th Zen Master.
神秀上座於南廊壁上書無相偈,大師令人皆誦。依此偈修,免墜惡道;依此偈修,有大利益。」
Shen Xiu upper disciple on southern corridor write no appearance poem, big Teacher make everyone recites. Follow this poem cultivate, avoid fall to bad realm; follow this poem cultivate, have big benefits."
惠能曰:「我亦要誦此,結來生緣。上人!我此踏碓八個餘月,未曾行到堂前,望上人引至偈前禮拜。」
Hui Neng: "I also want to recite this, gather future life fate. Good person! I here step on grinder 8 months extra, never go to Hall front, hope good person guide to poem front pay respect."
童子引至偈前禮拜。惠能曰:「惠能不識字,請上人為讀。」
The child guide to poem front to pay respect. Hui Neng: "Hui Neng do not know words, please good person read for me."
時有江州別駕,姓張名日用,便高聲讀。
Then have Province Jiang person attending, surname Zhang name Day Use, then big voice read out.
惠能聞已,遂言:「亦有一偈,望別駕為書。」
Hui Neng hears finished, immediately says: "I also have one poem, hope attending you can write for me."
別駕言:「汝亦作偈,其事希有!」
Attending person says: "you want to make poem, this thing hard to do!"
惠能向別駕言:「欲學無上菩提,不可輕於後學。下下人有上上智,上上人有沒意智。若輕人,即有無量無邊罪。」
Hui Neng to attending person says: "want to learn No Higher Enlightenment, cannot look down on behind people. Below below people have up up wisdom, up up people do not have thought wisdom. If look down on people, immediately have no measure no boundary sins."
別駕言:「汝但誦偈,吾為汝書。汝若得法,先須度吾,勿忘此言。」
Attending person says: "you then recite poem, I write for you. If you get Teaching, first must save teach me, do not forget this words."
惠能偈曰:「菩提本無樹,明鏡亦非台;本來無一物,何處惹塵埃?」
Hui Neng poem: "buddha nature is not a tree, clear mirror is not piece; originally nothing, where can get dust?"
書此偈已,徒眾總驚,無不嗟訝;各相謂言:「奇哉!不得以貌取人!何得多時,使他肉身菩薩?」
Finish writing the poem, disciple crowd all shock, all talking; each talking each other: "strange thing! Cannot use appearance judge people! Not know what time, make him body form Sub-Buddha?"
祖見眾人驚怪,恐人損害,遂將鞋擦了偈曰:「亦未見性。」眾以為然。
5th Zen Master see the crowd shock & puzzled, afraid people harm him, immediately use shoe to rub away the poem: "still not able see nature." The crowd follow think so.
次日祖潛至碓坊,見能腰石[春*]米,語曰:「求道之人,為法忘軀,當如是乎?」乃問曰:「米熟也未?」
Next day 5th Zen Master secretly enter rice grinder room, see Hui Neng tie rock to waist (to make him heavier) to grind rice, says: "find Tao (way) Person, for Teachings forget body, should be like that?" And asks: "rice (your Cultivation) ripe already?"
惠能曰:「米熟久矣!猶欠篩在。」
Hui Neng: "rice ripe long time ago! Lack flipping (your POINT Enlightenment) only."
祖以杖擊碓三下而去。
5th Zen Master use pole knock rice grinder three times & leave.
惠能即會祖意,三鼓入室;祖以袈裟遮圍不令人見,說《金剛經》,至『應無所住而生其心』,惠能言下大悟『一切萬法不離自性』。
Hui Neng immediately understand 5th Zen Master's meaning, 3am drum enter bedroom; 5th Zen Master use robe hide surrounded not let people see, say 'Diamond Scripture', until 'should not centre on & born heart', Hui Neng words under big understanding 'all Teachings do not leave self nature'.
遂啟祖言:「何期自性本自清淨!何期自性本不生滅!何期自性本自具足!何期自性本無動搖!何期自性能生萬法!」
Get inspiration from 5th Zen Master says: "since what time self nature originally quiet & clean! Since what time self nature no born & no destruction! Since what time self nature is self-sufficient! Since what time self nature originally no move shaking! Since what time self nature can born all Teachings!"
祖知悟本性,謂惠能曰:「不識本心,學法無益。若識自本心,見自本性,即名大丈夫、天人師、佛。」
5th Zen Master know understand original nature, tell Hui Neng: "do not know original heart, learn Teachings no use. If understand to original heart, see from original nature, then named big Person, Heaven People Teacher, Buddha."
三更受法,人盡不知,便傳頓教及衣鉢。
3am get Teachings, all do not know, then transfer teach immediate Enlightenment Teachings & Clothing Treasure.
云:「汝為第六代祖,善自護念,廣度有情,流布將來,無令斷絕!
Says: "you become 6th generation Zen Master, good self guard thoughts, broadly save have feelings, transfer Teachings to the future, do not stop break the line!
聽吾偈曰:有情來下種,因地果還生;無情亦無種,無性亦無生。」
Hear me say poem: have feelings come plant seeds, because ground fruits return born; no feeling then no seed, no nature then no born."
祖復曰:「昔達摩大師,初來此土,人未之信,故傳此衣以為信體,代代相承;法則以心傳心,皆令自悟自解。
5th Zen Master repeat: "in the past Big Teacher Da Mo, first come this land, people yet to believe, therefore transfer give this Clothing to become trust object, generations & generations pass down; Teachings however is heart transfer heart, all is self understand & self explain.
自古佛佛惟傳本體,師師密付本心。衣為爭端,止汝勿傳!
Since past Buddha & Buddha only transfer teaching the main Teachings, Teacher & Teacher secretly explain the main Heart. Clothing has become competition grab, stop you do not transfer give!
若傳此衣,命如懸絲。汝須速去!恐人害汝。」
If transfer give this Clothing, life is like hanging string. You need quickly leave! Afraid people harm you."
惠能啟曰:「向甚處去?」
Hui Neng asks: "which direction go to?"
祖云:「逢懷則止,遇會則藏。」
5th Zen Master: "reach Place Huai then stop, reach Place Hui then hide."
惠能三更領得衣缽,云:「能本是南中人,素不知此山路,如何出得江口?」
Hui Neng 3am gets the Clothing Treasure, says: "I originally is southern people, plainly do not know this mountain roads, how to get to river mouth?"
五祖言:「汝不須憂,吾自送汝。」
5th Zen Master: "you need not worry, I will send you."
祖相送直至九江驛,祖令上船,五祖把艣自搖。
5th Zen Master together send off to River Mouth Nine River Mouth, 5th Zen Master orders board ship, 5th Zen Master take boat self row.
惠能言:「請和尚坐,弟子合搖艣。」
Hui Neng: "please Monk Teacher sits, Disciple me together rows boat."
祖云:「合是吾渡汝。」
5th Zen Master: "together is I carry you across."
惠能曰:「迷時師渡,悟了自渡;渡名雖一,用處不同。惠能生在邊方,語音不正,蒙師傳法,今已得悟,只合自性自度。」
Hui Neng: "misguided time Teacher carry me over, enlightened time self carry over; carry over name although name same, use meaning different. I born in border places, words sounds not correct, grateful Teacher transfer Teachings, today already get understanding, only fit to self nature self carry over."
祖云:「如是!如是!以後佛法,由汝大行。(能去三年,祖方逝世。)
5th Zen Master: "like you say! Like you say! From now on Buddha Teachings, let you big implement. (Hui Neng gone 3 years later, 5th Zen Master then past away.
汝今好去,努力向南,不宜速說,佛法難起。」
You today good go, make efforts go south, do not fast talk, Buddha Teachings difficult rise."
惠能辭違祖已,發足南行,兩月中間,至大庾嶺。
Hui Neng goodbyes 5th Zen Master finished, start foot to south, between 2 months, reach Place Da Yu Ling.
五祖歸,數日不上堂,眾疑,詣問曰:「和尚少病少煩否?」
5th Zen Master returns, few days do not out Hall, crowd gets suspicious, inquires: "Monk Teacher few sickness & few troubles is it?"
曰:「病即無,衣法已南矣。」
5th Zen Master: "sickness don't have, Clothing Teaching already to southern only."
問:「誰人傳授?」
Asks: "who person gets?"
曰:「能者得之。」眾乃知焉。
5th Zen Master: "capable (Neng) person gets with." The crowd then knows.
遂後數百人來,欲奪衣缽。
Immediately then few hundreds people come, want to capture Clothing Treasure.
一僧俗姓陳名惠明,先是四品將軍,性行麤糙;極意參尋,為眾人先趁及惠能。
One monk common surname Chen name Hui Ming, before is 4 grade general, character reckless; determined to find, become crowd first get to Master Hui Neng.
惠能擲下衣缽於石上,曰:「此衣表信,可力爭耶?」
Master Hui Neng throws down Clothing Treasure on rock, says: "this Clothing represents trust, can use strength takes?"
惠明至,提掇不動,乃喚云:「行者!行者!我為法來,不為衣來。」
Hui Ming reaches, take Clothing cannot move, then shouts: "Cultivator! Cultivator! I here for Teachings, not for Clothing."
惠能遂出,盤坐石上。
Master Hui Neng immediately comes out, sits strictly on rock.
惠明作禮云:「望行者為我說法。」
Hui Ming make respect says: "hope Cultivator for me says Teachings."
惠能云:「汝既為法而來,可屏息諸緣,勿生一念,吾為汝說。」
Master Hui Neng: "you for Teachings come, can stop all things, do not born one thought, I for you say."
明良久,惠能云:「不思善,不思惡,正與麼時,那個是明上座本來面目?」
Hui Ming quiet down long, Master Hui Neng: "do not think good, do not think evil, at this moment, that is your mind seat original appearance?"
惠明言下大悟,復問云:「上來密語密意外,還更有密意否?」
Hui Meng under words big understanding, repeat asks: "outside high up secret words secret meanings, is there more secret meanings not?"
惠能云:「與汝說者,即非密也。汝若返照,密在汝邊。」
Master Hui Neng: "with you talk things, is not secret. If you reflect, secret is inside you."
明曰:「惠明雖在黃梅,實未省自己面目。今蒙指示,如人飲水,冷暖自知。今行者即惠明師也。」
Hui Ming: "me Hui Ming although at 5th Zen Master Huang Mei's place, really didn't reflect my nature. Today get instruction, like drinking water, cold hot self know. Today you Cultivator is Hui Ming's Teacher."
惠能曰:「汝若如是,吾與汝同師黃梅,善自護持。」
Master Hui Neng: "you if it is, I & you same Teacher of 5th Zen Master Huang Mei, should good protect with."
明又問:「惠明今後向甚處去?」
Hui Ming again ask: "me Hui Ming from today onwards go where?"
惠能曰:「逢袁則止,遇蒙則居。」
Master Hui Neng: "reach Place Yuan stop, reach Place Meng settle live."
明禮辭。
Hui Ming pays respect & leaves.
明回至嶺下,謂趁眾曰:「向陟崔嵬,竟無蹤跡,當別道尋之。」
Hui Ming return to Place Zhi Ling, tells chasing crowd: "have gone Place Zhi Cui Wei, do not have trace, should other route search."
趁眾咸以為然。
Chasing crowd all think is like that.
惠明後改道明,避師上字。
Hui Ming later change name to Dao Ming, to avoid Teacher first word name.
惠能後至曹溪,又被惡人尋遂,乃於四會,避難獵人隊中,凡經一十五載,時與獵人随宜說法。
Hui Neng later reaches Place Cao Xi, again get bad people search for, reach Place Si Hui, avoid disasters inside hunters group, for 15 years, time with hunters always say Teachings.
獵人常令守網,每見生命盡放之。
Hunters always order him to guard nets, everytime see life let them escape.
每至飯時,以菜寄煮肉鍋;或問?
Everytime meal times, use vegetables cook beside meat utensils, when ask?
則對曰:「但喫肉邊菜。」
Then answers: "only eat meat beside vegetables."
一日思惟:「時當弘法,不可終遯。」
One day thinking: "time to spread Teachings, cannot forever hiding."
遂出至廣州法性寺;值印宗法師講《涅盤經》。
Come out go Province Guang Teaching Nature Temple; at that time Teacher Yin Zong is lecturing Go Voidness Scripture.
時有風吹旛動,一僧曰:「風動」,一僧曰:「旛動」,議論不已。
Then have wind blow banner moves, one monk: "wind moves", one monk: "banner moves", arguing non-stop.
惠能進曰:「不是風動,不是旛動,仁者心動。」一眾駭然。
Master Hui Neng go up & says: "not wind moves, not banner moves, is you your hearts move." One crowd shocks hearing.
印宗延至上席,徵詰奧義,見惠能言簡理當,不由文字。
Teacher Yin Zong invites Master Hui Neng to high seat, ask things about deep meaning, see Master Hui Neng words simple & to the point, not through words.
宗云:「行者定非常人!久聞黃梅衣法南來,莫是行者否?」
Teacher Yin Zong: "Cultivator is surely no common person! Long heard 5th Zen Master Huang Mei's Clothing Teaching comes south, is it not you Cultivator not?"
惠能曰:「不敢!」
Master Hui Neng: "do not dare!"
宗於是作禮,告請「傳來衣缽,出示大眾。」
Teacher Yin Zhong therefore make a bow, say invite "transfer come Clothing Treasure, show the crowd."
宗復問曰:「黃梅付囑,如何指授?」
Teacher Yin Zong repeat asks: "5th Zen Master Huang Mei's Instructions, how to receive?"
惠能曰:「指授即無,惟論見性,不論禪定解脫。」
Master Hui Neng: "to receive is none, only talk about see nature, do not talk Zen fixed heart free."
宗曰:「何不論禪定解脫?」
Teacher Yin Zong: "why not talk Zen fixed heart free."
惠能曰:「為是二法,不是佛法,佛法是不二之法。」
Master Hui Neng: "doing is two teaching, no Buddha Teachings, Buddha Teachings is not two teaching."
宗又問:「如何是佛法不二之法?」
Teacher Yin Zong again asks: "how to Buddha Teachings not second teaching?"
惠能曰:「法師講《涅盤經》,明佛性是佛法不二之法。
Master Hui Neng: "you Teacher speaks Go Voidness Scripture, understands Buddha Nature is no two teaching.
如高貴德王菩薩白佛言:『犯四重罪、作五逆罪、及一闡提等,當斷善根佛性否?』
Like Sub-Buddha High Status Virtue King asks Buddha: "commit 4 heavy crimes, do 5 heavy-against crimes, & others heavy crimes etc, will cut off good seeds Buddha Nature not?
佛言:『善根有二:一者常,二者無常;佛性非常非無常,是故不斷,名為不二;一者善,二者不善,佛性非善非不善,是名不二。
Buddha says: "good seeds have 2 kinds: first type always, second type not always; Buddha Nature no always & no not always, therefore no cut-off; first type good, second type not good, Buddha Nature no good no not good, is named no two.
蘊之與界,凡夫見二,智者了達其性無二,無二之性即是佛性。』」
Trapped within realms, common people see two, wise people reach Nature no two, no two Nature is Buddha Nature."
印宗聞說,歡喜合掌,言:「某甲講經,猶如瓦礫;仁者論議,猶如真金。」
Teacher Yin Zong hears said, happy make hands, says: "I say Scripture, like rock tile; you say meaning, like real gold."
於是為惠能薙髮,願事為師。
Therefore for Master Hui Neng bald hairs, willing administer as Teacher.
惠能遂於菩提樹下開東山法門。
Master Hui Neng then under Bo Di Tree open East Mountain Teaching Sect.
惠能於東山得法,辛苦受盡,命似懸絲。
Master Hui Neng in Place East Mountain get Teachings, sufferings all get, life like hanging silk.
今日得與使君官僚僧尼道俗同此一會,莫非累劫之緣!
Today get with you diplomats officials monks & nuns both Cultivators & common people together this meeting, isn't it not past disasters gathered fate!
亦是過去生中供養諸佛,同種善根,方始得聞如上頓教,得法之因。
It is past lives have rear give all Buddhas, together grow good roots, then able to hear this Instant Teachings, get Teachings reasons.
教是先聖所傳,不是惠能自智。
Teachings are before Sages who spread transfer, not me Master Hui Neng self knowledge.
願聞先聖教者,各令淨心;聞了,各自除疑;如先代聖人無別。」
Wish hear before Sage's Teachings people, self make clear hearts; heard, self remove doubts; like before Sage people no difference."
一眾聞法,歡喜作禮而退。
One crowd hears Teachings, happily make bow & withdraw.
次日,韋使君請益,師陞座告大眾曰:「總淨心念『摩訶般若波羅蜜多』!」
Next day, Diplomat Wei gentlemanly asks improvement, Master Hui Neng rises to seat tells the crowd: "should clear heart & recite Big Wisdom To Reach The Shore!"
復云:「善智識!菩提般若之智,世人本自有之,只緣心迷不能自悟。
Repeat says: "good knowledge people! Buddha Nature Wisdom of wise, common people originally have, just fate heart cannot self know.
當知愚人智人,佛性本無差別;只緣迷悟不同,所以有愚有智。
Should know stupid people & wise people, Buddha Nature originally no difference, just fate is misled or know difference, therefore have stupid & wise.
吾今為說『摩訶般若波羅蜜多』法,使汝等各得智慧。
I today for you say Big Wisdom To Reach The Shore Teaching, make you etc all get wisdom.
志心諦聽!吾為汝說。
Determined heart listen! I for you say.
善智識!世人終日口念般若,不識自性般若,猶如說食不飽。
Good knowledge people! Common people whole day recite wisdom, do not know self nature wisdom, like say eaten not full.
口但說空,萬劫不得見性,終無有益。」
Mouth but say voidness, 10000 disasters time cannot see Nature, finally no use."
善智識!摩訶般若波羅蜜是梵語,此言大智慧到彼岸。
Good knowledge people! Big Wisdom To Reach The Shore is buddhist language, this phrase means big wisdom reach the shore.
此須心行,不在口念。
This requires heart actions, not in mouth recite.
口念心不行,如幻如化,如露如電;口念心行,則心口相應,本性是佛,離性無別佛。
Mouth recite & heart no action, like illusion like transition, like dew like electricity; mouth recite & heart action, then heart & mouth together relate, original nature is Buddha, away from nature no other Buddha.
何名摩訶?摩訶是大。
What is Big? Big is big meaning.
心量廣大,猶如虛空,無有邊畔,亦無方圓大小,亦非青黃赤白,亦無上下長短,亦無嗔無喜、無是無非、無善無惡、無有頭尾。
Heart capacity broad big, like voidness, no boundary border, & no shapes big or small, & no green yellow grey white, & no up down long short, & no angry no happy, no right no wrong, no good no evil, no have head or tail.
諸佛剎土,盡同虛空。
All Buddha Blessed Lands, together same as voidness.
世人妙性本空,無有一法可得;自性真空,亦復如是。
Common people wonder nature original empty, no have one teaching can get, self nature real empty, it is like that.
善智識!莫聞我說空,便即著空!
Good knowledge people! Do not hear I say empty, then immediately fixed on empty!
第一莫著空!若空心靜坐,即著無記空。
Firstly do not fixed on empty! If empty heart quietly sit, immediately fixed on no remembered empty.
善智識!世界虛空,能含萬物色像:日月星宿,山河大地,泉源溪澗,草木叢林,惡人善人,惡法善法,天堂地獄,一切大海,須彌諸山,總在空中。
Good knowledge people! The world voidness, able to contain everything all appearance, sun moon & stars, mountains rivers & big lands, spring sources & rivers, grass trees & forests, evil people & good people, evil teachings & good Teachings, Heaven & Hell, all seas, Xu Mi all mountains, all in empty inside.
世人性空,亦復如是。
Common people nature empty, is also like that.
善智識!自性能含萬法是大,萬法在諸人性中。
Good knowledge people! Self nature able to contain all Teachings is big, all Teachings in all people nature inside.
若見一切人「惡之與善」,盡皆不取不捨,亦不染著,心如虛空,名之為大;故曰:摩訶。
If see all people evil & good, all no get no throw, & no contamination, heart like voidness, is named big; therefore called: Big.
善智識!迷人口說,智者心行。
Good knowledge people! Lost-way people mouth say, wise people heart actions.
又有迷人,空心靜坐,百無所思,自稱為大;此一輩人,不可與語,為邪見故。
& have lost-way people, empty heart quietly sit, all time not think, self claim big, cannot talk with, is wrong thoughts because.
善智識!心量廣大,遍周法界。
Good knowledge people! Heart capacity broad big, across Teaching Realms.
用即了了分明,應用便知一切。
Use immediately become become differentiate, apply use then know everything.
一切即一,一即一切,去來自由,心體無滯,即是般若。
Everything is one, one is everything, go & come easily, heart objects no stop, is then wisdom.
善智識!一切般若智,皆從自性而生,不從外入,莫錯用意!--名為真性自用。
Good knowledge people! All wise wisdom, all from self nature born , not from outside enter, do not wrong use meaning! -- is named real nature self use.
一真一切真。心量大事,不行小道。
One real all real. Heart capacity big things, do not do small Tao (things).
口莫終日說空,心中不修此行!
Mouth do not whole day say empty, heart inside do not cultivate this action!
恰似凡人自稱國王,終不可得。非吾弟子!
Just like common people self claimed emperor, finally cannot get. Not my disciple!
