第一篇文韬 Chapter 1 Book Strategy

文师第一 Book Teacher Sub-Chapter 1

文王将田,史编布卜,曰:田于渭阳,将大得焉。

Sage-King Wen about to go hunting, ask History Official to get divination, says: hunting at Place Wei Yang, will big get.

非龙非螭,非虎非罴;兆得公侯,天遗汝师。

Not dragon not without-horn dragon, not tiger not bear; sign shows get Big Minister, Heaven gives you a Teacher.

以之佐昌,施及三王。

To assist your Empire prosperous, down 3 Sage-King generations.

文王曰:“兆致是乎?”

Sage-King Wen: "divination is it like that?"

史编曰:“编之太祖史畴,为禹占,得皋陶,兆比于此。“

History Official: "written in Sage-King Shun history records, for Sage-King Yu divination, get Person Gao Tao, divination now is like before."

文王乃斋三日,乘田车,驾田马,田于渭阳,卒见太公,坐茅以渔。

Sage-King Wen then vegetarian for 3 days, ride hunting car, ride hunting horse, hunting at Place Wei Yang, first see Jiang Tai Gong, sitting in hut fishing.

文王劳而问之曰:“子乐渔耶?”

Sage-King Wen respectfully ask: "you happy fishing?"

太公曰:“臣闻君子乐得其志;少人乐得其事。

Jiang Tai Gong: "I hear Gentleman happy when get ambition; petty person happy get his things.

今吾渔,甚有似也。”

Today I fishing, something like that."

文王曰:“何谓其有似也?”

Sage-King Wen: "what do you mean something like that?"

太公曰:“钓有三权,禄等以权,死等以权,官等以权。

Jiang Tai Gong: "fishing has 3 power, bait salary as power, live or die as power, use what bait official post as power.

夫钓以求得也,其情深,可以观大矣。”

Person hook to wish to get, the intelligence deep, able to observe big."

文王曰:“愿闻其情。”

Sage-King: "wish to hear the intelligence."

太公曰:“源深而水流,水流而鱼生之,情也。

Jiang Tai Gong: "water source deep then water flowing, water flowing then fishes live inside, intelligence.

根深而木长,木长而实生之,情也。

Root deep then wood grow, wood grow then fruits born with, intelligence.

君子情同而亲合,亲合而事生之,情也。

Gentlemen intelligence same & relationship match, relationship match then things done with, intelligence.

言语应对者,情之饰也。

Words need to match, intelligence of cover.

言至情者,事之极也。

Words to intelligence, things of extreme.

今臣言至情不讳,君其恶之乎?”

Today I say extreme intelligence no withdrawal, you hate or not?"

文王曰:“惟仁人能受正谏,不恶至情,何为其然?”

Sage-King Wen: "only Ren (humanity) Person able receive direct criticisms, not hate extreme intelligence, of course I am like that."

太公曰:”缗微饵明,小鱼食之。

Jiang Tai Gong: "line micro bait obvious, small fish eats.

缗绸饵香,中鱼食之。

Line middle thickness bait smell nice, middle size fish eats.

缗隆饵丰,大鱼食之。

Line big thickness bait big, big fish eats.

夫鱼食其饵,乃牵于缗;人食其禄,乃服于君。

Those fishes which eat the baits, then hook up to kill; persons who eat Official salary, then submit to Emperor.

故以饵取鱼,鱼可杀。

Therefore use bait get fish, fish can get kill.

以禄取人,人可竭。

Use Official salary get Person, Person give all efforts.

以家取国,国可拔。

Use Family get Country, Country can get.

以国取天下,天下可毕。

Use Country get under Heaven, under Heaven can get finished.

鸣呼!

Oh!

曼曼绵绵,其聚必散。

Fullness & colourful, the gathering definitely disperse.

嘿嘿昧昧,其光必远。

Dark & hidden, the light definitely go far.

微哉圣人之德诱乎,独见乐哉。

Micro is a Sage's virtues luring, alone see is happy.

圣人之虑,各归其次,而树敛焉。”

Sage's worries, each to each class, then upright correct the mass.

文王曰:“树敛何若而天下归之?“

Sage-King Wen: "upright correct how then under Heaven submit?"