善智識!何名般若?
Good knowledge people! What is named wisdom?
般若者,唐言智慧也。
Wisdom, china term is wisdom.
一切處所,一切時中,念念不愚,常行智慧,即是般若行。
All at places, all times, thought thought not stupid, always action wisdom, is then wisdom actions.
一念愚即般若绝,一念智即般若生。
One thought stupid is wisdom cut, one thought wise is wisdom born.
世人愚迷,不見般若。
Common people stupid lost, do not see wisdom.
口說般若,心中常愚。
Mouth say wisdom, heart inside always stupid.
常自言我修般若;念念說空,不識真空。
Always self say me cultivate wisdom, thought thought say empty, do not know real empty.
般若無形相,智慧心即是。
Wisdom no shape appearance, wisdom heart is like that.
若作如是解,即名般若智。
If let like that explain, is named wisdom wise.
何名波羅蜜?
What name is To Reach The Shore?
此是西國語,唐言到彼岸,解義離生滅。
This is west country language, china language is to reach the shore, explained meaning is away from born & death.
著境生滅起,如水有波浪,即名為此岸;離境無生滅,如水常通流,即名為彼岸;故號波羅蜜。
Fixed on environment born & death arises, like water have waves, is named this shore; away environment no born & death, like water always channel move, is named other the shore, therefore named To Reach The Shore.
善智識!迷人口念,當念之時,有妄有非。
Good knowledge people! Lost-way people mouth recite, when recite time, have illusions have wrongs.
念念若行,是名真性。
Thought thought if action, is named real nature.
語此法者,是般若法;修此行者,是般若行。
Say this Teaching, is wisdom Teaching; cultivate this action people, are wisdom actions.
不修,即凡;一念修行,自身等佛。
Do not cultivate, then common people; one thought cultivate action, self body are Buddhas.
善智識!凡夫即佛,煩惱即菩提。
Good knowledge people! Common people are Buddhas, troubles are Buddha Natures.
前念迷即凡夫,後念悟即佛;前念著境即煩惱,後念離境即菩提。
Front thought lost-way are common people, after thought enlightened are Buddhas; front thought fixed on environment are troubles, after thought away from environment are Buddha Natures.
善智識!摩訶般若波羅蜜,最尊最上最第一;無住無往亦無來,三世諸佛從中出。
Good knowledge people! Big Wisdom To Reach The Shore, is most precious is most highest is most number one; no fixed no go & no come, 3 realms Buddhas from here out.
當用大智慧,打破五蘊煩惱塵勞。
Should use big wisdom, break 5 hidden troubles dust tiredness.
如此修行,定成佛道,變三毒為戒定慧。
Like that cultivate action, confirmed become Buddha Tao (way), turn 3 poisons into Restraints & Zen-fixed &Wisdom.
善智識!我此法門,從一般若生八萬四千智慧。
Good knowledge people! My this Teaching Method, from one wisdom born 84,000 wisdoms.
何以故?為世人有八萬四千塵勞。
Why? Because common people have 84,000 dust labours.
若無塵勞,智慧常現,不離自性。
If no dust labours, wisdom always appears, do not leave self nature.
悟此法者,即是無念。
Understand this Teaching person, is no thought.
無憶無著,不起誑妄,用自真如性,以智慧觀照,於一切法不取不捨,即是見性成佛道。
No memory no fixed, do not arise illusions, use self real buddha nature, using wisdom to reflect see, for all teachings do not get do not abandon, is then see nature become Buddha Tao (way).
善智識!若欲入甚深法界及般若三昧者,須修般若行,持誦《金剛般若經》,即得見性。
Good knowledge people! If want to enter very deep Teaching & Wisdom 3 Grounds people, need to cultivate wisdom actions, cultivate recite with Diamond Wisdom Scripture, then will see nature.
當知此經功德,無量無邊;經中分明讚歎,莫能具說。
Should know this Scripture virtues, no capacity no boundaries, Scripture inside differentiate praise, all cannot say.
此法門是最上乘,為大智人說,為上根人說。
This Teaching Method is most highest class, for big wise people say, for upper root (foundation) people say.
小根小智人聞,心生不信。
Small root (foundation) & small wise people hear, heart born not believe.
何以故?譬如天龍下雨於閻浮提,城邑聚落。
Why? Like heaven dragon rain water on our world, inside the city & outside the city.
悉皆漂流,如漂草葉。
All flowing water, like flowing grass & leaves.
若雨大海,不增不減。
If rain on big sea, do not add & do not minus.
若大乘人,若最上乘人,聞說《金剛經》心開悟解,故知本性自有般若之智;自用智慧常觀照故,不假文字。
If big class people, if highest class people, hear say Diamond Scripture heart open understand explained, because know self nature have wisdom of wise, self use wisdom always reflect see though, do not need words.
譬如雨水,不從無有,元是龍能興致,令一切眾生、一切草木、有情無情、悉皆蒙潤。
Like rain water, before don't have, source from dragon able to arise, make all beings, all grass & woods, have emotions & do not have emotions, all get rinsed.
百川眾流,卻入大海,合為一體;眾生本性般若之智,亦復如是。
Hundreds river flows, but enter big sea, together become one body; all beings original nature wisdom of wise, is also like that.
善智識!小根之人聞此頓教,猶如草木,根性小者,若被大雨,悉皆自倒,不能增長。
Good knowledge people! Small root (foundation) of people hear this instanteous Teaching, like grass & wood, root (foundation) nature small people, if being poured by big rain, all self fall, cannot grow big.
小根之人,亦復如是。
Small root (foundation) of people, also like that.
元有般若之智,與大智人更無差別,因何聞法不自開悟?
Originally have Wisdom of wise, with big Wisdom People no difference, reason why hear Teaching cannot self enlightened?
緣邪見障重,煩惱根深,猶如大雲蓋於日,不得風吹,日光不現。
Fate have evil thoughts obstacles heavy, troubles root deep, like big cloud cover the sun, cannot get wind blow, sunlight cannot appear.
般若之智亦無大小,為一切眾生自心迷悟不同。
Wisdom of wise actually no big small, for all beings self heart lost-way or enlightened different.
迷心外見,修行覓佛,未悟自性,即是小根。
Lost heart outside look, cultivate action seeking Buddha, do not realize self nature, is then small root (foundation).
若開悟頓教,不執外修,但於自心常起正見,煩惱塵勞常不能染,即是見性。
If enlightened by instanteous Teaching, do not fixed on outside cultivation, but for self heart always arise correct thoughts, troubles dust labours cannot corrupt, is then see nature.
善智識!內外不住,去來自由,能除執心,通達無礙。
Good knowledge people! Inside & outside not still, go & come freely, able get rid fixed heart, go through without stop.
能修此行,與般若經本無差別。
Able to cultivate this action, with Wisdom Scripture originally no difference.
善智識!一切修多羅及諸文字,大小二乘,十二部經,皆因人置。
Good knowledge people! All Scripture Meanings & all words, big & small class cultivation, 12 types of Scriptures, all because of different types of people set for.
因智慧性,方能建立。
Because wisdom nature, then able to establish.
若無世人,一切萬法本自不有。
If without world people, all Teachings original self do not have.
故知:萬法本自人興;一切經書,因人說有。
Therefore know: all Teachings original self people arise, all Scriptures & books, because people say have.
緣其人中有愚有智,愚為小人,智為大人。
Fate in people inside have stupid & have wise, stupid is the small people, wise is the big people.
愚者問於智人,智者與愚人說法。
Stupid people ask on wise people, wise people for stupid people say Teachings.
愚人忽然悟解心開,即與智人無別。
Stupid people suddenly enlightened explain heart open, then with wise people no difference.
善智識!不悟,即佛是眾生;一念悟時,眾生是佛。
Good knowledge people! Not enlightened, is Buddha become common being; one thought enlightened time, common being is Buddha.
故知萬法盡在自心。
Therefore know all Teachings all inside self heart (Teachings are heart things).
何不從自心中頓見真如本性?
Why not from self heart inside instanteous see real buddha original nature?
《菩薩戒經》云:「我本元自性清淨。」
Sub-Buddha Must-Not Scripture: "I originally self nature clean."
若識自心見性,皆成佛道。
If know self heart see nature, all become Buddha Tao (way).
《淨名經》云:「即時豁然,還得本心。」
Clean Name Scripture: "then time know all, is still original heart."
善智識!我於忍和尚處.一聞言下便悟,頓見真如本性。
Good knowledge people. I with 5th Zen Master Ren Monk Teacher there, once hear words inside become enlightened, instanteous see real buddha original nature.
是以將此教法流行,令學道者頓悟普提,各自觀心,自見本性。
Is therefore makes this Teaching popular, make learning Tao (way) people instanteous enlightened to Buddha nature, each self see heart, each see original nature.
若自不悟,須覓大善知識─解最上乘法者,直示正路。
If self not enlightened, need seek big good knowledge people - explain most highest class Teachings persons, straight point correct road.
是善智識有大因緣,所謂「化導令得見性」,一切善法因善智識能發起故。
Is good knowledge people have big cause fate, the "explain guide make you get see nature", all good Teachings because good knowledge people able ignite arise because.
三世諸佛,十二部經,在人性中本自具有;不能自悟,須求善智識指示方見。
3 lifetime all Buddhas, 12 types of Scriptures, inside people nature originally self have; cannot self enlightened, need seek good knowledge people pointing guide then see.
若自悟者,不假外求;若一向執謂須他善智識望得解脫者,無有是處。
If self enlightened person, do not reply outside seek; if always fixed on need other good knowledge people then get heart free, no use things.
何以故?自心內有智識自悟。
Why? Self heart inside have knowledge to self enlightened.
若起邪迷,妄念顛倒,外善智識雖有教授,救不可得。
If born wrong illusion, wrong thoughts upside down, outside good knowledge people although give teachings, unable to save.
若起正真般若觀照,一剎那間,妄念俱滅;若識自性,一悟即至佛地。
If born correct real wisdom reflections, one suddenly time, wrong thoughts extinguished; if know self nature, one enlightenment then reach Buddha Lands.
善智識!智慧觀照,內外明徹,識自本心。
Good knowledge people! Wisdom reflect see, inside & outside clear through, know self original heart.
若識本心,即本解脫。
If know original heart, is original heart free.
若得解脫即是般若三昧,般若三昧即是無念。
If get heart free is wisdom 3 things, wisdom 3 things is no thought.
何名無念?
What is named no thought?
知見一切法,心不染著,是為無念。
Know see all Teachings, heart no contamination, is known as no thought.
用即徧一切處,亦不著一切處;但淨本心,使六識出六門,於六塵中無染無雜,來去自由,通用無滯,即是般若三昧,自在解脫,名無念行。
Use is stress on all places, do not fixed all places; but clean original heart, make 6 senses out 6 doors, in 6 dusts inside no contamination & no impurities, come go freely, get use no stop, is wisdom 3 things, self in heart free, is named no thought actions.
若百物不思,當令念绝;即是法縛,即名邊見。
If hundred things do not think, at order thought stop; is teaching tied, is named side see.
善智識!悟無念法者,萬法盡通;悟無念法者,見諸佛境界;悟無念法者,至佛地位。
Good knowledge people! Understand no thought Teaching people, all Teachings all know; know no thought Teaching people, see all Buddhas surrounding; know no thought Teaching people, reach Buddha positions.
善智識!後代得吾法者,將此頓教法門,於同見同行,發願受持,如事佛故,終身而不退者,定入聖位。
Good knowledge people! Later generation get my Teaching people, bring this instanteous Teaching Method, same see & same actions, make vow to cultivate with, like administering Buddha, whole life do not withdraw, definitely enter Sagehood.
然須傳授從上以來默傳分付,不得匿其正法。
But need transfer get from above to quietly get, cannot guess the correct Teaching.
若不同見同行,在別法中,不得傳付,損彼前人,究竟無益。
If no same see & same action, inside other teaching, unable to get transfer get, criticize other Elder, finally no use.
恐愚人不解,謗此法門,百劫千生,斷佛種性。
Afraid stupid people do not understand, condemn this Teaching Method, hundred disasters & thousands birth, cut off Buddha seeds nature.
善智識!吾有一「無相頌」各須誦取,在家出家,但依此修。
Good knowledge people! I have one 'No Appearance Poem' each need to recite get, inside home or monk in Temple, all according this cultivate.
若不自修,惟記吾言,亦無有益。
If do not self cultivate, only memorize my words, then is no use.
聽吾頌曰:
Hear I poem:
說通及心通,如日處處空;唯傳見性法,出世破邪宗。
Say know & heart know, like day in empty place; only transfer see nature Teaching, out world break evil religion.
法即無頓漸,迷悟有遲疾;只此見性門,愚人不可悉。
Teaching is no instanteous or gradual, lost-way & enlightened have late sickness; only this see nature Method, stupid people unable to know.
說即雖萬般,合理還歸一。煩惱暗宅中,常須生慧日。
Say is although million ways, same truth still return one. Heart troubles inside dark room, always need born wisdom day.
邪來煩惱至,正來煩惱除;邪正俱不用,清淨至無餘。
Evil come heart trouble reach, correct come heart trouble get rid; evil & correct both do not use, clearness reach no excess.
菩提本自性,起心即是妄;淨心在妄中,但正無三障。
Buddha Nature originally self nature, born heart is then wrong illusion; clear heart inside wrong illusion, but correct no 3 obstacles.
世人若修道,一切盡不妨。常自見己過,與道即相當。
If common people cultivate Tao (way), all is ok. Always self see self mistakes, with Tao (way) the same.
色類自有道,各不相妨惱。離道別覓道,終身不見道。
Have forms being all have Tao (way), each do not interfere other. Away Tao (way) do not seek Tao (way), whole life unable to see Tao (way).
波波度一生,到頭還自懊。欲得見真道,行正即是道。
Time time spends one life, in the end still self regret. Wish to see real Tao (way), do correct is then Tao (way).
自若無道心,闇行不見道。
If self no Tao (way) heart, darkly walk cannot see Tao (way).
若真修道人,不見世間過;若見他人非,自非卻是左。
If real cultivate Tao (way) person, do not see world faults; if see other mistake, own mistake is nearby.
他非我不非,我非自有過;但自卻非心,打除煩惱破。
Other mistake I do not mistake, I mistake then self has fault; hopefully self no mistake heart, break get-rid heart troubles broken.
憎愛不關心,長伸兩腿臥。
Hate & love do not care, long stretch 3 legs & sleep.
欲擬化他人,自須有方便。勿令彼有疑,即是自性現。
Wish plan to better other people, self need have spare time. Do not make other have doubts, is then self nature appears.
佛法在世間,不離世間覚;離世覓菩提,恰如求兔角。
Buddha Teachings are inside world, do not leave world to know; leave world looking Buddha Nature, is like looking for rabbit honks.
正見名出世,邪見名世間;邪正盡打卻,菩提性宛然。
Correct thought is named out world, wrong thought is named this world; wrong & correct is just doing, Buddha Nature realized naturally.
此頌是頓教,亦名大法船。迷聞經累劫,悟則剎那間。
This poem is about instanteous teaching, also named big Teaching Boat. Lost-way inside world for many disasters, enlightened is only just a while.
師復曰:「今於大梵寺說此頓教,普願法界眾生言下見法成佛。」
Teacher 6th Zen Master repeat says: "today in Temple Big Teaching says this instanteous teaching, publicly wish teaching realm common beings able under words see Teachings become Buddha."
時韋使君與官僚道俗聞師所說,無不省悟。
Then Diplomat Wei & Officials in Temple People & in house Cultivators hear Teacher what say, all reflect understand.
一時作禮,皆歎:「善哉!何期嶺南有佛出世!」
One time do bow, all sign: "goodness! When time Place Ling Nan has Buddha born!"
一日,韋刺史為師設大會齋。
One day, Diplomat Wei for Teacher setup big vegetarian meeting.
齋訖,刺史請師陞座,同官僚士庶肅容再拜,問曰:「弟子聞和尚說法,實不可思議。
Vegetarian meals finished, Diplomat Wei invites Teacher rises to seat, with Officials Gentlemen & common People strict face again bow; asks: "disciple me hear Teacher Monk says Teachings, really unbelievable.
今有少疑,願大慈悲,特為解說。」
Today has few doubts, wish you big compassion, specially for me explain."
師曰:「有疑即問,吾當為說。」
Teacher: "have doubts then ask, I will for you explain."
韋公曰:「和尚所說,可不是達摩大師宗旨乎?」
Diplomat Wei: "Teacher Monk what say, is it Big Teacher Da Mo's main Teachings?"
師曰:「是。」
Teacher: "yes."
公曰:「弟子聞達摩初化梁武帝,帝問云:『朕一生造寺度僧,布施設齋,有何功德?』
Diplomat Wei: "disciple me hears Big Teacher Da Mo first teaches Emperor Liang Wu, Emperor asks: I whole life builds temple converts monks, give donations setup vegetarian meals, have merits?
達摩言:『實無功德。』
Big Teacher Da Mo: really no merit.
弟子未達此理,願和尚為說。」
Disciple me have not understand this concept, wish Teacher Monk for me explain."
師曰:「實無功德。勿疑先聖之言!
Teacher: "really no merit. Do not doubt previous Sage's words!
武帝心邪,不知正法;造寺度僧,布施設齋,名為求福,不可將福便為功德。
Emperor Liang Wu heart wrong, do not know correct Teaching, builds temple converts monks, give donations setup vegetarian meals, is named for seeking future happiness, cannot take future happiness as merits.
功德在法身中,不在修福。」
Merits is inside Teachings Body, not for cultivate future happiness."
師又曰:「見性是功,平等是德;念念無滯,常見本性,真實妙用,名為功德。
Teacher again says: "see nature is before merits, being fair is later merits; thought thought no stop, always see original nature, really wonder uses, is named merits.
內心謙下是功,外行於禮是德;自性建立萬法是功,心體離念是德;不離自性是功,應用無染是德。
Inner heart humble under is before merits, outside actions according to rites is after merits; self nature build all Teachings is before merits, heart body away thought is after merits; not away nature is before merits, apply use without contamination is after merits.
若覓功德法身,但依此作,是真功德。
If seek merits Teaching Body, but according this does, is real merits.
若修功德之人,心即不輕,常行普敬。
If cultivate merits person, heart must be no disrespectful, always action cross the board respect.
心常輕人,吾我不斷,即自無功;自性虛妄不實,即自無德;為吾我自大,常輕一切故。
Heart always look down people, self concepts non-stop, then self no before merits; self nature illusion not real, then self no after merits; for self concepts self big, always look down everything because.
善知識!念念無間是功,心行平直是德;自修性是功,自修身是德。
Good knowledge people! Thought thought non-stop is before merits, heart action calm upright is after merits; self cultivate nature is before merits, self cultivate body is after merits.
善知識!功德須自性內見,不是布施供養之所求也。
Good knowledge people! Merits need self nature inner see, not give donations rearing food to get.
是以福德與功德別。
Therefore future happiness & merits differences.
武帝不識真理,非我祖師有過。」
Emperor Liang Wu does not know the Truth, not my Big Teacher has mistake."
刺史又問曰:「弟子常見僧俗念阿彌陀佛,願生西方。
Diplomat Wei again asks: "disciple me always see monk & in-house cultivators recite Buddha All Lights, wishing to born west.
請和尚說,得生彼否?願為破疑。」
Hope Monk Teacher says, get born yes no? Hope you clear my doubts."
師曰:「使君善聽!惠能與說。
Teacher: "you Gentleman kindly listen! Hui Neng me says to you.
世尊在舍衛城中,說西方引化經文,分明去此不遠。
Buddha inside City Se Wei, says West Side Guide To Scripture wording, clearly states go from here not far.
若論相說里數,有十萬八千,即身中十惡八邪,便是說遠。
If discuss appearance says distance, has 108 thousands, is body inside 10 evils 8 wicked, then says far.
說遠為其下根,說近為其上智;人有兩種,法無兩般。
Say far is for lower root, say near is for upper wise, people have 2 types, Teaching does not have 2 types.
迷悟有殊,見有遲疾。
Lost-way & enlightened have difference, seeing have late & early.
迷人念佛求生於彼,悟人自淨其心,所以佛言「隨其心淨即佛土淨」。
Lost-way people recite Buddha hope to born other Land, enlightened people self clean their hearts, therefore Buddha says according heart clean then Buddha Lands clean.
使君東方人,但心淨即無罪;雖西方人,心不淨亦有[愆*]。
Diplomat you are eastern people, but heart clean then no sin; even western people, hearts not clean then have sins.
凡愚不了自性,不識身中淨土,願東願西;悟人在處一般。
Common stupid people do not know self nature, do not know body inside clean lands, wish east wish west, enlightened people are where they are.
所以佛言:「隨所住處恒安樂」。
Therefore Buddha says: according live place forever comfortable & happy.
使君心地但無不善,西方去此不遠。
Diplomat you heart place no evil, west go from here not far.
若懷不善之心,念佛往生難到。
If have no good heart, recite Buddha go Land difficult.
今勸善知識,先除十惡,即行十萬;後除八邪,乃過八千;念念見性,常行平直,到如彈指,便覩彌陀。
Today encourage good knowledge people, first get rid of 10 evils, is then move 100 thousands miles; then get rid 8 wicked, is then move 8000 miles; thought thought see nature, always actions equal upright, just like bouncing finger, seeing Buddha All Lights.
使君但行十善,何須更願往生?
Diplomat you just do 10 goods, why need to wish born other Lands?
不斷十惡之心,何佛即來迎請?
Do not cut off 10 evils of heart, which Buddha will come & welcome?
若悟無生頓法,見西方只在剎那;不悟,念佛求生,路遙如何得達?
If understand no born instanteous Teaching, see west just need a moment; do not understand, recite Buddha to born land, road far how to reach?
惠能與諸人移西方如剎那間目前便見。各願見否?」
Hui Neng me with you people move west in a moment in front can see. Everyone wish see not?"
眾皆頂禮云:「若此處見,何須更願往生?
The crowd all bow saying: "if here can see, what need to wish born other Lands?
願和尚慈悲,便現西方,普令得見。」
Wish Monk Teacher compassionate, appear Western Land, for all to see."
師言:「大眾!世人自身是城,眼耳鼻舌是門。
Teacher says: "people! Common people their bodies are cities, the eyes ears noses tongues are doors.
外有五門,內有意門。
Outside have 5 doors, inside has thought door.
心是地,性是王;王居心地上。
The heart is ground, the nature is king; the king is in the heart ground on top.
性在王在,性去王無。
Nature there king there, nature gone king disappear.
性在身心存,性去身心壞。
Nature there body heart exists, nature gone body heart spoil.
佛向性中作,莫向身外求!
Buddha direct to nature do, do not direct body outside seek!
自性迷即是眾生,自性覺即是佛。
Self nature lost-way is then world beings, self nature enlightened is then Buddha.
慈悲即是觀音,喜捨名為勢至。
Compassionate is then Sub-Buddha Guan Yin, happy give is named Sub-Buddha Shi Zhi.
能淨即釋迦,平直即彌陀。
Able clean is then Buddha Shi Jia, fair upright is then Buddha All Lights.
人我是須彌,邪心是海水,煩惱是波浪,毒害是惡龍,虛妄是鬼神,塵勞是魚鼈,貪嗔是地獄,愚癡是畜生。
People & me is Mountain Xu Mi, wicked heart is sea water, heart troubles are waves, poison bads are bad dragons, illusions are ghosts & gods, dust labours are fishes & tortoises, greed & anger are hell, stupidity are animals.
善智識!常行十善,天堂便至;除人我,須彌倒;去邪心,海水竭;煩惱無,波浪滅;毒害忘,魚龍绝。
Good knowledge people! Always do ten goods, Heaven then comes; get rid people & me, Mountain Xu Mi collapses; get rid wicked heart, sea water dry up; no heart troubles, waves disappear; poisons bads forget, fishes & dragons extinct.
自心地上,覺性如來,放大光明,外照六門清淨,能破六欲諸天。
Self heart ground top, enlightened nature Buddha, put out big brightness, outside shine 6 doors clean, able break 6 desires many heavens.
自性內照,三毒即除;地獄等罪,一時消滅。
Self nature inside shine, 3 poisons is then get rid; Hell etc sins, this moment disappear.
內外明徹,不異西方。
Inside & outside understand throughout, no difference from Western Lands.
不作此修,如何到彼?」
Do not this cultivate, how to reach the other side?"
大眾聞說,了然見性。
The crowd hears said, get now to see nature.
悉皆禮拜,俱歎:「善哉!」
All make bow, acclaim: "goodness!"
唱言:「普願法界眾生,聞者一時悟解。」
Singing: "hope all Teaching Realm common beings, hear these one time enlightened what explained."
師言:「善知識!若欲修行,在家亦得,不由在寺。
Teacher says: "good knowledge people! If wish to cultivate action, inside home also can, not necessary in Temple.
在家能行,如東方人心善;在寺不修,如西方人心惡。
Inside home able to action, like Eastern people heart good; in Temple do not cultivate, like western people heart evil.
但心清淨,即是自性西方。」
But heart clean, is then self nature at Western Lands."
韋公又問:「在家如何修行,願為教授。」
Diplomat Wei again asks: "inside home how to cultivate action, please teach us."
師言:「吾與大眾說無相頌,但依此修,常與吾同處無別。
Teacher says: "I with you people say no appearance poem, but according this cultivate, always with me same place no difference.
若不作此修,剃髮出家,於道何益?」
If do not use this cultivate, shave hair become monk, with Tao (way) what use?"
頌曰:「心平何勞持戒?行直何用修禪?
Heart calm why labour to keep must-nots? Action upright what use cultivate Zen sitting?
恩則孝养父母,義則上下相憐;讓則尊卑和睦,忍則眾惡無喧。
Gratitude then filial rear parents, righteousness then up down both care, giving then respectful & lowly peacefully together, endure then crowd evil do not say out.
若能鑽木取火,淤泥定生紅蓮。
If able drill wood get fire, inside mud definitely born red lotus flower.
苦口的是良藥,逆耳必是忠言。
Mouth bitter is good medicine, against ear definitely is good advice.
改過必生智慧,護短心內非賢。
Correction definitely born wisdom, protect mistakes heart inside not sub-sage.
日用常行饒益,成道非由施錢。
Daily use always action good things, reach Tao (way) not through donate money.
菩提只向心覓,何勞向外求玄?
Buddha Nature only direct into heart seek, why labour direct out seek mysterious?
聽說依此修行,天堂只在目前。」
Hear say according these cultivate action, Heaven is only in front of eyes.
師復曰:「善知識!總須依偈修行,見取自性,直成佛道!
Teacher repeat: "good knowledge people! To summarize need to according poem cultivate action, see get self nature, straight become Buddha Tao (way)!
法不相待。眾人且散,吾歸曹溪。
Teachings do not face difference. You people disperse, I return Place Cao Xi.
眾若有疑,欲來相問。」
You people have doubts, can come ask me."
時,刺史官僚,在會善男信女,各得開悟,信受奉行。」
Then, Diplomat Wei & Officials, at meeting good males & good females, each get enlightened, believe receive implement."
師示眾云:「善知識!我此法門,以定慧為本。
Teacher tells the crowd: "good knowledge people! My this Teaching Method, use Zen-fixed & Wisdom as foundations.
大眾勿迷言『定慧別』!
You people do not lost-way & say Zen-fixed & Wisdom are different!
定慧一體,不是二。
Zen-fixed & Wisdom is one body, not two.
定是慧體,慧是定用;即慧之時定在慧,即定之時慧在定。
Zen-fixed is Wisdom body, Wisdom is Zen-fixed use; is Wisdom time Zen-fixed is in Wisdom, is Zen-fixed time Wisdom is in Zen-fixed.
若識此義,即是定慧等學。
If know this meaning, is then Zen-fixed & Wisdom etc learning.
諸學道人!莫言『先定發慧,先慧發定』各別!
You learning Tao (way) people! Do not day first Zen-fixed to start Wisdom, or first Wisdom to start Zen-fixed, their difference!
作此見者,法有二相。
Make this thinking persons, Teaching has 2 appearance.
口說善語,心中不善;空有定慧,定慧不等。
Mouth say good words, heart inside no good; do not have Zen-fixed & Wisdom, Zen-fixed & Wisdom not the same level.
若心口俱善,內外一如,定慧即等。
If heart & mouth both good, inside & outside the same, Zen-fixed & Wisdom then same level.
自悟修行,不在於諍;若諍先後,即同迷人。
Self-enlightened cultivation action, not in arguments; if argue first or later, is same as lost-way people.
不斷勝負,卻增『我法』,不離四相。
Non-stop winning & losing, only increase "my appearance teaching", do not away from 4 appearances.
善知識!定慧猶如何等?
Good knowledge people! Zen-fixed & Wisdom how to different level.
猶如燈光。
Like lamp lights.
有燈即光,無燈即暗;燈是光之體,光是燈之用;名雖有二.體本同一。
Have lamp then light, no lamp then dark; lamp is lights body, light is lamp use; names although have two, body originally same one.
此定慧法,亦復如是。」
This Zen-fixed & Wisdom Teaching, also like that."
師示眾云:「善知識!一行三昧者,於一切處行住坐臥常行一直心是也。
Teacher tells crowd: "good knowledge people! One Action Three Wisdom person, in all where move live sit sleep all the same heart.
《淨名經》云:『直心是道場,直心是淨土。』
Clean Name Scripture says: "upright heart is Temple, upright heart is Clean Lands."
莫:心行諂曲、口但說直!
Do not: heart action on appearance, mouth but say upright!
口說一行三昧、不行直心。
Mouth says One Action Three Wisdom, do not action upright heart.
但行直心,於一切法勿有執著!
If action upright heart, in all Teachings do not have fixations!
迷人著法相,執一行三昧,直言『常坐不動、妄不起心、即是一行三昧』。
Lost-way people fixed Teaching appearance, stubborn on One Action Three Wisdom, say straightly "always sit do not move, do not illusion give heart, is then One Action Three Wisdom."
作此解者,即同無情,卻是障道因緣。
Do this explanation person, is like no feeling, but obstacle Tao (way) cause fate.
善知識!道須通流!何以卻滯?
Good knowledge people! Tao (way) needs go through flow! Why obstruct?
心不住法,道即通流。
Heart do not hold to Teaching, Tao (way) then go through flow.
心若住法,名為自縛。
Heart if hold to Teaching, is named self tied-up.
若言常坐不動是,只如舍利弗宴坐林中卻被維摩詰訶。
If say always sit do not move is it, is like Buddha Disciple She Li Fu sits in forest but get shouted by Buddha Disciple Wei Mo Jie.
善知識!又有人教坐,看心觀靜,不動不起,從此置功。
Good knowledge people! Have other people teach sit, see heart observe quietness, do not move do not rise, from then build merits.
迷人不會,便執成顛,如此者眾。
Lost-way people do not know how, then fixed become upside down, have these kind of people.
如是相教,故知大錯。」
If like that teach, then become big mistake."
師示眾云:「善知識!本來正教無有頓漸,人性自有利鈍。
Teacher tells crowd: "good knowledge people! Originally Correct Teaching no have instanteous & gradual, people nature self have sharp & blunt.
悟人頓契;自識本心,自見本性,即無差別;所以立頓漸之假名。
Enlightened people instanteous understand, self know original heart, self see original nature, is no difference; therefore setup instanteous & gradual false names.
善知識!我此法門,從上以來,先立無念為宗,無相為體,無住為本。
Good knowledge people! My this Teaching Method, since creation, first use no thought as main point, no appearance as body, no fixation as foundation.
無相者,於相而離相;無念者,於念而無念;無住者,人之本性。
No appearance, as appearance away from appearance; no thought, as thought is no thought; no fixation, human's original nature.
於世間善惡好醜,乃至冤之與親,言語觸刺欺爭之時,并將為空,不思酬害。
As world good evil beautiful ugly, to enmity & closeness, words confrontation attack & competition time, all take as empty, do not think entertain or revenge.
念念之中,不思前境。
Thought thought within, do not think before environment.
若前念今念後念,念念相續不斷,名為繫縛。
If before thought now thought after thought, thought thought all continuous non-stop, is named tying up.
於諸法上,念念不住,即無縛也。
As on all Teachings, thought thought no fixation, is then no typing up.
此是以「無住」為本。
This is from "no fixation" as foundation.
善知識!外離一切相,名為「無相」。
Good knowledge people! Outside away from all appearances, is named "no appearance".
能離於相,則法體清淨。
Able away from appearance, then Teaching Body clean.
此是以「無相」為體。
This is using "no appearance" as body.
善知識!於諸境上,心不染,曰「無念」。
Good knowledge people! On all environment up, heart not corrupted, is called "no thought".
於自念上,常離諸境,不於境上生心。
On self thought up, always away from all environments, not on environment up born heart.
若只百物不思,念盡除卻;一念绝即死,別處受生;是為大錯。
If only all things do not think, thought completely remove; one thought do not have is dead, other place become born; is making big mistake.
學道者思之!
Learn Tao (way) people think of!
若不識法意,自錯猶可,更勸他人,自迷不見,又謗佛經。
If do not know Teaching meanings, self mistake is sufficient, but persuade others, self lost-way not see, & criticize-destroy Buddha Scriptures.
所以立「無念」為宗。
Therefore setup "no though" as main sect.
善知識!云何立「無念」為宗?
Good knowledge people! Ask how setup "no thought" as main sect?
只緣口說見性迷人,於境上有念,念上便起邪見,一切塵勞妄想從此而生。
Only fate mouth say see nature to misled people, on environment up have thought, thought up then arise wrong thinking, all dust labours illusions from here & born.
自性本無一法可得,若有所得,妄說禍福,即是塵勞邪見。
Self nature originally no one Teaching can get, if have get, illusion say misfortune & fortune, is then dust labours wrong thinking.
故此法門立「無念」為宗。
Therefore this Teaching Method setup "no thought" as main sect.
善知識!無者,無何事?
Good knowledge people! Do not have, do not have what thing?
念者,念何物?
Thought, thought what thing?
無者,無二相,無諸塵勞之心。
Do not have, do not have two appearance, no all dust labours of heart.
念者,念真如本性。
Thought, thought real Buddha original nature.
真如即是念之體,念即是真如之用。
Real Buddha nature is thought of body, thought is real Buddha nature of use.
真如自性起念,非眼耳鼻舌能念。
Real Buddha nature self nature arise thought, is not eyes ears nose tongue able thought.
真如有性,所以起念;真如若無,眼耳色聲,當時即壞。
Real Buddha nature have nature, therefore arise thought; real Buddha nature if do not have, eyes ears colours sounds, immediately spoiled.
善知識!真如自性起念,六根雖有見聞覺知,不染萬境,而真性常自在。
Good knowledge people! Real Buddha nature self nature arise thoughts, six senses although have see hear conscious know, do not contaminate with all environments, & real nature always there.
故經云:『能善分別諸法相,於第一義而不動。』」
Therefore Scripture says: "able good differentiate all Teaching appearances, in number one meaning do not move." "
師示眾云:「此門坐禪,元不看心,亦不看淨,亦不是不動。
Teacher tells crowd: "this Method sit Zen, not to see heart, & not to see clean, & do not not move.
若言看心,心厡是妄,知心如幻,故無所看也。
If say see heart, heart originally is illusion, know heart like illusion, therefore nothing to see.
若言看淨,人性本淨,由妄念故蓋覆真如,但無妄想,性自清淨;起心看淨,卻生淨妄;妄無處所,看者是妄。
If say see clean, people nature originally clean, from illusion thought therefore cover true Buddha, but no illusion thinking, nature self clear clean; from heart see clean, but born clean illusion, illusion no place rest, see things are illusions.
淨無形相,卻立淨相,言是工夫;作此見者,障自本性,卻被淨縛。
Clean no physical appearance, but setup clean appearance, saying is hard works; do this thought, obstacle self original nature, but get clean tie-up.
善知識!若修不動者,但見一切人時,不見人之是非善惡過患,即是自性不動。
Good knowledge people! If cultivate not move things, but see all people time, do not see people of bad good mistakes wrongs, is then self nature not move.
善知識!迷人身雖不動,開口便說他人是非長短好惡,與道違背。
Good knowledge people! Lost-way people bodies although not move, open mouth immediately say other people right wrong good points bad points love dislike, with Tao (way) against.
若看心看淨,即障道也。」
If see heart see clean, is obstacle Tao (way)."
師示眾云:「善知識!何名『坐禪』?
Teacher tells crowd: "good knowledge people! What is named "sit Zen"?
此法門中,無障無礙,外於一切善惡境界心念不起,名為『坐』;內見自性不動,名為『禪』。
This Teaching Method inside, no obstacle no obstruction, outside away from all good evil appearance environment heart thought not arise, is named "sit"; inside see self nature do not move, is named "Zen".
善知識!何名『禪定』?
Good knowledge people! What is named "Zen stable"?
外離相為禪,內不亂為定。
Outside away appearance is Zen, inside not chaos is stable.
外若著相,內心即亂;外若離相,心即不亂。
Outside if fixed on appearance, inside heart then chaos; outside if away from appearance, heart then not chaos.
本性自淨自定,只為見境思境即亂。
Self nature self clean self stable, is because see environment think environment then chaos.
若見諸境心不亂者,是真定也。
If see all environments heart not chaos persons, are real stable.
善知識!外離相即禪,內不亂即定,外禪內定,是為『禪定』。
Good knowledge people! Outside away appearance is Zen, inside not chaos is stable, outside Zen inside stable, is known as Zen stable.
《菩薩戒經》云:『我本性元自清淨。』
Sub-Buddha Must-Not Scripture says: "my self nature is wholely self clean clear."
善知識!於念念中,自見本性清淨,自修、自行,自成佛道。」
Good knowledge people! Inside thought thought, self see original nature clean clear, self cultivate, self action, self become Buddha Tao (way)."
時,大師見廣、韶洎四方士庶駢集山中聽法,於是陞座告眾曰:「來!諸善知識!此事須從自性中起。
Then, big Teacher see Place Guang, Place Shao Ji Gentleman & Common People gather mountain inside hear Teachings, therefore rise seat tell crowd: "come! Every good knowledge people! This thing need from self nature inside arise.
於一切時,念念自淨其心,自修其行,見自己法身,見自心佛,自度自戒,始得不假到此。
As every time, thought thought self clean the heart, self cultivate the actions, see own Teaching Body, see self heart Buddha, self save self must-not, from start cannot fake till here.
既從遠來,一會於此,皆共有緣。
Is from far come, one meeting as here, all have fate.
今可各各胡跪!
Today can everyone one-leg knee!
先為傳『自性五分法身香』,次授『無相懺悔』。」
First for transfer-teach "self nature five divide Teaching Body incense, then teach "no appearance repentance."
眾胡跪。
The crowd one-leg knee.
師曰:「一、戒香:即自心中無非、無惡、無嫉妒、無貪嗔、無劫害,名『戒香』。
Teacher: "one, Must-Not Incense: is self heart inside no wrong, no evil, no jealousy, no greed anger, no disaster harming, is named "Must-not Incense".
二、定香:即睹諸善惡境相,自心不亂,名『定香』。
Two, Stable Incense: is see all good evil environment appearance, self heart not chaos, is named "Stable Incense".
三、慧香:自心無礙,常以智慧觀照自性,不造諸惡;雖修眾善,心不執著;敬上念下,矜恤孤貧;名「慧香」。
Three, Wisdom Incense: self heart no obstacle, always use wisdom see shine self nature, do not build all evil, although cultivate all good, heart do not fixed on; respect up thought below, pity lonely & poor, is named "Wisdom Incense".
四、解脫香:即自心無所攀緣,不思善,不思惡,自在無礙,名『解脫香』。
Four, Release-From-Reincarnation Incense: is self heart no get along fate, do not think good, do not think evil, self free no obstacle, is named "Release-From-Reincarnation Incense".
五、解脫知見香:自心既無所攀緣善惡,不可沉空守寂,即須廣學多聞,識自本心,達諸佛理,和光接物,無我無人,直至菩提,真性不易,名『解脫知見香』。
Five, Release-From-Reincarnation Know See Incense: self heart is no get along fate good & evil, cannot sink into emptiness guard loneliness, need broad learn more hear, know self original heart, reach all Buddha Truth, with light receive things, no me no other people, straight to Buddha Nature, real nature not change, is named "Release-From-Reincarnation Know See Incense".
善智識!此香各自內薰,莫向外覓!
Good knowledge people! This incense each self inside burn, do not look outside seek!
今與汝等授「無相懺悔」,滅三世罪,令得三業清淨。
Today with you etc teach "No Appearance Repentance", disappear 3 lifetimes sins, make get 3 sins histories clear clean.
善知識!各隨我語一時道:「弟子等,從前念今念及後念,念念不被愚迷染;從前所有惡業愚迷等罪,悉皆懺悔,願一時消滅,永不復起。
Good knowledge people! Everyone with me words one time out: "disciple me etc, past thought today thought & afterward thought, thought thought do not get stupidly lost-way contaminated; past all evil sins history stupidity lost-way etc sins, all repent, wish one time disappear, forever do not repeat rise.
弟子等,從前念今念及後念,念念不被憍誑染,從前所有惡業憍誑等罪,悉皆懺悔,願一時消滅,永不復起。
Disciple me etc, past thought today thought & afterward thought, thought thought do not get proudness contaminated, pass all evil sins history proudness etc sins, all repent, wish one time disappear, forever do not repeat rise.
弟子等,從前念今念及後念,念念不被嫉妒染,從前所有惡業嫉妒等罪,悉皆懺悔,願一時消滅,永不復起。
Disciple me etc, past thought today thought & afterward thought, thought thought do not get jealousy contaminated, pass all evil sins history jealousy etc sins, all repent, wish one time disappear, forever do not repeat rise.
善知識!已上是為『無相懺悔』。

云何名『懺』?
What is named before-word-repentance?
云何名『悔』?
What is named after-word-repentance?
懺者,懺其前愆;從前所有惡業,愚迷憍誑嫉妒等罪,悉皆盡懺,永不復起,是名為懺。
Before-word-repentance, repent past wrongs, past all evil sin history, stupidity lost-way proudness jealousy etc sins, all completely repented, forever do not repeat arise, is named before-word-repentance.
悔者,悔其後過;從今已後,所有惡業,愚迷憍誑嫉妒等罪,今已覺悟,悉皆永斷,更不復作,是名為悔,故稱懺悔。
After-word-repentance, regret the afterward wrongs, from today onwards, all evil sins history, stupidity lost-way proudness jealousy etc sins, today already realized enlightened, all completely cut-off, further do not repeat do, is named after-word-repentance, is therefore known repentance.
凡夫愚迷,只知懺其前愆,不知悔其後過。
Common people stupid lost-way, only know repent all past wrongs, do not know regret not doing afterward wrongs.
以不悔故,前罪不滅,後過又生。
For not regret because, past sins not disappear, afterward wrongs again do.
前罪既不滅,後過復又生,何名『懺悔』?
Past sins then not make disappear, later wrong again born, what is named "repentance"?
善知識!既懺悔已,與善知識發『四弘誓願』:各須用心正聽!
Good knowledge people! Are repentance already, with good knowledge people vow "4 Big Vows": everyone needs use heart correct!
『自心眾生無邊誓願度,自心煩惱無邊誓願斷;自性法門無盡誓願學,自性無上佛道誓願成。』
"Self heart reincarnation being no limit vow to save, self heart heart troubles no limit vow to cut-off; self nature Teaching Methods no limit vow to learn, self nature no upper Buddha Tao (way) vow to become."
善知識!大家豈不道「眾生無邊誓願度」?
Good knowledge people! You people do you not say "reincarnated beings no limit vow to save"?
恁麼道,且不是惠能度。
Following this, not me Hui Neng save.
心中眾生,所謂邪迷心、誑妄心、不善心、嫉妒心、惡毒心,如是等心,盡是眾生;各須自性自度,是名真度。
Heart inside reincarnated beings, are the wicked lost-way hearts, way-out illusion hearts, not good hearts, jealousy hearts, evil poisonous heart, all these etc hearts, all are reincarnated beings, each need self nature self save, is named real save.
何名『自性自度』?
What is named "self nature self save"?
即自心中邪見煩惱愚痴眾生,將正見度。
Is self heart inside wicked thoughts heart troubles stupidity reincarnated beings, need correct thought save.
既有正見,使般若智打破愚痴迷妄眾生,各各自度。
Then have correct thought, use wise wisdom hit break stupidity lost-way illusion reincarnated beings, each each self save.
邪來正度,迷來悟度,愚來智度,惡來善度,如是度者,名為真度。
Wicked come correct save, lost-way come enlightened save, stupidity come wisdom save, evil come good save, like that save, is named real save.
又,煩惱無邊誓願斷,將自性般若智除卻虛妄思想心是也。
And, heart troubles no limit vow to cut-off, turn self nature wise wisdom get rid empty illusion thinking hearts are then.
又,法門無盡誓願學,須自見性,常行正法,是名『真學』。
And, Teaching Method no limit vow to learn, need self see nature, always action correct Teachings, is named "real learning".
又,無上佛道誓願成,既常能下心,行於真正,離迷離覺,常生般若,除真除妄,即見佛性,即言下佛道成。
And, no upper Buddha Tao (way) vow to complete, is always able put heart, action on real correct, away lost-way away know, always born wisdom, get rid real get rid illusion, then see Buddha nature, is then under words Buddha Tao (way) complete.
常念修行,是願力法。
Always thought cultivate action, is vow strength Teaching.
善知識!今發『四弘願』了,更與善知識授『無相三歸依戒』。
Good knowledge people! Today make "4 Big Vows", then with you good knowledge people teach "No Appearance Three Belong To Must-Do".
善知識!歸依覺,兩足尊;歸依正,離欲尊;歸依淨,眾中尊。
Good knowledge people! Belong to enlightened, 2 legs Buddha; belong to correct, away desire Buddha; belong to clean, inside crowd Buddha.
從今日去,稱覺為師,更不歸依邪魔外道!
From today onwards, address enlightened as Teacher, no more belong to wicked satans outside Tao people.
以自性三寶常自證明。
Use self nature 3 Treasures always self proof.
勸善知識歸依自性三寶:佛者,覺也;法者,正也;僧者,淨也。
Advise you good knowledge people belong to self nature 3 Treasures: Buddha, enlightened; Teaching, correct; Cultivator Monk, clean.
自心歸依覺,邪迷不生,少欲知足,能離財色,名兩足尊。
Self heart belong to enlightened, wicked lost-way do not born, few desire contended, able away from money & sex, is named 2 legs Buddha.
自心歸依正,念念無邪見,以無邪見故,即無人我貢高貪愛執著,名離欲尊。
Self heart belong to correct, thought thought no wicked thought, for no wicked thought see, is no other people self proudness greedy love fixation, is named away desire Buddha.
自心歸依淨,一切塵勞愛欲境界,自性皆不染著,名眾中尊。
Self heart belong to clean, all dust labour love desire environments, self nature all do not contaminate with, is named inside crowd Buddha.
若修此行,是自歸依。
If cultivate this action, is self belong to.
凡夫不會,從日至夜,受三歸戒;若言歸依佛,佛在何處?
Common people do not know, from day to night, receive 3 Belong To Must-Do; if say belong to Buddha, Buddha is where?
若不見佛,憑何所歸?
If cannot see Buddha, base on what to belong to?
言卻成妄。
Saying but become illusions.
善知識!各自觀察!
Good knowledge people! Each self observe!
莫錯用心!
Do not wrong use heart!
經文分明言「自歸依佛」,不言「歸依他佛」。
Scripture wordings clearly say "self belong to Buddha", not say "belong to other people Buddha".
自佛不歸,無所依處。
Self Buddha do not belong to, no place to rely.
今既自悟,各須歸依自心三寶!
Today then self enlightened, each need belong to self heart 3 Treasures.
內調心性,外敬他人,是自歸依也。
Inside adjust heart nature, outside respect other people, is self belong to.
善知識!既歸依自三寶竟,各各志心,吾與說「一體三身自性佛」,令汝等見三身,了然自悟自性。
Good knowledge people! Is then belong to self 3 Treasures then, each each ambition heart, I with you say "one body three bodies self nature Buddha", make you etc see three bodies, then know self enlightened self nature.
總隨我道:「於自色身歸依清淨法身佛,於自色身歸依圓滿報身佛,於自色身歸依千百億化身佛。」
Finally follow I say: "use self physical body belong to clean clear Teaching body Buddha, use self physical body belong to complete full fulfilled body Buddha, use self physical body belong to thousand hundred billions change body Buddha."
善知識!色身是舍宅,不可言歸。
Good knowledge people! Physical body is physical house, cannot say belong to.
向者三身佛,在自性中,世人總有。
Belong to three body Buddhas, in self nature inside, common people all have.
為自心迷,不見內性;外覓三身如來,不見自身中有三身佛。
Because self heart lost-way, do not see inner nature; outside seek three body Buddhas, do not see self body inside have three body Buddhas.
汝等聽說!令汝等於自身中見自性有三身佛。
You etc listen me say1 For you etc make self body inside see self nature have three body Buddhas.
此三身佛,從自性生,不從外得。
This three body Buddhas, from self nature born, not from outside get.
何名『清淨法身佛』?
What is named "Clear Clean Teaching Body Buddha"?
世人性本清淨,萬法從自性生。
Common people nature originally clear clean, all Teachings from self nature born.
思量一切惡事,即生惡行;思量一切善事,即生善行。
Think all evil things, then born evil actions; think all good things, then born good actions.
如是諸法在自性中,如天常清,日月常明;為浮雲蓋覆,上明下暗,忽遇風吹雲散,上下俱明,萬象皆現。
If all Teachings in self nature inside, like sky always clear, sun & moon always bright; because floating clouds cover hidden, up bright bottom dark, suddenly get wind flow clouds disperse, up & bottom both bright, all appearances all appear.
世人性常浮游,如彼天雲。
Common people nature always floating wandering, like the sky cloud.
善知識!智如日,慧如月,智慧常明;於外著境,被妄念浮雲蓋覆自性,不得明朗。
Good knowledge people! Wisdom is like sun, wise is like moon, wisdom always bright; for outside fix on environments, get illusion thoughts floating clouds cover hidden self nature, unable get bright through.
若遇善知識,聞真正法,自除迷妄,內外明徹,於自性中萬法皆現。
If meet good knowledge people, hear real correct Teachings, self get rid lost-way illusions, inside & outside bright through, then self nature inside all Teachings all appear.
見性之人亦復如是。
See nature persons also like that.
此名清淨法身佛。
This is named Clear Clean Teaching Body Buddha.
善知識!自心歸依自性,是歸依真佛。
Good knowledge people! Self heart belong to self nature, is belong to real Buddha.
自歸依者,除卻自性中不善心、嫉妒心、諂曲心、吾我心、誑妄心、輕人心、慢他心、邪見心、貢高心、及一切時中不善之行;常自見己過,不說他人好惡,是自歸依。
Self belong to people, get rid self nature inside no good heart, jealous heart, flattery heart, self concept heart, lie illusion heart, look down people heart, look lightly people heart, wicked thought heart, proud high heart, & all time inside no good actions; always self see own mistake, do not say other people good or bad, is self belong to.
常須下心,普行恭敬,即是見性通達,更無滯礙,是自歸依。
Always need down heart, broadly action respect, is then see nature reach through, with no obstacle, is self belong to.
何名『圓滿報身』?
What is named "Complete Full Fulfilled Body"?
譬如一燈能除千年暗,一智能滅萬年愚。
For example one light can get rid thousand years dark, one wisdom can disappear ten thousand years stupidity.
莫思向前,已過不可得;常思於後,念念圓明,自見本性。
Do think forward, already mistake cannot get; always think back, thought thought complete bright, self see original nature.
善惡雖殊,本性無二;無二之性,名為實性。
Good evil although different, original nature no two; no two of nature, is named realistic nature.
於實性中,不染善惡,此名『圓滿報身佛』。
On realistic nature inside, do not contaminate good & evil, this is named "Complete Full Fulfilled Body Buddha".
自性起一念惡,滅萬劫善因;自性起一念善,得恒沙惡盡。
Self nature rises one thought evil, disappear ten thousand disaster time good cause seeds; self nature rise one thought good, get River Heng sands evil gone.
直至無上菩提,念念自見,不失本念,名為『報身』。
Straight to no upper Buddha Nature, thought thought self see, do not lose original thought, is named "Fulfilled Body".
何名『千百億化身』?
What is named "Thousand Hundred Billions Change Body"?
若不思萬法,性本如空;一念思量,名為『變化』。
If do not think ten thousand Teachings, nature original like empty, one thought thinking capacity, is named "change turn to".
思量惡事,化為地獄;思量善事,化為天堂;毒害,化為龍蛇;慈悲,化為菩薩;智慧,化為上界;愚癡,化為下方。
Thinking evil things, change become Hell; thinking good things, change become Heaven; poison harming, change become dragon & snake; compassionate, change become Sub-Buddha; wisdom, change become upper Realm; stupidity, change become lower Realm.
自性變化甚多,迷人不能省覺。
Self nature changes a lots, lost-way people unable to reflect aware.
念念起惡,常行惡道;回一念善,智慧即生。
Thought thought rise evil, always action evil Tao (way); return one thought good, wisdom then born.
此名『自性化身佛』。
This is named "Self Nature Change Body Buddha".
善知識!法身本具,念念自性自見即是報身佛,從報身思量即是化身佛。
Good knowledge people! Teaching Body original have, thought thought self nature self see is then fulfilled body Buddha, from fulfilled body think capacity is then change body Buddha.
自悟自修自性功德,是真歸依。
Self enlightened self cultivate self nature merits, is real belong to.
皮肉是色身,即識自性佛。
Skin & meat is physical body, is know self nature Buddha.
吾有一『無相』頌,若能誦持,言下令汝積劫迷罪一時消滅。
I have one "No Appearance" Poem, if can recite cultivate with, words under make you accumulated disasters time lost-way sins one time gone.
頌曰:「迷人修福不修道,只言修福便是道;布施供养福無邊,心中三惡元來造。
Poem: "lost-way people cultivate happiness do not cultivate Tao (way), only say cultivate happiness is Tao (way); give donation rear food happiness no limit, heart inside three evils still come doing.
擬將修福欲滅罪,後世得福罪還在;但向心中除罪緣,各自性中真懺悔。
Think of cultivate happiness to disappear sins, later lifetime get happiness sins still there; but from heart inside get rid sins fate, each self nature inside real repent.
忽悟大乘真懺悔,除邪行正即無罪。
Suddenly know big Sect real repent, get rid wicked action correct then no sin.
學道常於自性觀,即與諸佛同一類。
Learn Tao (way) always in self nature observation, then with all Buddha same kind.
吾祖唯傳此頓法,普願見性同一體。
I Zen Master only transfer this instanteous Teaching, mass vow see nature same one body.
若欲當來覓法身,離諸法相心中洗。
If wish then come seek Teaching Body, away all teaching appearance heart inside wash.
努力自見莫悠悠!後念忽絕一世休!
Make effort self see do not waste time! Later thought suddenly stop one life end!
若悟大乘得見性,虔恭合掌至心求。」
If enlightened big Sect get see nature, respectfully palm together reach heart get."
師言:「善知識!總須誦取,依此修行!
Teacher says: "good knowledge people! Finally need recite get, according this cultivate action!
言下見性,雖去吾千里,如常在吾邊。
Words under see nature, even though away from me thousand miles, like always by my side.
以此言下不悟,即對面千里,何勸遠來?
For this words under do not enlightened, even face each other thousand miles, why encourage far come?
珍重好去!」
Treasure hard good go!"
一眾聞法,靡不開悟,歡喜奉行。
One crowd hears Teachings, all open enlightened, happily follow actions.
師自黃梅得法,回至韶州曹侯村,人無知者。
Teacher since from Place Huang Mei get Teaching, return to Province Shao Village Cao Hou, no one knows him.
時,有儒士劉志略,禮遇甚厚。
Then, have Confucian Scholar Liu Zhi Lue, courtesy treatment very heavy.
志略有姑為尼,名為無盡藏,常誦《大涅槃經》。
Scholar Zhi Lue has aunt as nun, named No Limit Hidden, always recite Big Become Void Scripture.
師暫聽即知妙義,遂為解說。
Teacher temporary listen then know wonder meaning, immediately for her explain say.
尼乃執卷問字,師曰:「字即不識,義即請問。」
Nun then point scroll asks word, Teacher: "words do not know, meaning please ask."
尼曰:「字尚不識,焉能會義?」
Nun: "words do not know, hoe able know meaning?"
師曰:「諸佛妙理,非關文字。」
Teacher: "all Buddha's wonder knowledge, not relate to words."
尼驚異之,遍告里中耆德云:「此是有道之士,宜請供養。」
Nun get shock surprise, tell everyone in village of virtues people: "this is has Tao (way) Monk, must please rear food."
有魏武系孫曹叔良及居民,競來瞻禮。
Have Person Wei Wu's great grandson Cao Shu Liang & residents, compete come pay respect.
時寶林古寺,自隋末兵火,已廢。
Then have Old Temple Bao Lin, since Dynasty Sui army fire, already destroyed.
遂於故基重建梵宇,延師居之,俄成寶坊。
Then in foundation rebuild Temple, invite Teacher lives in, very fast become Temple.
師住九月余日,又為惡黨尋遂,師乃遁於前山;被其縱火焚草木,師隱身挨入石中得免。
Teacher lives there 9 months plus, again get evil gang finds, Teacher then hide inside front mountain; get put fire burn grass & woods, Teacher hides body inside rock to get saved.
石今有師趺坐膝痕及布衣之紋,因名「避難石」。
Rock today has Teacher Zen sit knee trails & Clothing Treasure's trails, because named "Escape Disaster Rock".
師憶五祖懷會止藏之囑,遂行隱於二邑焉。
Teacher remembers 5th Zen Master Place Huai & Hui stop & hide instruction, quickly walk hide between the two Sub-Provinces.
僧法海,韶州曲江人也,初參祖師問曰:「即心即佛,願垂指諭。」
Monk Fa Hai, Province Shao Village Qu Jiang person, first meet 6th Zen Master asks: "is heart is Buddha, wish you give Teaching."
師曰:「前念不生即心,後念不滅即佛;成一切相即心,離一切相即佛。
Teacher: "front thought not born is heart, back thought not disappear is Buddha; complete all appearances is heart, away all appearances is Buddha.
吾若具說,窮劫不盡。
If I all say, infinite disasters time no end.
聽吾偈曰:『即心名慧,即佛乃定;定慧等持,意中清淨。
Hear my poem: "is heart named Wisdom, is Buddha then Zen-fixed; Zen-fixed & Wisdom etc cultivate with, thought inside clean clear.
悟此法門,由汝習性。
Enlightened this Teaching Method, with you habit nature.
用本無生,雙修是正。』」
Use foundation no born, double cultivate is correct." "
法海言下大悟,以偈讚曰:「即心元是佛,不悟而自屈;我知定慧因,雙修離諸物。」
Monk Fa Hai words under big enlightened, use poem to praise: "is heart originally is Buddha, do not enlightened then self hardship; I know Zen-fixed & Wisdom reason, double cultivate away all things."
僧法達,洪州人,七歲出家,常誦《法華經》;來禮祖師,頭不至地。
Monk Fa Da, Province Hong person, 7 years old become Monk, always recite Fa Hua Scripture; come meet 6th Zen Master, head do not bow ground.
祖訶曰:「禮不投地,何如不禮?
Master scold: "respect do not bow ground, why so not courteous?
汝心中必有一物,蘊習何事耶?」
Your heart inside definitely have one thing, hidden practice what thing?"
曰:「念《法華經》已及三千部。」
Say: "recite Fa Hua Scripture already 3000 times."
祖曰:「汝若念至萬部,得其經意,不以為勝,則與吾偕行。
Master: "you if recite to ten thousand times, get the Scripture's meaning, do not get proud, just same level as me action.
汝今負此事業,都不知過!
You today carry this accomplishment, but do not know mistakes!
聽吾偈曰:『禮本折慢幢,頭奚不至地?
Hear mine poem: "rites originally cut down slow proudness, head still not to ground?
有我罪即生,亡功福無比。』」
Have me concept sins then born, die concept merits happiness cannot compare." "
師又曰:「汝名甚麼?」
Teacher again asks: "your name is what?"
曰:「法達。」
Says: "Fa Da (Teaching Reach)."
師曰:「汝名法達,何曾達法?」
Teacher: "your name Teaching Reach, where have reach Teaching?"
復說偈曰:「汝今名法達,勤誦末休歇;空誦但循聲,明心號菩薩。
Again say poem: "you today name Fa Da (Teaching Reach), hardworking recite never rest; empty recite but follow sounds, understand heart is named Sub-Buddha.
汝今有緣故,吾今為汝說,但信佛無言,蓮花從口發。」
You today have fate because, I today for you say, but believe Buddha no say, lotus flower from mouth comes."
達聞偈,悔謝曰:「而今而後,當謙恭一切。
Monk Fa Da hears poem, regret thanking says: "from today onwards, will humble respect every thing.
弟子誦《法華經》,未解經義,心常有疑。
Disciple me recite Fa Hua Scripture, do not understand Scripture's meaning, heart always has doubts.
和尚智慧廣大,願略說經中義理。」
Monk Teacher's wisdom broad big, wish summarize what Scripture inside meanings & truth."
師曰:「法達!法即甚達,汝心不達;經本無疑,汝心自疑。
Teacher: "Monk Fa Da! Teaching is itself reach, your heart not reach; Scripture originally no doubt, your heart self doubts.
汝念此經,以何為宗?」
You recite this Scripture, with what as big meaning?"
達曰:「學人根性暗鈍,從來但依文誦念,豈知宗趣!」
Monk Fa Da: "student me root nature dark & slow, never but according words recite, how know big meaning fun!"
師曰:「吾不識文字,汝試取經誦一遍,吾當為汝解說。」
Teacher: "I do not know words, you try get from Scripture recite one time, I for you explain say."
法達即高聲念經,至譬喻品,師曰:「止!此經厡來以因緣出世為宗。
Monk Fa Da then loud voice recite Scripture, until Chapter Elaboration, Teacher: "stop! This Scripture is for cause fate to born this world as big meaning.
從說多種譬喻,亦無越於此。
From say many elaboration examples, then no further than these.
何者因緣?
For who cause fate?
經云:『諸佛世尊,唯以一大事因緣故出現於世。』
Scripture says: "all world respect Buddhas, only for one big thing cause fate reason born appear this world."
一大事者,佛之知見也。
One big thing, Buddha of know see.
世人外迷著相,內迷著空;若能於相離相,於空離空,即是內外不迷。
World people outside lost-way fixed on appearance, inside lost-way fixed on emptiness; if can with appearance away appearance, with emptiness away emptiness, is then inside & outside not lost-way.
若悟此法,一念心開,是為開佛知見。
If understand this Teaching, one thought heart open, is for open Buddha know see.
佛,猶覺也;分為四門;開「覺知見」,示「覺知見」,悟「覺知見」,入「覺知見」。
Buddha, just enlightened; divide become 4 Methods; open "Enlightened Know See", teach "Enlightened Know See", understand "enlightened know see", enter "Enlightened Know See".
若聞開示,便能悟入,即「覺知見」─「本來真性」而得出現。
If hear open Teaching, then able enlightened enter, then "Enlightened Know See" - "Original Real Nature" get to appear.
汝慎勿錯解經意!
You careful must not wrong understand Scripture's meaning!
見他道「開示悟入」,自是佛之知見,我輩無分。
See other says "open Teaching know enter", self think is Buddha know see, me & Teacher no difference.
若作此解,乃是謗經毀佛也。
If make this explanation, then is criticize Scripture & destroy Buddha.
彼既是佛,已具知見,何用更開?
You then is buddha, self has know see, what use then to open?
汝今當信:佛知見者,只汝自心,更無別佛。
You today must believe: Buddha know see, just your self heart, no other Buddha.
蓋為一切眾生,自蔽光明,貪愛塵境,外緣內擾,甘受驅馳;便勞他世尊,從三昧起,種種苦口,勸令寢息;莫向外求,與佛無二;故云:「開佛知見」。
For all common beings, self block light, greed love dust environment, outside fate inside disturbance, willing get driven; then labour him world respect Buddha, from 3 Knowledges, all kinds of bitter mouth, persuade order sleep rest; do not from outside seek, with Buddha no two; therefore say "Open Buddha Know See".
吾亦勸一切人,於自心中常開佛之知見。
I then encourage all people, from self heart inside always open Buddha of know see.
世人心邪,愚迷造罪,口善心惡,貪嗔嫉妒,諂佞我慢,侵人害物,自開眾生知見;若能正心,常生智慧,觀照自心,止惡行善,是自開佛之知見。
World people heart wicked, stupid lost-way committing sins, mouth good but heart evil, greedy anger & jealous, flattery self proud slow, rob other destroy things, self open common beings know see; if can correct heart, always born wisdom, see shine self heart, stop evil do good, is self open Buddha of know see.
汝須念念開佛知見,勿開眾生知見!
You need thought thought open Buddha know see, must not open common being know see!
開佛知見,即是出世;開眾生知見,即是世間。
Open Buddha know see, is then out of this world; open common beings know see, is then of this world.
汝若但勞勞執念,以為功課者,何異犛牛愛尾?」
You if but labour labour fixed on thought, thinking as homework, what difference farming cow like his tail?"
達曰:「若然者,但得解義,不勞誦經耶?」
Monk Fa Da: "if person, but get know meaning, still need labour recite Scripture?"
師曰:「經有何過?豈障汝念?
Teacher: "Scripture has what mistake? Become obstacle for you recite?
只為迷悟在人,損益由己。
Only for lost-way enlightened depend people, disadvantage benefits depend self."
口誦心行,即是轉經;口誦心不行,即是被經轉。
Mouth recite heart action, is then turning Scripture; mouth recite heart do not action, is then get Scripture turn you.
聽吾偈曰:『心迷法華轉,心悟轉法華。
Hear my poem: "heart lost-way Scripture Fa Hua turn, heart enlightened turn Scripture Fa Hua.
誦經久不明,與義作讎家。
Recite Scripture long do not understand, with meaning become enemy house.
無念念即止,有念念成邪。
No thought thought then sop, have thought thought become wicked.
有無俱不計,長御白牛車。』」
Have do not have all do not think about, long ride White Cow Car (Buddhism Big Sect)." "
達聞偈,不覺悲泣,言下大悟,而告師曰:「法達從昔已來,實未曾轉法華,乃被法華轉。」
Monk Fa Da hears poem, become sad crying, saying under big enlightened, tell Teacher: "Fa Da me since knowing come, actually never once turn Scripture Fa Hua, actually is get Scripture Fa Hua turn."
再啟曰:「經云:『諸大聲聞乃至菩薩,皆盡思共度量,不能測佛智。』
Again revealing: "Scripture says: "all big Hear-Knowledge to Sub-Buddhas, all their best thinking together thinking, unable to test Buddha wisdom."
今令凡夫但悟自心,便名佛之知見;自非上根,未免疑謗。
Today make me common person but understand self heart, then named Buddha of know see; self not upper root, cannot but suspicious destroying.
又經說三車,羊鹿牛車與白牛車如何區別?
Again Scripture says three cars, goat deer cow cars & white cow car how to differentiate?
願和尚再垂開示。」
Wish Monk Teacher again give Teaching."
師曰:「經意分明,汝自迷背!
Teacher: "Scripture meaning is clear, you self lost-way memorize!
諸三乘人,不能測佛智者,患在度量也!
All three types of people, unable to test Buddha wisdom, is because in their capacity!
饒伊盡思共推,轉加懸遠。
If they completely thinking together reasoning, turn add the big distance.
佛本為凡夫說,不為佛說,此理不肯信者,從他退席。
Buddha originally for common people say, not for Buddha say, this reasoning cannot believe, from your seat place withdraw.
殊不知坐卻白牛車,更於門外覓三車。
You do not know sitting on white cow car, yet at outside door look three cars.
況經文明向汝道:『唯一佛乘,無有餘乘;若二若三,乃至無數方便,種種因緣譬喻言詞,是法皆為一佛乘故。』
Further Scripture wordings clearly tell you say: "only one Buddha type, no have others; if two if three, to further countless easy ways, type type cause fate elaborations wordings, is Teaching only one Buddha class because."
汝何不省?
You why not self reflect?
三車是假,為昔時故;一乘是實,為今時故。
Three cars are fake, for old times reason; one Class is real, for today time reason.
只教汝去假歸實;歸實之後,實亦無名。
Only teach you away fake return real; return real after, actually no name.
應知所有珍財,盡屬於汝,由汝受用;更不作父想,亦不作子想,亦無用想,是名持《法華經》。
Should know all treasure & money, all belong to you, for you to use; and not make father think, and not make son think, just no use think, is named cultivate with Fa Hua Scripture.
從劫至劫,手不釋卷;從晝至夜,無不念時也。」
From disaster time to disaster time, hand do not off Scripture; from day to night, all is recite time.
達蒙啟發,踴躍歡喜,以偈讚曰:「經誦三千部,曹溪一句亡;未明出世旨,寧歇累生狂?
Monk Fa Da get enlightened, jumping happily, use poem to praise: "Scripture recite 3000 times, Place Cao Xi one statement die; do not understand out world mission, willing rest accumulated lifetimes sickness?
羊鹿牛權设,初中後善揚。
Goat deer cow type design, elementary secondary senior good spread.
誰知火宅內,元是法中王。」
Who know living house (non-Temple) inside, originally is Teaching King."
師曰:「汝今後方可名念經僧也。」
Teacher: "you from now on can be named Recite Scripture Monk."
達從此領玄旨,亦不輟誦經。
Monk Fa Da since get wonder instruction, then non-stop recite Scripture.
僧智通,壽州安豐人;看《楞伽經》約千餘遍,而不會三身四智,禮師求解其義。
Monk Zhi Tong (Wisdom Through), Province Shou Place An Feng person; see Leng Jia Scripture around thousand times, but unable to understand 3 Bodies 4 Wisdom, pay respect Teacher hope explain the meanings.
師曰:「三身者:清淨法身,汝之性也;圓滿報身,汝之智也;千百億化身,汝之行也。
Teacher: "3 Bodies: Clean Clear Teaching Body, your nature; Complete Full Fulfilled Body, your wisdom; Thousand Hundred Billions Change Body, your actions.
若離本性,別說三身,即名有身無智;若悟三身無有自性,即名四智菩提。
If away from original nature, do not say 3 Bodies, is named have body no wisdom; if understand 3 Bodies no have self nature, is named 4 Wisdom Buddha Nature.
聽吾偈曰:『自性具三身,發明成四智;不離見聞緣,超然登佛地。
Hear my poem: "self nature have 3 Bodies, become bright turns 4 Wisdom; do not leave see Knowledge Fate, above reach Buddha Lands.
吾今為汝說,諦信永無迷。
I today for you say, faith believe forever no lost-way.
莫學馳求者,終日說菩提!』」
Do not learn from outside seek people, whole day says buddha nature!" "
通再啟曰:「四智之義,可得聞乎?」
Monk Zhi Tong again asks: "4 Wisdom meaning, can get hear?"
師曰:「既會三身,便明四智,何更問耶?
Teacher: "when know 3 Bodies, will know 4 Wisdom, why asks again?
若離三身,別談四智,此名有智無身;即此有智,還成無智。」
If away from 3 Bodies, do not talk 4 Wisdom, this is named have wisdom no body; even this have wisdom, still become no wisdom."
復說偈曰:「大圓鏡智性清淨,平等性智心無病,妙觀察智見非功,成所作智同圓鏡。
Again says poem: "big round mirror wisdom nature clean clear, fairness nature wisdom heart no sickness, wonder observe wisdom see not merit, become what make wisdom same as round mirror.
五八六七果因轉,但用名言無實性;若於轉處不留情,繁興永處那伽定。」
Five eight six seven fruit cause turn, but use names no real nature; if on turning places do not leave attachment, crowding forever place Zen-fixed."
通頓悟性智,遂呈偈曰:「三身元我體,四智本心明;身智融無礙,應物任隨形。
Monk Zhi Tong instanteous enlightened nature wisdom, quickly submit poem: "3 Bodies actually is my body, 4 Wisdom original about heart understanding; body wisdom dissolve together no obstacle, apply things according shapes.
起修皆妄動,守住匪真精,妙旨因師曉,終亡染污名。」
Beginning cultivate all illusion acts, guard on not real energy, wonder Teaching because Teacher knows, finally die contaminating names."
僧智常,信州貴谿人,髫年出家,志求見性。
Monk Zhi Chang (Wisdom Always), Province Xin Place Gui Xi person, as child become Monk, vow seek see nature.
一日參禮,師問曰:「汝從何來?欲求何事?」
One day pay respect, Teacher asks: "you from where come? Wish seek what thing?"
曰:「學人近往洪州白峰山禮大通和尚,蒙示見性成佛之義,未決狐疑。
Say: "student me recently live in Province Hong Mountain Bai Feng paying respect Monk Da Tong, grateful get see nature become Buddha meaning, have not clear doubts.
遠來投禮,伏望和尚慈悲指示。」
Far come pay respect, hope Monk Teacher compassionately teaches."
師曰:「彼有何言句?汝試舉看。」
Teacher: "your Teacher has what statements? You try brining see."
曰:「智常到彼,凡經三月,未蒙示誨;為法切故,一夕獨入丈室,請問:「如何是某甲本心本性?」
Say: "Monk Zhi Chang me reach there, been 3 months, never receive teaching; for Teaching eagerly, one night alone enter Temple Principal's room, politely ask: "what is my original heart original nature?" "
大通乃曰:「汝見虛空否?」
Principal Da Tong: "you see emptiness not?"
對曰:「見。」
Answer: "see."
彼曰:「汝見虛空有相貌否?」
He: "you see emptiness have facial appearance not?"
對曰:「虛空無形,有何相貌?」
Answer: "emptiness no appearance, how have facial appearance?"
彼曰:「汝之本性,猶如虛空;了無一物可見是名正見,無一物可知是名真知。
He: "your original nature, is like emptiness; do not have thing to see is named real see, no one thing to know is named real know.
無有青黃長短,但見本源清淨、覺體圓明,即名見性成佛,亦名如來知見。』
No have green yellow long short, but see original source clean clear, enlightened body round bright, is named see nature become Buddha, also named Buddha know see."
學人雖聞此說,猶未決了,乞和尚開示。」
Student me although hears this say, still uncertain, beg Monk Teacher teaches."
師曰:「彼師所說,猶存見知,故令汝未了。
Teacher: "your Teacher what say, still remain some see know, therefore make you unable finish.
我今示汝一偈:『不見一法存無見,大似浮雲遮日面;不知一法守空知,還如太虛生閃電。
I today teach you one poem: "do not see one Teaching remain unable see, big like floating cloud covering sun face; do not know one Teaching guard empty know, still like emptiness born thunder flash.
此之知見瞥然興,錯認何曾解方便;汝當一念自知非,自己靈光常顯現。』」
This know see temporary appear, mistake think of where have solve problem; you must one thought self know mistake, self soul light always appear." "
常聞偈已,心意豁然,乃述偈曰:「無端起知見,著相求菩提;情存一念悟,寧越昔時迷?
Monk Zhi Chang hears poem finished, heart thought suddenly clear, then tells poem: "no reason come up know see, fixed appearance seeking Buddha nature; reason remain one thought enlightened, is able surpass past time lost-way?
自性覺源體,隨照枉遷流;不入祖師室,茫然趣兩頭。」
Self nature know source body, follow shine not need wandering flow; do not enter Zen Master's room, still laying at 2 ends."
智常一日問師曰:「佛說三乘法,又言最上乘,弟子未解,願為教授。」
Monk Zhi Chang one day asks Teacher: "Buddha says 3 Class Teachings, also say most highest Class, student me do not understand, hope you for me teach."
師曰:「汝觀自本心,莫著外法相!
Teacher: "you observe from original heart, do not fixed outside Teaching appearance!
法無四乘,人心自有等差;見聞轉誦是小乘,悟法解義是中乘,依法修行是大乘;萬法盡通,萬法具備,一切不染,離諸法相,一無所得,名最上乘。
Teachings no four class, people heart self have difference; see hear repeat recite is Small Class, enlightened Teaching know meaning is Middle Class, according Teaching cultivate action is Big Class; all Teachings all through, all Teachings all have, all do not contaminate, away all Teaching appearances, do not have a thing, is named Highest Up Class.
乘是行義,不在口爭。
Class is action meaning, not in mouth arguments.
汝須自修,莫問吾也!
You need self cultivate, do not ask me!
一切時中,自性自如。」
All time inside, self nature self like that."
常禮謝,執侍,終師之世。
Monk Zhi Chang courtesy thanks, wait aside, with Teacher whole life.
僧志道,廣州南海人也。
Monk Zhi Dao (Vow Tao), Province Guang Place Nan Hai person.
請益曰:「學人自出家,覽《涅槃經》十載有餘;未明大意,願和尚垂誨。」
Ask assistance says: "student me since becomes Monk, read Void From World Scripture has ten times excess; do not understand big meaning, hope Monk Teacher gives Teachings."
師曰:「汝何處未明?」
Teacher: "you where do not understand?"
曰:「『諸行無常,是生滅法;生滅滅己,寂滅於樂』於此疑惑。」
Says: " "all actions not always, are born disappear Teachings; born disappear disappear self, quiet disappear is happy" for this has doubts."
師曰:「汝作麼生疑?」
Teacher: "you why born doubts?"
曰:「一切眾生皆有二身,謂色身、法身也。
Says: "all common being all have two bodies, are physical body, & Teaching Body.
色身無常,有生有滅;法身有常,無知無覺。
Physical body not always, have born have disappear; Teaching Body is always, no know no feeling.
經曰:『生滅滅己,寂滅於樂』者,不審何身寂滅?何身受樂?
Scripture: "born disappear disappear self, quiet disappear is happy", do not know which body quiet disappear? Which body get happy?
若色身者,色身滅時,四大分散,全然是苦,苦不可言樂。
If is physical body, when physical body disappear, four Big (Fire, Air, Soil, Water) separate, all are sufferings, suffer cannot say happy.
若法身寂滅,即同草木瓦石,誰當受樂?
If Teaching Body quiet disappear, is same as grass wood tile rock, which to get happy?
又法性是生滅之體,五蘊是生滅之用;一體五用,生滅是常;生則從體起用,滅則攝用歸體。
And Teaching Nature is born disappear body, 5 hidden is born disappear of use; one body 5 use, born disappear is always; born is from body become use, disappear is use finished return body.
若聽更生,即有情之類不斷不滅。
If have change born, is then have feelings kind do not cut-off do not disappear.
若不聽更生,則永歸寂滅,同於無情之物;如是,則一切諸法被涅槃之所禁伏,尚不得生,何樂之有?」
If do not have change born, ten forever return quiet disappear, like no feeling things; then, all Teachings get Void from World hold trapped, cannot get born, what happy is there?"
師曰:「汝是釋子,何習外道斷常邪見而議最上乘法?
Teacher: "you are Buddha Disciple, why practice outside Tao (way) cut-off always wicked thought & criticize most Highest Teaching?
據汝所說,即色身外別有法身,離生滅求於寂滅;又推涅槃常樂,言有身受用。
Like what you say, physical body still have Teaching Body, away born disappear to ask for quiet disappear;& reason Void From World always happy, should be have body then use.
斯乃執吝生死,耽著世樂。
You because fixed-on afraid born die, stress on world happiness.
汝今當知!
You today should know!
佛為一切迷人,認五蘊和合為自體相,分別一切法為外塵相;好生惡死,念念遷流,不知夢幻虛假,枉受輪迴;以常樂涅槃,翻為苦相,終日馳求。
Buddha for all lost-way persons, think 5 hidden become self body appearance, differentiate other all Teaching as outside dust appearance; love born hate die, thought thought wander flowing, do not know dream illusion fake, wrongly get reincarnation, for always happy Void from World, translate into suffering appearance, whole day seeking.
佛愍此故,乃示涅槃真樂,剎那無有生相,剎那無有滅相,更無生滅可滅,是則寂滅現前;當現前時,亦無現前之量,乃謂常樂。
Buddha because of this, then direct Void from World as real happy, one moment no have born appearance, one moment no have disappear appearance, & no born disappear to disappear, is then quiet disappear just in front; when just in front time, is then no just in front capacity, is known as always happy.
此樂無有受者,亦無不受者。
This happy do not have bearing person, & do not no bearing person.
豈有一體五用之名?
Where have one body 5 uses of name?
何況更言涅槃禁伏諸法令永不生?
What more say Void from World hold trapped all Teachings make forever cannot born?
斯乃謗佛毀法!
This is then criticize Buddha destroy Teaching!
聽吾偈曰:「無上大涅槃,圓明常寂照。
Hear my poem: "no higher big Void from World, round bright always quiet shine.
凡愚謂之死,外道執為斷。
Common stupid people is known as death, outside Tao (way) people fixed as cut-off.
諸求二乘人,目以為無作。
All ask 2 Class people, all think as no do.
盡属情所計,六十二見本。
All belong feelings influenced, 62 see original.
妄立虛假名,何為真實義?
Falsely setup empty fake name, what is real meaning?
惟有過量人,通達無取捨。
Only have over capacity person, reach through no take give.
以知五蘊法,及以蘊中我;外現眾色像,一一音聲相。
To know 5 hidden Teachings, & with hidden inside me; outside appear all physical appearances, one one sounds appearance.
平等如莫夢幻。
Fair just like no dream illusion.
不起凡聖見,不作涅槃解,二邊三際斷。
Do not arise common & sage thought, do not make Void from World explanation, 2 sides 3 boundaries cut-off.
常應諸根用,而不起用想。
Always apply all roots use, & do not arise use thinking.
分別一切法,不起分別想。
Differentiate all Teachings, do not arise differentiate thinking.
劫火燒海底,風鼔山相擊,真常寂滅樂,涅槃相如是。
Disaster fire burn sea bottom, wind drum mountain appearance hits, real always quiet disappear happy, Void from World is like that.
吾今強言說,令汝捨邪見。
I today strongly say, make you abandon wicked thought.
汝勿隨言解,許汝知少分。」
You don not according words explain, make you know lesser.
志道聞偈大悟,踴躍作禮而退。
Monk Zhi Dao hears poem big enlightened, jump up down make respect & withdraw.
行思禪師,生吉州安城劉氏,聞曹溪法席盛化,徑來參禮,遂問曰:「當何所务,即不落階級?」
Zen Master Xing Si (Action Thinking), born Province Ji City An Surname Liu, hear Place Cao Xi Teaching Meeting opening, road here pay respect, then asks: "do what tasks, then do not fall into classes?"
師曰:「汝曾作甚麼來?」
Teacher: "you past do what come?"
曰:「聖諦亦不為。」
Says: "Sage Knowledge do not become."
師曰:「落何階級?」
Teacher: "fall what class?"
曰:「聖諦尚不為,何階級之有。」
Says: "Sage Knowledge do not become, what class is there."
師深器之,令思首眾。
Teacher heavy respect with, make Zen Master Xing Shi first crowd member.
一日師謂曰:「汝當分化一方,無令斷絕!」
One day Teacher mentions: "you should spread teaches one side, do not make cut off!"
思既得法,遂回吉州青厡山,弘法紹化。
Zen Master Xing Si gets Teaching, immediately return Province Ji Mountain Green Grasslands, spread Teaching set example.
(謚「弘濟禪師」。)
(When die Emperor names "Spread Save Zen Master".)
懷讓禪師,金州杜氏子也;初謁嵩山安國師,安發之曹溪參叩。
Zen Master Huai Rang (Think Giving In), Province Jin Surname Du son, first take Song Shan An Guo Teacher as Teacher, sends by Teacher to Place Cao Xi to pay respect.
讓至,禮拜。
Zen Master Huai Rang comes, pays respect.
師曰:「甚處來?」
Teacher: "where come from?"
曰:「嵩山。」
Says: "Mountain Song."
師曰:「甚麼物恁麼來?」
Teacher: "what thing comes like that?"
曰:「說似一物即不中。」
Says: "say it like one thing then not correct."
師曰:「還可修證否?」
Teacher: "still can cultivate reach not?"
曰:「修證即不無,污染即不得。」
Says: "cultivate reach is not no, contaminate then cannot."
師曰:「只此不污染,諸佛之所護念。
Teacher: "is this cannot contaminate, all Buddhas what to thought protect.
汝既如是,吾亦如是。
You is like that, me also like that.
西天般若多羅讖:『汝足下出一馬駒,踏殺天下人。』
India 26th Zen Master says: "under your feet out one solid horse, step kill under Heaven people."
應在汝心,不須速說!」
Should be in your heart, need not fast say!"
讓豁然契會,遂執侍左右一十五載,日臻玄奧。
Zen Master Huai Rang suddenly understand, immediately wait service left right 15 years, day day gets deeper understand mysterious.
後往南嶽,大閳禪宗。
Later go Place South Yue, big spread Zen Sect.
(謚「大慧禪師」。)
(When die Emperors names "Big Wisdom Zen Master".)
永嘉玄覺禪師,溫州戴氏子,少習經論,精天台止觀法門;因看《維摩經》發明心地。
Place Yong Jia Zen Master Xuan Jue (Wonder Enlightened), Province Wen surname Dai son, young practice Scripture Books, specialize Sect Tian Tai Stop Observation Teaching Method; because see Wei Mo Scripture vow know heart ground.
偶師弟子玄策相訪,與其劇談,出言暗合諸祖。
Then same Teacher disciple Xuan Ce (Wonder Plan) comes visit, with him talk about, out words hiddenly match him with 6th Zen Master.
策云:「仁者得法師誰?」
Zen Master Xuan Ce: "you Ren (humanity) person get Teaching from which Teacher?"
曰:「我聽方等經論,各有師承;後於《維摩經》悟佛心宗,未有證明者。」
Says: "I hear from Scripture theories, all have Teacher sources; later from Wei Mo Scripture understand Buddha heart Sect, do not have person to give proof."
策云:「威音王以前即得,威音王已後,無師自悟,盡是天然外道。」
Zen Master Xuan Ce: "King Wei Yin before is get, King Wei Yin after, no Teacher self enlightened, is all outside Heaven outside Tao (way)."
曰:「願仁者為我證據。」
Says: "hope you Ren (humanity) person for me say proof."
策云:「我言輕。曹溪有六祖大師,四方雲集,并是受法者,若去,則與偕行。」
Zen Master Xuan Ce: "my words are light. Place Cao Xi has 6th Zen Master Big Teacher, 4 sides people gather, & is get Teaching person, if go, I with you along."
覺遂同策來參,繞師三匝,振錫而立。
Zen Master Xuan Jue with Zen Master Xuan Ce together come pay respect, he walks round Teacher 3 times, stamp Staff & stand.
師曰:「夫沙門者,具三千威儀,八萬細行,大德自何方而來,生大我慢?」
Teacher: "you Monk house person, should 3000 respectful appearances, 80 thousands small actions, big virtues you from where come, born self proudness?"
覺曰:「生死事大,無常迅速。」
Zen Master Xuan Jue: "life & death things big, death quick come."
師曰:「何不體取無生,了無速乎?」
Teacher: "why not taste get no born, settle no fast?"
曰:「體即無生,了本無速。」
Say: "taste is no born, settle original no fast."
師曰:「如是!如是!」
Teacher: "it is! It is!"
玄覺方具威儀禮拜,須臾告辭。
Zen Master Xuan Jue then with full respect pay respect, then say good bye.
師曰:「返太速乎?」
Teacher: "return back isn't it too fast?"
曰:「本自非動,豈有速耶?」
Says: "original self not move, where have fast?"
師曰:「誰知非動?」
Teacher: "who know not move?"
曰:「仁者自生分別。」
Says: "you Ren (humanity) person self born differences."
師曰:「汝甚得無生之意。」
Teacher: "you get no born of meaning."
曰:「無生豈有意耶?」
Says: "no born can have meaning?"
師曰:「無意誰當分別?」
Teacher: "no meaning who to tell difference?"
曰:「分別亦非意。」
Says: "difference then not meaning."
師曰:「善哉!少留一宿!」
Teacher: "goodness! At least stay one night!"
時謂一宿覺。
That time known as one night enlightened.
(後著《證道歌》,盛行於世,謚曰:「無相大師」,時稱「真覺」焉。)
(Later write Proof Get Tao (way) Songs, popular at that time, when dies Emperor names "No Appearance Big Teacher", others name "Real Enlightened".)
禪者智隍,初參五祖,自謂已得正受;庵居長坐,積二十年。
Zen Person Zhi Huang, first meet 5th Zen Master, self think already get full Teaching; Temple live long sit, past 20 years.
師弟子玄策,游方至河朔,聞隍之名,造庵問云:「汝在。此作甚麼?」
Teacher's Disciple Xuan Ce, travel to riverside, hears Zen Person Zhi Huang's name, visit Temple & asks: "you here what doing?"
隍曰:「入定。」
Zen Person Zhi Huang: "enter Zen-fixed."
策云:「汝云入定,為有心入耶?
Disciple Xuan Ce: "you say enter Zen-fixed, is have heart enter?
無心入耶?
Or no heart enter?
若無心入者,一切無情草木瓦石,應合得定;若有心入者,一切有情含識之流,亦應得定。」
If no heart enters, all no feeling grass tree tile rock, should same get Zen-fixed; if have heart enters, all have feeling containing conscious kinds, should same get Zen-fixed.
隍曰:「我正入定時,不見有『有無』之心。」
Zen Person Zhi Huang: "when I right enter Zen-fixed, do not see "have have-not" of heart."
策云:「不見有『有無』之心,即是常定,何有出入?
Disciple Xuan Ce: "do not see "have have-not" of heart, is common Zen-fixed, where have out & in?
若有出入,即非大定。」
If have out & in, is then not big Zen-fixed."
隍無對,良久,問曰:「師嗣誰耶?」
Zen Person Zhi Huang no answer, very long, asks: "your Teacher who?"
策云:「我師曹溪六祖。」
Disciple Xuan Ce: "my Teacher is Place Cao Xi's 6th Zen Master."
隍云:「六祖以何為禪定?」
Zen Person Zhi Huang: "6th Zen Master use what as Zen-fixed?"
策云:「我師所說:妙湛圓寂,體用如如。
Disciple Xuan Ce: "my Teacher what say: wonderful complete quietness, body use just like that.
五陰本空,六塵非有;不出不入,不定不亂。
5 yin originally empty, 6 dusts do not exist; do not out don not enter, do not Zen-fixed do not chaos.
禪性無住,離『住禪寂』;禪性無生,離『生禪想』;心如虛空,亦無虛空之量。」
Zen nature do not fix, away from "fix Zen quiet-dead"; Zen nature no born, away from "born Zen thinking"; heart like voidness empty, & no voidness empty of capacity."
隍聞是說,徑來謁師。
Zen Person Zhi Huang hears what says, travel come talk to Teacher.
師問云:「仁者何來?」
Teacher asks: "Ren (humanity) Person where come?"
隍具述前緣。
Zen Person Zhi Huang tells previous encounter.
師云:「誠如所言。
Teacher: "sincere just what is said.
汝但心如虛空,不著空見;應用無礙,動靜無心;凡聖情忘,能所俱泯;性相如如,無不定時也。」
You but heart like voidness empty, do not fix empty thought; apply use no obstacle, move still no heart; common sage feeling forget, able all disappear, nature appearance like that, everytime is Zen-fixed."
隍於是大悟,二十年「所得心」,都無影響。
Zen Person Zhi Huang big enlightenment, 20 years what get heart, all no change.
(其夜河北士庶聞空中有聲云:「隍禪師今日得道!」)
(The River Ye North citizens hears from sky has voice: "Zen Master Zhi Huang today gets Tao (way)!)
隍後禮辭,復歸河北,開化四眾。
Zen Master Zhi Huang later goodbye, return back River North, teach open people.
一僧問師云:「黃梅意旨,甚麼人得?」
One Monk asks Teacher: "5th Zen Master's instruction, who get?"
師云:「會佛法人得。」
Teacher: "know Buddha Teachings person gets."
僧云:「和尚還得乎?」
Monk: "Monk Teacher you still get?"
師云:「我不會佛法。」
Teacher: "I do not know Buddha Teachings."
師,一日欲濯所授之衣而無美泉,因至寺後五里許,見山林鬱茂,瑞氣盤旋,師振錫卓地,泉應手而出,積以為池,乃膝跪浣衣石上。
Teacher, one day want wash what get of Clothing treasure but no beautiful spring water, therefore go Temple back 5 miles, see mountain tree thick, respectful air rounding, Teacher hit staff on ground, spring water comes hand out, become pool, then kneel wash Clothing Treasure on rock.
忽有一僧來禮拜,云:「方辯,是西蜀人。
Suddenly have one Monk comes pay respect, says: "I am Monk Fang Bian, is west India person.
(昨於南天竺國見達摩大師,囑方辯:「速往東土!吾傳大迦葉正法眼藏及僧伽梨,見傳六代,於韶州曹溪,汝去瞻禮!」)
(Yesterday at South Heaven Zhu Country see Big Teacher Da Mo, instructs me Monk Fang Bian: "quick go Eastern Land! I transfer teach Disciple Da Jia Ye Correct Teaching Eye Hidden & Clothing Treasure, see transfer teach 6th Generation, at Province Shao Place Cao Xi, you go pay respect!")
方辯遠來,願見我師傳來衣缽。」
Monk Fang Bian me far come, wish see my Teacher transfer teach Clothing Treasure."
師乃出示,次問:「上人攻何事業?」
Teacher displays Clothing Treasure, then asks: "you specializes what thing?"
曰:「善塑。」
Say: "good at statue making."
師正色曰:「汝試塑看。」
Teacher strict facial says: "you try make a statue see."
辯罔措。
Monk Fang Bian does not know what do.
過數日,塑就真相,可高七寸,曲盡其妙。」
After few days, statue become real appearance, have height 7 inches, look wonderful."
師笑曰:「汝只解塑性,不解佛性。」
Teacher laughs says : "you only know statue nature, do not know Buddha nature."
師舒手摩方辯頂,曰:「永為人天福田!」
Teacher put hand on Monk Fang Bian's head, says: "forever as Heaven Person happiness!"
師仍以衣酬之。
Teacher then use Clothing Treasure gift with.
辯取衣分為三:一披塑像,一自留,一用椶裹瘗地中。
Monk Fang Bian gets Clothing treasure divide into 3: one covers statue, one self keep, one use tree bark cover pack in ground.
誓曰:「後得此衣,乃吾出世住持於此,重建殿宇。」
Vow says: "later Person who get this Clothing Treasure, is after you died become Abbot here, rebuilding the Temple."
有僧舉臥輪禪師偈云:「臥輪有伎倆,能斷百思想;對境心不起,菩提日日長。」
One Monk use Zen Master Wo Lun poem says: "Zen Master Wo Lun has skill, able cut off hundred thinking; face environment heart do not up, Buddha nature day day grow."
師聞之,曰:「此偈未明心地。
Teacher hears, says: "this poem have not understand heart ground.
若依而行之,是加繫縛。」
If according action, is add tie-up."
因示一偈曰:「惠能沒伎倆,不斷百思想;對境心數起,菩提作麼長?」
Therefore teach one poem: "6th Zen Master Hui Neng no skill, do not cut off hundred thinking; face environment heart many up, Buddha nature how to grow?"
時祖師居曹溪寶林,神秀大師在荊南玉泉寺;於時兩宗盛化,人皆稱南能北秀,故有南北二宗頓漸之分。
Then 6th Zen Master lives in Place Cao Xi Bao Lin, Big Teacher Shen Xiu at Place Jing Nan Yu Quan Temple, then 2 sects spread, people all say south Neng north Xiu, therefore have south north 2 sects instanteous & gradual difference.
而學者莫知宗趣。
& learning disciples do not know Sect fun.
師謂眾曰:「法本一宗,人有南北;法即一種,見有遲疾。
Teacher tells crowd: "Teaching original one Sect, people have south north; Teaching but one kind, thinking have slow fast.
何名頓漸?
What are named instanteous & gradual?
法無頓漸,人有利鈍,故名頓漸。」
Teaching no instanteous & gradual, people have sharp & blunt, therefore named instanteous & gradual."
然秀之徒眾,往往譏南宗祖師:「不識一字,有何所長?」
But Big Teacher Shen Xiu's disciples crowd, always make fun south Sect 6th Zen Master: "do not know a word, have what knowledge?"
秀曰:「他得無師之智,深悟上乘,吾不如也。
Big Master Shen Xiu: "He gets no Teacher of wisdom, deep know Upper Sect, I not as good.
且吾師五祖,親傳衣法,豈徒然哉?
Moreover my Teacher 5th Zen Master, personally transfer give Clothing Teaching, can say no use?
吾恨不能遠去親近,虛受國恩。
I hate not able far go close, empty get country treatment.
汝等諸人毋滯於此!
You etc all people do not stop here!
可往曹溪參決!」
Can go Place Cao Xi question ask!"
一日,命門人志誠曰:「汝聰明多智,可為吾到曹溪聽法;若有所聞,盡心記取,還為吾說。」
One day, instructs Disciple Zhi Cheng: "you smart many wisdom, can for me go Place Cao Xi hears Teaching; if have what hear, try best heart remember get, return for me say."
志誠稟命至曹溪,隨眾參請,不言來處。
Disciple Zhi Cheng gets instruction go Place Cao Xi, with crowd pay respect, do not speak from where.
時祖師告眾曰:「今有盜法之人,潛在此會。」
Time 6th Zen Master tells crowd: "today has steal Teaching of person, hide inside this meeting."
志誠即出禮拜,具陳其事。
Disciple Zhi Cheng immediately come out pay respect, tell the issue.
師曰:「汝從玉泉來,應是細作。」
Teacher: "you from Place Yu Quan come, should be doing spy thing."
對曰:「不是。」
Answer: "no."
師曰:「何得不是?」
Teacher: "when become no?"
對曰:「未說即是,說了不是。」
Answer: "before say is yes, say already is no."
師曰:「汝師若為示眾?」
Teacher: "your teacher how teach crowd?"
對曰:「常指誨大眾,住心觀淨,長坐不臥。」
Answer: "always instructs crowd, fix heart see clean, long sit not sleep."
師曰:「住心觀淨,是病非禪。
Teacher: "fix heart see clean, is sickness not Zen.
長坐拘身,於理何益?」
Long sit restricts body, according truth what use?"
聽吾偈曰:『生來坐不臥,死去臥不坐;一具臭骨頭,何為立功課?』
Listen my poem: "born come sit not sleep, die go sleep not sit; one stingy bones, where have make homework?"
志誠再拜曰:「弟子在秀大師處,學道九年,不得契悟;今聞和尚一說,便契本心。
Disciple Zhi Cheng again pays respect: "Disciple me at Big Teacher Xiu's place, learn Tao (way) 9 years, unable get understanding; today hear Monk Teacher one say, then understand original heart.
弟子生死事大,和尚大慈,更為教示。」
Disciple me born & death thing big, Monk Teacher please compassionate, further teach."
師曰:「吾聞汝師教示人戒定慧法,未審汝師說戒定慧行相如何?
Teacher: "I hear your Teacher teach Must-Not Zen-Fixed Wisdom Teaching, have not examine your Teacher Must-Not Zen-Fixed Wisdom appearance how?
與吾說看!」
With me say see!"
誠曰:「秀大師說:『諸惡莫作名為戒,諸善奉行名為慧,自淨其意名為定。』
Disciple Zhi Cheng: "Big Teacher Xiu says: "all evil do not do is named Must-Not, all good follow do is named Wisdom, self clean the thought is named Zen-Fixed."
彼說如此。
He say like that.
未審和尚以何法誨人?」
Have not examine Monk Teacher use what Teaching teaches people?"
師曰:「吾言有法與人,即為誑汝;但隨方解縛,假名三昧。
Teacher: "I say have Teaching for you, is lying you; but according you remove typing, is fake name Three Mei.
如汝師所說戒定慧,實不可思議也。
According your Teacher what say Must-Not Zen-Fixed Wisdom, actually is cannot think imagine.
吾所見戒定慧又別。」
I what see Must-Not Zen-Fixed Wisdom but different."
志誠曰:「戒定慧只合一種,如何更別?」
Disciple Zhi Cheng: "Must-Not Zen-Fixed Wisdom is combined one type, how can different?"
師曰:「汝師戒定慧接大乘人,吾戒定慧接最上乘人;悟解不同,見有遲疾。
Teacher: "your Teacher Must-Not Zen-Fixed Wisdom receive by big Sect people, my Must-Not Zen-Fixed Wisdom more highest big Sect people; understanding explanation different, seeing have late & fast.
汝聽吾說!與彼同否?
You hear me say! With him different not?
吾所說法,不離自性;離體說法,名為『相』說,自性常迷。
I what say Teaching, do not away self nature; away body say Teaching, is named "appearance" saying, self nature always lost-way.
須知一切萬法皆從自性起用,是真戒定慧法。
Should know all Teachings all from self nature come use, is real Must-Not Zen-Fixed Wisdom Teaching.
聽吾偈曰:『心地無非自性戒,心地無癡自性慧,心地無亂自性定;不增不減自金剛,身去身來本三昧。』」
Hear my poem: "heart ground no wrong self nature Must-Not, heart ground no infatuation self nature Wisdom, heart ground no chaos self nature Zen-Fixed; no increase no decrease self golden hard, body go body come original Three Mei." "
誠聞偈,悔謝,乃呈一偈曰:
「五蘊幻身,幻何究竟?
5 things illusion body, illusion is where?
迴趣真如,法還不淨!」
Return fun to real Buddha nature, Teaching still not clean!"
師然之。
Teacher says yes.
復語誠曰:「汝師戒定慧,勸小根智人;吾戒定慧,勸大根智人。
Repeat tell Disciple Zhi Cheng: "your Teacher Must-Not Zen-Fixed Wisdom, encourage small root people; my Must-Not Zen-Fixed Wisdom, encourage big root People.
若悟自性,亦不立菩提涅槃,亦不立解脫知見;無一法可得,方能建立萬法。
If understand self nature, then no setup Buddha nature void disappear, also no setup release know see; no one Teaching can get, then can build setup all Teachings.
若解此意,亦名佛身,亦名菩提涅槃,亦名解脫知見。
If understand this meaning, then named Buddha body, then named Buddha nature void disappear, then named release know see.
見性之人,立亦得,不立亦得。
See nature Person, setup is get, no setup is get.
去來自由,無滯無礙,應用隨作,應語隨答,普見化身,不離自性,即得『自在神通,游戲三昧』;是名見性。」
Go come freely, no stop no obstacle, apply use according, reply words according answer, all see change body, not leave self nature, then get "freely special powers, play game Three Mei"; is named see nature."
志誠再啟師曰:「如何是不立義?」
Disciple Zhi Cheng again tells Teacher: "what is not setup meaning?"
師曰:「自性無非、無癡、無亂,念念般若觀照,常離法相,自由自在。
Teacher: "self nature no wrong, no infatuation, no chaos, thought thought Buddha nature observe shine, always away Teaching appearance, freedom freely.
縱橫盡得,有何可立?
Do everything all get, what can setup?
自性自悟,頓悟頓修,亦無漸次,所以不立一切法。
Self nature self enlightened, instanteous enlightenment instanteous cultivation, with no phase stages, therefore no setup all Teachings.
諸法寂滅,有何次第?」
All Teachings quiet disappear, how have phase stages?"
志誠禮拜,願為執侍,朝夕不懈。
Disciple Zhi Cheng pays respect, wish as beside servant, morning evening non-stop.
僧志徹,江西人,本姓張,名行昌;少任俠。
Monk Zhi Che, Province Jiang Xi person, original surname Zhang, name Xing Chang; young time been as swordsman.
自南北分化,二宗主雖亡彼我,而徒侶競起愛憎。
Since South & North Sect divide, two Sect Masters although stop you & me, but the disciples compete arise love & hate.
時,北宗門人,自立秀師為第六祖,而忌祖師傳衣為天下聞,乃囑行昌來刺師。
Then, north sect disciples, since establish Master Xiu as 6th zen master, but jealous 6th Zen Master get Clothing Treasure for under Heaven know, then instruct Monk Zhi Che to kill Teacher.
師心通,預知其事,即置金十兩於座間。
Teacher heart through, foretell this thing, then place gold 10 grams on seat place.
時夜暮,行昌入祖室,將欲加害,師舒頸就之,行昌揮刃者三,悉無所損。
When night time, Person Xing Chang enter 6th Zen Master's room, want to add harm, Teacher expose neck to cut, Person Xing Chang cut knife 3 times, all no damage.
師曰:「正劍不邪,邪劍不正;只負汝金,不負汝命。」
Teacher: "upright sword not wicked, wicked sword not upright; only award you gold, do not award you mission."
行昌驚仆,久而方蘇,求哀悔過,即願出家。
Person Xing Chang scare faint, long time then wake, beg sadly repent, wish to become Monk.
師遂與金,言:「汝且去!恐徒眾翻害於汝。
Teacher quickly give gold, says: "you now go! Afraid Disciples crowd do harm on you.
汝可他日易形而來,吾當攝受。」
You can other day change appearance come, I will receive you."
行昌稟旨宵遁;後投僧出家,具戒精進。
Person Xing Chang receives instruction night disappear, later go Monk become Monk, have Must-Not with great improvements.
一日,憶師之言,遠來禮覲。
One day, remember Teacher of words, far come pay respect receive.
師曰:「吾久念汝,汝來何晚?」
Teacher: "I long think of you, you why so late?"
曰:「昨蒙和尚捨罪,今雖出家苦行,終難報德。
Say: "last time because Monk Teacher forgive sins, today although become Monk suffering cultivation, still difficult repay gratitude.
其惟傳法度生乎?
Only get Teaching from you save common beings able repay?
弟子常覽《涅槃經》未曉『常』、『無常』義,乞和尚慈悲,略為解說。」
Disciple me always read "Void Disappear Scripture" do not know "Always", "No Always" meaning, beg Monk Teacher compassionate, summarize for me explain say."
師曰:「無常者,即佛性也;有常者,即一切善惡諸法分別心也。」
Teacher: "No Always, is Buddha nature; Have Always, is all good & evil all Teachings differentiate heart."
曰:「和尚所說,大違經文。」
Say: "Monk Teacher what say, big against Scripture wordings."
師曰:「吾傳佛心印,安敢違於佛經?」
Teacher: "I get Buddha Heart Print, where dare against Buddhist Scriptures?"
曰:「經說佛性是常,和尚卻言無常;善惡諸法乃至菩提心,皆是無常,和尚卻言是常;此即相違,令學人轉加疑惑。」
Say: "Scripture says Buddha nature is Always, Monk Teacher but say Not Always; good & evil all Teachings are to Buddha nature heart, all are Not Always, Monk Teacher but say Always; these are together against, make learning me turn add suspicion doubts."
師曰:「《涅槃經》,吾昔聽尼無盡藏讀一遍,便為講說,無一字一義不合經文。
Teacher: "Void Disappear Scripture, I last time hear Nun Wu Jin Zang read one time, then for you say, no one word one meaning do not match Scripture wordings.
乃至為汝,終無二說。」
Then to for you, finally no two saying."
曰:「學人識量淺昧,願和尚委曲開示。」
Say: "learning me knowledge capacity shallow & cloudy, wish Monk Teacher under burden teach."
師曰:「汝知否?
Teacher: "you know not?
佛性若常,更說甚麼善惡諸法?
Buddha nature if Always, what further say what good & evil All Teachings?
乃至窮劫無有一人發菩提心者?
Then to infinite disasters no have one person vow Buddha nature heart?
故吾說無常,正是佛說真常之道也。
Therefore I say No Always, right is Buddha say real always of Tao (way).
又,一切諸法若無常者,即物物皆有自性,容受生死,而真常性有不徧之處;故吾說常者,正是佛說真無常。
And, all Teachings if Not Always, then things things all have self nature, easily get born & death, and real always nature have not side-line of place; therefore I say Always, right is Buddha say Real No Always.
佛比為凡夫外道執於邪常,諸二乘人於常計無常,共成八倒,故於涅槃了義教中,破彼徧見,而顯說真常、真我、真淨。
Buddha for common people outside Tao (way) fixed on wicked always, all Second Sect people for always think No Always, all become eight down, therefore in Disappear Void Scripture finish meaning Teaching inside, break their side-line thoughts, & appear say Real Always, Real Me, Real Clean.」
汝今依言背義,以斷滅無常及確定死常,而錯解佛之圓妙最後微言;縱覽千徧,有何所益?」
You today according words against meaning, for cut-off disappear No Always & establish die Always, therefore wrong explain Buddha of complete wonder last wonder words; even read thousand times, what use?"
行昌忽然大悟,說偈曰:「因守無常心,佛說有常性;不知方便者,猶春池拾礫。
Monk Xing Chang suddenly big enlightened, says poem: "because guard No Always heart, Buddha says have Always nature; do not know convenience persons, like spring pond pick rocks.
我今不施功,佛性而現前;非師相授與,我亦無所得。」
I today not give merits, Buddha nature then appear in front, not Teacher for me teach with, I no what get."
師曰:「汝今徹也,宜名志徹。」
Teacher: "you today known, should name Zhi Che (Vow Known)."
徹禮謝而退。
Monk Zhi Che respects thanks & withdraws.
有一童子,名神會,襄陽高氏子;年十三,自玉泉來參禮。
Have one kid, named Shen Hui, Person Xiang Yang Gao surname's son; age thirteen, from Place Yu Quan comes pay respect.
師曰:「知識!遠來艱幸!
Teacher: "knowledge person! Far come difficult!
還將得『本』來否?
Still bring get 'Original' come not?
若有本則合識主,試說看!」
If have Original then same conscious master, try say see!"
會曰:「以無往為本,見即是主。」
Small Monk Shen Hui: "for no go as Original, see is then master."
師曰:「這沙彌爭合取次語?」
Teacher: "you small Monk is able give this words?"
會乃問曰:「和尚坐禪,還見不見?」
Small Monk Shen Hui then asks: "Monk Teacher sits Zen, still see not see?"
師以拄杖打三下,云:「吾打汝是痛不痛?」
Teacher uses staff hits three times, says: "I hit you is pain not pain?"
對曰:「亦痛亦不痛。」
Answers: "is pain & not pain."
師曰: 「吾亦見亦不見。」
Teacher: "I see & not see."
神會問:「如何是亦見亦不見?」
Small Monk Shen Hui asks: "how is see & not see?"
師云:「吾之所見,常見自心過愆,不見他人是非好惡,是以亦見亦不見。
Teacher: "I of what see, always see self heart mistakes, do not see other people troubles good & bad, is therefore see & not see.
汝言亦痛亦不痛如何?
You say is pain & is not pain how?
汝若不痛,同其木石;若痛,則同凡夫,即起恚恨。
You if no pain, same as wood & rock; if pain, then same as common being, able rise hatred.
汝向前見不見是二遍,痛不痛是生死滅;汝自性且不見,敢爾弄人?」
You previously ask see not see is two seeing, pain & not pain is born & death disappear; your self nature still not see, dare make fun people?"
神會禮拜悔謝。
Small Monk Shen Hui pays respect repent thanking.
師又曰:「汝若心迷不見,問善知識覓路;汝若心悟,即自見性,依法修行。
Teacher again says: "you if heart lost-way not see, ask good knowledge people look road; you if heart enlightened, is then self see nature, according Teacher cultivate action.
汝自迷不見自心,卻來問吾見與不見。
you self lost-way do not see self heart, but come ask me see or not see.
吾見自知,豈代汝迷?
I see self know, where replace your lost-way?
汝若自見,亦不代吾迷!
You if self see, then do not replace my lost-way!
何不自知自見,乃問吾見與不見?」
Why not self know self see, instead ask me see or not see?"
神會再禮百餘拜,求謝過愆,服勤給侍,不離左右。
Small Monk Shen Hui again pays respect hundred excess times, beg away mistakes, serve as waiting, not leave left & right.
一日,師告眾曰:「吾有一物,無頭無尾,無名無字,無背無面,諸人還識否?」
One day, Teacher tells crowd: "I have one thing, no head no tail, no name no word, no back no face, everyone still know not?"
神會出曰:「是諸佛之本源,神會之佛性。」
Small Monk Shen Hui answers: "is all Buddhas of original source, me Small monk Shen Hui of Buddha nature."
師曰:「向汝道無名無字,汝便喚作本源佛性。
Teacher: "to you say no name no word, you then say become original source buddha nature.
汝向去有把茆蓋頭,也只成個知解宗徒。」
You always have a headcover covering your head, can only become a know explanation Sect Disciple."
(祖師滅後,會入京洛,大宏曹溪頓教,著《顯宗記》盛行於世,是為「荷澤禪師」。)
(6th Zen Master dies disappear later, Monk Shen Hui enter Capital Luo, big spread Place Cao Xi's instanteous Teaching, write 'Reveal Sect Book' popular spread to world, is named 'Lotus Swamp Zen Master'.)
師見諸宗難問,咸起惡心,多集座下,愍而謂曰:「學道之人,一切善念惡念,應當除盡。
Teacher see all sects difficult ask, arise evil heart, many gather under Seat, pity says: "learn Tao (way) of people, all good thoughts bad thoughts, should under get rid.
無名可名,名於「自性」;無二之性,是名「實性」。
No name can name, name from 'Self Nature', no two of nature, is named 'Real Nature'.
於實性上建立一切教門,言下便須自見!」
From real nature on top build setup all Teaching Methods, words under then surely self see!"
諸人聞說,總皆作禮,請事為師。
All people hear say, finally all make respect, ask things as Teacher.
神龍元年上元日,則天中宗詔云:「朕請安、秀二師,宮中供養;萬幾之暇。
Year Shen Long Yuan Day Shang Yuan, Empress Wu Ze Tian & Emperor Zhong Zong issue decree: "emperor me invite Zen Master An & Zen Master Shen Xiu two Teachers to court for donation food rearing; in very busy time find time.
每究一乘。
Every minute study One Sect Buddhism.
二師推讓云:『南方有能禪師,密授忍大師衣法,傳佛心印,可請彼問。』
Two Teachers politely reject: "in south has 6th Zen Master Hui Neng, secretly receive Big Teacher Ren's Clothing Teaching, receive Buddha heart print, can invite him ask."
今遣內侍薛簡,馳詔請迎。
Today send inner servant Xue Jian, quickly issue decree to invite.
願師慈念,速赴上京。」
Wish Teacher compassionate thought, fast come to Capital."
師上表辭疾,願終林麓。
Teacher up petition rejecting, wish whole life ends Place Lin Lu.
薛簡曰:「京城禪德皆云:『欲得會道.必須坐禪習定,若不因禪定而得解脫者,未之有也。』
Inner Servant Xue Jian: "Capital city all Zen masters say: "wish to meet Tao (way), need to sit Zen practice Zen-fixed, if not because Zen-fixed & get release persons, never have before."
未審師所說法如何?」
Have not hear Teacher what say Teaching how?"
師曰:「道由心悟,豈在坐也?
Teacher: "Tao (way) from heart understands, how from sitting?
經云:『若言如來若坐若臥,是行邪道。』
Scripture says: "if say Buddha like sit like sleep, is action wicked tao (way)."
何故?
Why?
無所從來,亦無所去,無生無滅是如來清淨禪,諸法空寂是如來清淨坐。
No from where come, & no where go, no born no disappear is Buddha clean Zen, all Teachings empty die is Buddha clean Sit.
究竟無證,豈況坐耶?」
Finally no reach, least say sitting?"
簡曰:「弟子回京,主上必問;願師慈悲,指示心要,傳奏兩宮,及京城學道者;譬如一燈,然百千燈,冥者皆明,明明無盡。」
Inner Servant Xue Jian: "Disciple me return Capital, Emperor definitely asks; wish Teacher compassionate, teach heart summary, return message two palace, & Capital learn Tao (way) people; like one lamp, light hundred thousand lamps, dark people become bright, brightness no end."
師云:「道無明暗,明暗是代謝之義。
Teacher: "Tao (way) no bright or dark, bright & dark are two different of meaning.
明明無盡,亦是有盡,相待立名。
Brightness no end, still have end, opposite side setup name.
故《淨名經》云:『法無有比,無相待故。』」
Therefore Clean Name Scripture says: "Teachings nothing can compare, because no opposite sides." "
簡曰:「明喻智慧,暗喻煩惱;修道之人,倘不以智慧照破煩惱,無始生死憑何出離?」
Inner Servant Xue Jian: "bright is wisdom, dark is heart troubles; cultivation persons, if do not use wisdom shine break heart troubles, endless born & death base what out leave?"
師曰:「煩惱即是菩提,無二無別。
Teacher: "heart troubles are Buddha nature, no two no difference.
若以智慧破煩惱者,此是二乘見解,羊鹿等機。
If use wisdom break heart troubles person, this is Second Sect understanding, goat & deer classification.
上智大根,悉不如是。」
Upper wise & Big Root, all not like that."
簡曰:「如何是大乘見解?」
Inner Servant Xue Jian: "what is Big Sect understanding?"
師曰:「明與無明,凡夫見二;智者了達其性無二。
Teacher: "bright or no bright, common people see two; wise people already reach the nature no two.
無二之性,即是實性。
No two of nature, is real nature.
實性者;處凡愚而不減,在賢聖而不增;住煩惱而不亂,居禪定而不寂;不斷不常,不來不去,不在中間及其內外。
Real nature person; place in common stupid not decrease, in Sub-Sage & Sage not increase; place in heart troubles not chaos, rest in Zen-fixed & not die off; no stop no always, no come no go, not in middle & the inside & outside.
不生不滅,性相如如,常住不遷,名之曰:『道』。」
Not born not disappear, nature appearance like that, always there not move, is named 'Tao (way)'."
簡曰:「師說不生不滅,何異外道?」
Inner Servant Xue Jian: "Teacher says no born no disappear, what difference from outside Tao (way) people?"
師曰:「外道所說不生不滅者,將滅止生,以生顯滅;滅猶不滅,生說不生。
Teacher: "outside Tao (way) people what say no born no disappear, to disappear stop born, use born reveal disappear; disappear say no disappear, born say no born.
我說不生不滅者,本自無生,今亦不滅,所以不同外道。
I say no born no disappear, original self no born, today then no disappear, therefore different from outside Tao (way).
汝若欲知心要,但一切善惡都莫思量,自然得入清淨心體,湛然常寂,妙用恒沙。」
You if wish know heart summary, but all good & bad not think of, naturally get enter clean clear heart body, completely always quiet die, wonder use like River Heng sands."
簡蒙指教,豁然大悟,禮辭歸闕,表奏師語。
Inner Servant Xue Jian taken Teachings, very big enlightened, rite away return Capital, tell Emperor what Teacher says.
其年九月三日,有詔奖諭師曰:「師辭老疾,為朕修道,國之福田!
That year nine month 3rd day, have decree praising Teacher: "Teacher excuse old sick, for me Emperor cultivate Tao (way), Country of happiness!
師若淨名,託疾毗耶,闡揚大乘,傳諸佛心,談不二法。
Teacher like Buddha's Disciple, say have illness stay at Place Pi Ye, spread Big Sect, transfer teach Buddha heart, say no two Teachings.
薛簡傳師指授如來知見;朕積善餘慶,宿種善根,值師出世,頓悟上乘。
Inner Servant Xue Jian transfer teach Teacher's instruction of Buddha know see; Emperor me build good excess celebrations, past life build good roots, wait Teacher born world, instanteous understand Upper Sect.
感荷師恩,頂戴無已!」
Thank you Teacher gratitude, receive too much!"
並奉磨衲袈裟及水晶鉢,敕韶州刺尸修飾寺宇,賜師舊居為國恩寺焉。
And give Mo Na Clothing & water crystal Food Bowl, decree Province Shao governor to rebuild the Temple, award name Teacher old home as Country Gratitude Temple.
師一日喚門人法海、志誠、法達、神會、智常、智通、志徹、志道、法珍、法如等曰:「汝等不同餘人,吾滅度後,各為一方師。
Teacher one day calls Disciples Fa Hai, Zhi Cheng, Fa Da, Shen Hui, Zhi Chang, Zhi Tong, Zhi Che, Zhi Dao, Fa Zhen, Fa Ru etc says: "you etc different excess people, I die disappear save later, each become one place Teacher.
吾今教汝說法,不失本宗。
I today teach you give Teaching, not lose original Sect.
先須舉三科法門,動用三十六對,出沒即離兩邊,說一切法莫離自性!
First need come up 3 Subjects Teaching Methods, use 36 pairs, appearing away 2 sides, say all Teachings do not leave self nature!
忽有人問汝法,出語盡雙,皆取對法,來去相因,究竟二法盡除,更無去處。
Suddenly have person asks you Teaching, out words all double, all get correct Teachings, come go together cause, finally two teachings all clear, & no go place.
三科法門者,『陰、界、入』也。
3 Subjects Teaching Methods, are 'Yin, Dimension, Enter'.
陰是五陰,『色、受、想、行、識』是也。
Yin are 5 Yins, are 'Appearance, Feeling, Thinking, Action, Consciousness'.
入是十二入,外六塵,『色、聲、香、味、觸、法』,內六門,『眼、耳、鼻、舌、身、意』是也。
Enter are 12 Enters, outside 6 Dusts, 'Appearance, Sound, Smell, Taste, Touch, Teaching', inside 6 Doors, are 'Eyes, Ears, Nose, Tongue, Body, Thoughts'.
界是十八界,『六塵、六門、六識』是也。
Dimensions are 18 Dimensions, are '6 Dusts, 6 Doors, 6 Consciousness'.
自性能含萬法,名含藏識。
Self nature able contain all Teachings, is named Contain Hidden Consciousness.
若起思量,即是轉識。
If arise thinking capacity, is then turning consciousness.
生六識,出六門,見六塵。
Born 6 Consciousness, out 6 Doors, see 6 Dusts.
如是一十八界,皆從自性起『用』。
It is the 18 Dimensions, all from self nature out 'use'.
自性若邪,起十八邪;自性若正,起十八正。
Self nature if wicked, arise 18 wicked; self nature if upright, arise 18 upright.
若『惡用』即『眾生用』,『善用』即『佛用』。
If 'evil use' is then 'common beings use', 'good use' is then 'Buddha use'.
『用』由何等?由自性有。
'Use' from where etc? From self nature has.
對法,外境。
Pair Teachings, outside environment.
無情五對:天與地對,日與月對,明與暗對,陰與陽對,水與火對,此是五對也。
No emotion 5 Pairs: Heaven & Earth Pair, sun & moon Pair, bright & darkness Pair, Yin & Yang Pair, water & fire pair, these are 5 Pairs.
法相語言十二對:語與法對,有與無對,有色與無色對,有相與無相對,有漏與無漏對,色與空對,動與靜對,清與濁對,凡與聖對,僧與俗對,老與少對,大與小對,此是十二對也。
Teachings Appearance language words 12 Pairs: language & Teaching Pair, have & no have Pair, have appearance & no appearance Pair, have leakage & no leakage Pair, appearance & emptiness Pair, move & quiet Pair, clean & dirty Pair, common & Sage Pair, Monk & non-Monk Pair, old & young Pair, big & small Pair, these are 12 Pairs.
自性起十九對:長與短對,邪與正對,癡與慧對,愚與智對,亂與定對,慈與毒對,戒與非對,直與曲對,實與虛對,險與平對,煩惱與菩提對,常與無常對,悲與害對,喜與嗔對,捨與慳對,進與退對,生與滅對,法身與色身對,化身與報身對,此是十九對也。」
Self nature arises 19 Pairs: long & short Pair, wicked & upright Pair, infatuation & wisdom Pair, stupid & wise :Pair, chaos & fixed Pair, compassion & poison Pair, Must-Not & wrongs Pair, straight & crooked Pair, real & fake Pair, dangerous & safe Pair, heart troubles & Buddha solutions Pair, always & not always Pair, compassionate & hurting Pair, happy & angry Pair, giving & stingy Pair, advance & withdraw Pair, born & disappear Pair, Teaching Body & appearance body Pair, change body & effect body Pair, these are 19 Pairs.
師言:「此是三十六對法,若解用,即通貫一切經法,出入即離兩邊。
Teacher says: "these are 36 Pairs Teachings, if explain use, then through use all Scripture Teachings, out in then away two sides.
自性動用,共人言語,外於相離相,內於空離空。
Self nature moves use, with people say language, outside appearance away appearance, inside emptiness away emptiness.
若全著相,即長邪見;若全執空,即長無明。
If all fixed on appearances, then grow wicked see; if all stress on emptiness, then grow no brightness.
執空之人,有謗經,直言『不用文字』。
Stress emptiness person, have criticize-destroy Scriptures, straight talk 'Not Use Words'.
既云不用文字,人亦不合語言,只此語言便是文字之相。
Again say not use words, people then not match words, only these language is then words of appearance.
又云『直道不立文字』。
Again say 'Straight Tao (way) Not Setup Words'.
既此『不立』兩字,亦是文字。
This 'Not Setup' two words, are still words.
見人所說,便即謗他言著文字。
See people what say, then criticize-destroy his sayings stress on words.
汝等須知!
You etc should know!
自迷猶可,又謗佛經。
Self lost-way can already, in addition criticize-destroy Buddhist Scriptures.
不要謗經!
Do not criticize-destroy Scriptures!
罪障無數!
Sins obstacles many!
若著相於外,而作法求真,或廣立道場,說有無之過患;如是之人,累劫不可見性。
If stress appearance to outside, & make Teachings seek truth, or broadly setup Tao (way) places, say have not of mistakes; these kind of people, many disasters cannot see nature.
當聽依法修行,又莫百物不思而於道性窒礙!
Should hear according Teachings cultivate action, in addition hundred things not think & make Tao (way) nature block obstacles!
若聽說不修,令人反生邪念。
If hear say not cultivate, make people opposite born wicked thoughts.
但依法修行,無住相法施。
But according Teachings cultivate action, no fixed appearance Teachings Giving.
汝等若悟,依此說,依此用,依此行,依此作,即不失本宗。
You etc if enlightened, according these say, according these use, according these action, according these do, then not lose original Sect.
若有人問汝義,問有,將無對;問無,將有對;問凡,以聖對;問聖,以凡對;二道相因,生中道義。
If have person ask me meaning, ask about have, get no answer (pair); ask about nothing, get have answer (pair); ask about common, use Sage answer (pair); ask about Sage, use common answer (pair); two Tao (way) influence each other cause, born middle Tao (way) meaning.
如一問一對,餘問一依此作,即不失理也。
If one ask one answer (pair), excess ask one according this do, then not lose Truth.
設有人問:『何名為暗?』
Assume have person ask: "what is named as darkness?"
答云:『明是因,暗是緣,明沒則暗,以明顯暗,以暗顯明,來去相因,成中道義。』
Answers: "bright is cause, dark is factor fate, bright no more then dark, use bright show dark, use dark show bright, come go influence each other cause, become middle Tao (way) meaning."
餘問悉皆如此。
Other ask all like that.
汝等於後傳法,依轉相教授,勿失宗旨!」
You etc from onwards get transfer Teachings, accordingly turn appearance taught, do not lose Sect Central Point!"
師於太極元年壬子,延和七月,命門人往新州國恩寺建塔,仍令促工。
Teacher on Tai Ji Yuan year Ren Zi, Yan He seven month, order Disciples go Province Xin Country Gratitude Temple build tower, then order hurry work.
次年夏末,落成。
Next year summer end, completion.
七月一日,集徒眾曰:「吾至八月,欲離世間。
Seven month first day, gather Disciples crowd says: "I on eight month, wish leave world.
汝等有疑,早須相問,為汝破疑,令汝迷盡。
You etc have doubts, early need ask me, for you break doubt, make you lost-way finished.
吾若去後,無人教汝。」
I if go later, nobody teach you."
法海等聞,悉皆涕泣;惟有神會,神情不動,亦無涕泣。
Disciple Fa Hai etc hear, all cry; only have Disciple Shen Hui, emotion not move, & not cry.
師云:「神會小師,欲得善不善等,毀譽不動,哀樂不生。
Teacher: "Disciple Shen Hui little teacher, wish get good & no good etc, destruction & reputation not move, sad & happy not born.
餘者不得,數年山中,竟脩何道?
Rest not get, many years at mountain, all cultivate what Tao (way)?
汝今悲泣,為憂阿誰?
You today sad crying, for worry who?
若憂吾不知去處,吾自知去處。
If worry me not know go where, I self know go where.
吾若不知去處,終不預報於汝。
I if not know go where, finally not beforehand tell on you.
汝等悲泣,蓋為不知吾去處;若知吾去處,即不合悲泣。
You etc sad cry, all because not know I go where; if know me go where, then not together sad cry.
法性本無生滅去來。
Teaching nature original no born disappear go come.
汝等盡坐,吾與汝說一偈,名曰:『真假動靜偈』。
You etc all sit, I with you say one poem, name say: 'Real Fake Move Quiet Poem'.
汝等誦取此偈,與吾意同;依此脩行,不失宗旨。」
You etc recite get this poem, with me meaning same; according this cultivate action, not lose Sect Central Point."
眾僧作禮,請師作偈。
Crowd Monks make respect, invite Teacher make poem.
偈曰:「一切無有真,不以見於真;若見於真者,是見盡非真。
Poem: "all no have real, not use see as real; if see as real, is see all not real.
若能自有真,離假即心真。
If able self has real, away fake then heart real.
自心不離假,無真何處真?
Self heart not away fake, no real where has real?
有情即解動,無情即不動;若修不動行,同無情不動。
Have emotion then release move, no emotion then no move; if cultivate no move action, same no emotion not move.
若覓真不動,動上有不動。
If seek real not move, move top has no move.
不動是不動,無情無佛種。
Not move is not move, no emotion no Buddha seeds.
能善分別相,第一義不動。
Able good at differentiate appearance, first meaning not move.
但作如此見,即是真如用。
But do this see, is then real according use.
報諸學道人,努力須用意!
Tell all learn Tao (way) persons, make effort need use intention!
莫於大乘門,卻執生死智。
Do not in big Sect Method, but fixed-on born & death wisdom.
若言下相應,即共論佛義;若實不相應,合掌令歡喜。
If saying under response, then same discuss Buddha meaning; if really no response, together palm make happy.
此宗本無諍,諍即失道意;執逆諍法門,自性入生死。」
This Sect original no argument, argument then lose Tao (way) intention; fixed-on against argument teaching method, self nature enter born & death."
時,徒眾聞說偈已,普皆作禮。
Then, Disciples crowd hear say poem finished, all pay respect.
並體師意,各各攝心,依法修行,更不敢諍。
And understand Teacher meaning, everyone draws in thoughts, according Teachings cultivate action, & not dare argue.
乃知大師不久住世,法海上座再拜問曰:「和尚入滅之後,衣法當付何人?」
Because know big Teacher not long in world, Disciple Fa Hai upper seat again pay respect asks: "Monk Teacher enter disappear later, Clothing Teaching should give which person?"
師曰:「吾於大梵寺說法,以至於今,鈔錄流行,目曰:《法寶壇經》汝等守護,遞相傳授,度諸群生,但依此說,是名正法。
Teacher: "I in Da Fan Temple say Teachings, from then to today, record & spread, records named: '6th Zen Master Scripture' you etc guard protect, give Disciples transfer teach, save all crowd beings, & according this sayings, is named correct Teachings.
今為汝等說法,不付其衣。
Today for you etc say Teachings, do not give the Clothing Treasure.
蓋為汝等信根淳熟,決定無疑,堪任大事;然据先祖達摩付授偈意,衣不合傳。
Because for you etc belief roots pure ripe, decide no doubt, able give big tasks; then according before Master Da Mo given instruction poem meaning, Clothing Treasure not right transfer give.
偈曰:『吾本來茲土,傳法救迷情;一華開五葉,結果自然成。』」
Poem: "I (before Master Da Mo) original come this land, transfer teach Teachings to save lost-way emotional beings; one flower open 5 leaves (i.e. 5 Masters), result natural become." "
師復曰:「諸善知識!
Teacher again says: "all good knowledge people!
汝等各各淨心,聽吾說法。
You etc everyone clear your heart, hear me say Teachings.
若欲成就種智,須達一相三昧,一行三昧。
If wish accomplish seeds Wisdom, need reach One Appearance Three Things, One Action Three Things.
若於一切處而不住相,於彼相中不生憎愛亦無取捨,不念利益成壞等事,安閒恬靜,虛融澹泊,此名『一相三昧』。
If for all places & not fix-on appearance, & other appearances in not born hate & love & no take & give, not think of benefits become bad etc things, comfortable relaxed quiet, complete without riches, this named 'One Appearance Three Things'.
若於一切處,行住坐臥,純一直心,不動道場,真成淨土,此名『一行三昧』。
If for all places, move live sit sleep, pure one straight heart, not move Tao (way) Place, real become clean land, this named 'One Action Three Things'.
若人具二三昧:如地有種,含藏長養,成熟其實;一相一行亦復如是。
If person has the two Three Things: Buddha land has seeds, hidden grow rear, ripe its filling; one appearance one do all are like that.
我今說法,猶如時雨,普潤大地;汝等佛性,譬諸種子,遇茲霑洽,悉皆發生。
I today say Teachings, like time rain, massively wet big ground; your etc Buddha nature, like all seeds, encounter this wet opportunity, all happen.
承吾旨者,決獲菩提;依吾行者,定證妙果。
Receive my Instructions persons, definitely get Buddha Enlightenment; according my action persons, definitely attain wonder Fruit.
聽吾偈曰:『心地含諸種,普雨悉皆萌;頓悟華情已,菩提果自成。』」
Hear my poem: "heart ground contain all seeds, massive rain all grow; instanteous enlighten beautiful emotion already, Buddha Enlightenment Fruit self become." "
師說偈已:「其法無二,其心亦然。
Teacher says poem finished: "the Teachings no two, the heart like that.
其道清淨,亦無諸相。
The Tao (way) clean clear, & no all appearances.
汝等慎勿『觀靜』及『空其心』!
you etc careful not 'observe quiet' or 'empty the heart'!
此心本淨,無可取捨。
This heart original clean, nothing able get or give.
各自努力,隨緣好去。」
Each self make efforts, according fate good go."
爾時,徒眾作禮而退。
Then, Disciples crowd make respect & withdraw.
大師,七月八日,忽謂門人曰:「吾欲歸新州,汝等速理舟楫!」
Big Teacher, seventh month eighth day, suddenly ask Disciples: "I wish return Province Xin, you etc quick administer boat steer!"
大眾哀留甚堅。
Big crowd sad ask stay very strong.
師曰:「諸佛出現,猶示涅槃;有來必去,理亦常然。
Teacher: "all Buddhas appear, all say die disappear; have come definitely go, truth is always like that.
吾此形骸,歸必有所。」
My this appearance body, return definitely has place."
眾曰:「師從此去,早晚可回。」
Crowd: "Teacher from here go, early late can return."
師曰:「葉落歸根,來時無口。」
Teacher: "leaf drop return root, come time no opening."
又問曰:「正法眼藏,傳付何人?」
Again ask: "Correct Teaching Eye Hide, transfer teach which person?"
師曰:「有道者得,無心者通。」
Teacher: "have Tao (way) person get, no heart person know through."
又問:「後莫有難否?」
Again ask: "later not any disaster not?"
師曰:「吾滅後五六年,當有一人來取吾首。
Teacher: "I disappear later five six years, have one person come get my body.
聽吾記曰:『頭上養親,口裏須餐,遇滿之難,楊柳為官。』」
Hear me remark: "head top rear parent, mouth inside need food, meet full of disaster, Person Yang Liu become official." "
又云:「吾去七十年,有二菩薩,從東方來,一出家,一在家,同時興化,建立吾宗;諦緝伽藍,昌隆法嗣。」
And say: "I go 70 years, have two Sub-Buddhas, from east side come, one is Monk, one is non-Monk, same time spread Teachings, build setup my Sect; rebuild Temples, widely recruit Teachings Disciples."
問曰:「未知從上佛祖應現已來,傳授幾代?
Ask: "not know from past Buddha Master appear come, teach transfer how many generations?
願垂開示。」
Hope can tell us."
師云:「古佛應世,已無數量,不可計也。
Teacher: "Old Buddhas appear world, already countless, not able count.
今以七佛為始;過去莊嚴劫,毗婆尸佛,尸棄佛,毗舍浮佛;今賢劫,拘留孫佛,拘那含牟尼佛,迦葉佛,釋迦文佛;是為七佛。
Today have 7 Buddhas as start; past Zhuang Yan Disaster, Bi Po Shi Buddha, Qi Shi Buddha, Bi She Fu Buddha; now Xian Disaster, Ju Liu Sun Buddha, Ju Nan Han Mou Ni Buddha, Jia Ye Buddha (Green Period Buddha), Shi Jia Wen Buddha (Red Period Buddha); are as 7 Buddhas.
釋迦文佛首傳摩訶迦葉尊者,第二阿難尊者,第三商那和修尊者,第四優婆毱多尊者,第五提多迦尊者,第六彌遮迦尊者,第七婆須蜜多尊者,第八佛馱難提尊者,第九伏馱蜜多尊者,第十協尊者,十一富那夜奢尊者,十二馬鳴大士,十三迦毗摩羅尊者,十四龍樹大士,十五迦那提婆尊者,十六羅睺羅多尊者,十七僧伽難提尊者,十八伽耶舍多尊者,十九鳩摩羅多尊者,二十闍耶多尊者,二十一婆修盤頭尊者,二十二摩孥羅尊者,二十三鶴勒那尊者,二十四師子尊者,二十五婆舍斯多尊者,二十六不如蜜多尊者,二十七般若多羅尊者,二十八菩提達摩尊者,二十九慧可大師,三十僧璨大師,三十一道信大師,三十二弘忍大師,慧能是為三十三祖。
Shi Jia Wen Buddha (Red Period Buddha) first transfer teach Mo He Jia Respectable One, second Ah Nan Respectable One, third Shang Na He Respectable One, fourth You Po Ju Duo Respectable One, fifth Di Duo Jia Respectable One, sixth Mi Zhe Jia Respectable One, seventh Po Xu Mi Duo Respectable One, eighth Fo Tuo Nan Di Respectable One, ninth Fu Tuo Mi Duo Respectable One, tenth Xie Respectable One, eleventh Fu Na Ye She Respectable One, twelfth Ma Ming Big Brave One, thirteenth Jia Pi Mo Luo Respectable One, fourteenth Long Shu Big Brave One, fifteenth Jia Na Di Po Respectable One, sixteenth Luo Hou Luo Duo Respectable One, seventeenth Seng Qie Nan Di Respectable One, eighteenth Qie Ye She Duo Respectable One, nineteenth Jiu Mo Luo Duo Respectable One, twentieth Du Ye Duo Respectable One, twenty-one Po Xiu Pan Tou Respectable One, twenty-two Mo Nu Luo Respectable One, twenty-three He Le Na Respectable One, twenty-four Shi Zi Respectable One, twenty-five Po She Si Duo Respectable One, twenty-six Bu Ru Mi Duo Respectable One, twenty-seven Ban Ruo Duo Luo Respectable One, twenty-eight Pu Di Da Mo Respectable One, twenty-nine Hui Ke Big Teacher, thirty Seng Can Big Teacher, thirty-one Dao Xin Big Teacher, thirty-two Hong Ren Big Teacher, Hui Neng is as thirty-three Zen Master.
從上諸祖,各有稟承。
From above all Zen Masters, each has come from.
汝等向後,遞代流傳,母令乖誤!」
You etc spread later, for generations spread teach, do not make stop delay!"
大師,先天二年癸丑歲,八月初三日,於國恩寺齋罷,謂諸徒眾曰:「汝等各依位坐,吾與汝別。」
Big Teacher, before heaven two years Gui Chou time, eighth month the third day, in Guo En Temple vegetarian meals, tells all Disciples crowd: "you etc each sit according seats, I farewell with you."
法海白言:「和尚留何教法,令後代迷人得見佛性?」
Disciple Fa Hai says: "Monk Teacher leave what teach Teachings, make later generations lost-way get see Buddha nature?"
師言:「汝等諦聽!
Teacher says: "you etc carefully listen!
後代迷人,若識眾生,即是佛性;若不識眾生,萬劫覓佛難逢。
Later generations lost-way people, if know common beings, is then Buddha nature; if not know common beings, thousands of disasters seek Buddha cannot meet.
吾今教汝識自心眾生,見自心佛性。
I today teach you know self heart common beings, see self heart Buddha nature.
欲求見佛,但識眾生;只為眾生迷佛,非是佛迷眾生。
Wish seek see Buddha, only know common beings; just because common beings are lost-way Buddha, not Buddha are lost-way common beings.
自性若悟,眾生是佛;自性若迷,佛是眾生。
Self nature if enlightened, common beings are Buddha; self nature if lost-way, Buddha are common beings.
汝等心若險曲,即佛在眾生中;一念平直,即是眾生成佛。
You etc heart if dangerous crooked, is then Buddha is in common beings inside; one thought flat upright, is then common beings become Buddha.
我心自有佛,自佛是真佛。
My heart self has Buddha, self Buddha is real Buddha.
自若無佛心,何處求真佛?
Self if no Buddha heart, where seek real Buddha?
汝等自心是佛,更莫狐疑!
You etc self heart is Buddha, do not more self doubts!
外無一物而能建立,皆是本心生萬種法。
Outside no one thing able build, all are self heart born all kinds Teachings.
故經云:『心生種種法生,心滅種種法滅。』
Therefore Scriptures say: "heart born kind kinds of Teachings born, heart disappear kind kinds of Teachings disappear."
吾今留一偈,與汝等別,名『自性真佛偈』。
I today leave one poem, with you etc farewell, is named 'Self Heart Real Buddha Poem'.
後代之人,識此偈意,自見本心,自成佛道。」
Later generations of people, know this poem meaning, self see original heart, self become Buddha Tao (way)."
偈曰:「真如自性是真佛,邪見三毒是魔王;邪迷之時魔在舍,正見之時佛在堂。
Poem: "real Buddha self nature is real Buddha, wicked thoughts three poisons are satan king; wicked lost-way of time satan at house, right thoughts of time Buddha at house.
性中邪見三毒生,即是魔王來住舍;正見自除三毒心,魔變成佛真無假。
Nature inside wicked thoughts three poisons born, is then satan king come live house; correct thoughts self rid three poison heart, satan change become Buddha real no fake.
法身報身及化身,三身本來是一身;若向性中能自見,即是成佛菩提因。
Teaching Body Fulfilled Body & Change Body, three Bodies original are one Body; if towards nature inside able self see, is then become Buddha Buddha seeds cause.
本從化身生淨性,淨性常在化身中;性使化身行正道,當來圓滿真無窮。
Original from Change Body born clean nature, clean nature always in Change Body inside; nature make Change Body action correct Tao (way), immediately come complete real no limit.
婬性本來淨性因,除婬即是淨性身;性中各自離五欲,見性剎那即是真。
Lust nature original come clean nature cause, get rid lust is then clean nature body; nature inside each self away five desires, see nature moment is then real.
今生若遇頓教門,忽悟自性見世尊。
This lifetime if meet instanteous Teaching Method, suddenly enlightened self nature see Red Period Buddha.
若欲修行覓作佛,不知何處擬求真?
If wish cultivate action seek become buddha, not know where make get real?
若能心中自見真,有真即是成佛因;不見自性外覓佛,起心總是大癡人。
If able heart inside self see real, has real is then become Buddha cause; not see self nature outside seek Buddha, arise heart always is big stupid person.
頓教法門今已留,救渡世人須自修;報汝當來學道者,不作此見大悠悠。」
Instanteous Teaching Teaching Method today already leave behind, save transfer world people need self cultivate; repay you come as learn Tao (way) persons, not make this see waste time."
師說偈已,告曰:「汝等好住,吾滅度後,莫作世情悲泣雨淚!
Teacher says poem finished, tells: "you etc good live, I disappear go Heaven later, do not make world emotion sad crying rain tears!
受人弔問,身著孝服,非吾弟子!
Get people funeral ask, body wear filial clothings, not my disciples!
亦非正法!
And not correct teachings!
但識自本心,見自本性,無動無靜,無生無滅,無去無來,無是無非,無住無往。
But know self original heart, see self original nature, no move no quiet, no born no disappear, no go no come, no right no wrong, no live here no go there.
恐汝等心迷,不會吾意,今再囑汝,令汝見性。
Afraid you etc heart lost-way, do not understand my meaning, today again give instructions, make you see nature.
吾滅度後,依此修行,如吾在日。
I disappear go Heaven later, according these cultivate action, like I am around days.
若違吾教,縱吾在世,亦無有益。
If against my Teachings, even I am living in world, is no have benefit.
復說偈曰:『兀兀不修善,騰騰不造惡;寂寂斷見聞,蕩蕩心無著。』」
Again say poem: "not even not cultivate good, according fate not make evil; quiet inside cut-off see know, relaxing heart not fixed." "
師說偈已,端坐至三更,忽謂門人曰:「吾行矣!」
Teacher says poem finished, upright sit to 3am, suddenly tells Disciples: "I go now!"
奄忽遷化。
At the moment pass away.
於時異香滿室,白虹屬地,林木變白,禽獸哀鳴。
Then nice smells full room, white rainbow covers land, forest trees become white, birds & animals sadly cry.
十一月,廣韶新三郡官僚,洎門人僧俗,爭迎真身,莫決所之。
Eleven month, Province Guang Shao Xin three province Officials, & Disciples Monk & non-Monk, compete to welcome 6th Zen Master dead real body, unable decide what place to put.
乃焚香禱曰:「香煙指處,師所歸焉!」
Then burn incense praying: "incense smoke point place, Teacher body where belong!"
時,香煙直貫曹溪。
Then, incense smoke straight go Place Cao Xi.
十一月十三日遷神龕併所傳衣缽而回。
Eleven month thirteen day move 6th Zen Master holy body & he gets Clothing Treasure & return.
次年七月二十五日出龕,弟子方辩以香泥土上之。
Next year seven month twenty-five day out holy body, Disciple Fang Bian use fragrant soil put up.
門人憶念取首之記,遂先以鐵葉漆布,固護師頸入塔。
Disciples remember rob head of remark, quickly first use metal leaves paint cover, heavily guard Teacher neck enter Tower.
忽於塔內白光出現,直上衝天,三日始散。
Suddenly from Tower inside white light appear, straight up towards sky, three days then beginning disperse.
韶州奏聞,奉敕立碑,紀師道行。
Province Shao notify Emperor what hear, get Imperial Decree setup memorial, remember Teacher Tao (way) actions.
師,春秋七十有六,年二十四傳衣,三十九祝髮。
Teacher, lifespan seventy-six, age twenty-four get Clothing Treasure, age thirty-nine shave hairs become Monk.
說法利生三十七載。
Say Teachings benefits beings thirty-seven years.
得旨嗣法者四十三人,悟道超凡者莫知其數。
Get Mandate spread Teachings forty-three persons, enlightened Tao (way) surpass common world people not know the numbers.
達摩所傳信衣,中宗賜磨衲寶鉢,及方辯塑師真相,並道具等,主塔侍者尸之,永鎮寶林道場。
Master Da Mo what transfer give belief Clothing Treasure, Emperor Zhong Zong give treasure food bowl, & Disciple Fang Bian make Teacher real body appearance, & Tao (way) equipments etc, inside Tower has servant with body, forever protect guard Bao Lin Tao (way) Place.
流傳壇經,以顯宗旨。
Spread teach Six Zen Master Scripture, for obvious Sect Instructions.
此皆興隆三寶,普利群生者。
This all make popular Buddhism Three Treasures, widely benefit beings.