太公曰:”天下非一人之天下,乃天下之天下也。

Jiang Tai Gong: "under Heaven not one person's under Heaven, but under Heaven's under Heaven.

同天下之利者则得天下,擅天下之利者则失天下。

Share under Heaven benefits person then get under Heaven, alone get under Heaven benefits then lose under Heaven.

天有时,地有财,能与人共之者仁也。

Heaven has 4 seasons, Earth has treasures, able with people share person is Ren (humanity).

仁之所在,天下归之。

Ren (humanity) is where, under Heaven submit.

与人同忧同乐,同好同恶,义也。

With people same worry same happy, same love same hate, is Righteousness.

义之所在,天下赴之。

Righteousness is where, under Heaven go to.

凡人恶死而乐生,好德而归利,能生利者道也,道之所在,天下归之。”

Common people hate death & love living, love virtues & follow benefits, able born benefits person is Tao (way), Tao (way) is where, under Heaven submit."

文王再拜曰:“允哉!散不受天之诏命乎!“

Sage-King Wen again bow: "perfect! I where will not follow Heaven's Order!"

乃载与俱归,立为师。

Then transport together back, as Jiang Tai Gong as Teacher.

 

盈虚第二 Flourishing Dying Sub-Chapter 2

文王问太公曰:“天下熙熙,一盈一虚,一治一乱,所以然者何也?

Sage-King Wen asks Jiang Tai Gong: "under Heaven becoming, sometime flourishing sometime dying, sometime well-governed sometime chaos, why like that?

其君贤不肖不等乎?

Is it the emperor good or no good?

其天时变化自然乎?”

Or is it Heaven time change naturally?

太公曰:“君不肖,则国危而民乱。

Jiang Tai Gong: "emperor no good, then country danger & people chaos.

君贤圣,则国安而民治。

Emperor good Sage, then Country peaceful & people well-governed.

祸福在君,不在天时。”

Disaster or good fortune rests with the Emperor, not with Heaven time."

文王曰:“古之圣贤,可得闻乎?”

Sage-King Wen: "ancient Sage-King, can tell me?"

太公曰:“昔者帝尧之王天下,上世所谓贤君也。”

Jiang Tai Gong: "ancient time Sage-King Yao of Sage-King Government under Heaven, the world says he is a Sage-King.

文王曰:“其治如何?”

Sage-King Wen: "his Government how?"

太公曰:“帝尧王天下之时,金银珠玉不饰,锦绣文绮不衣,奇怪珍异不视,玩好之器不宝,淫佚之乐不听,宫垣屋宇不垩,甍桷椽楹不斫,茅茨偏庭不剪。

Jiang Tai Gong: "Sage-King Yao governs under Heaven time, not use gold silver gem jade as accessories, not wear expensive clothings, not see weird precious things, not treasure good play vessels, not hear adultery music, not paint palace walls, not engrave wall decorations, not cut garden.

鹿裘御寒,布衣掩形,粝粱之饭,藜藿之羹。

Use deer fur protect cold, use cloth hide body shape, use rough rice as meal, eat wild vegetables as dishes.

不役以作之故,害民耕织之时,削心约志,从事乎无为。

Do not anyhow national service, spoiling people farming & making clothes, control heart ambitions, to do things inaction.

吏,忠正奉法者尊其位;廉洁爱人者厚其禄。

Officials, loyal right obey laws Officials promote positions; non-corruptible love people increase salary pay.

民,有孝慈者爱敬之,尽力农桑者慰勉之。

The people, have filial piety compassion then love respect with, try best farming & rearing clothing silkworms to encourage with.

旌别淑慝,表其门闾。

Differentiate good & bad, say good those who do good.

平心正节,以法度禁邪伪。

Calm heart correct spending, use laws forbids evil & wrongdoings.

所憎者,有功必赏,所爱者,有罪必罚。

Even persons who He hates, have merits definitely reward, even persons who He loves, have sins definitely punish.

存养天下鳏寡孤独,赈赡祸亡之家。

Save rear under Heaven no-wife no-husband orphans, donation to those families that are broken by disasters.

其自奉也甚薄,其赋役也甚寡,故万民富乐而无饥寒之色。

For his own earning is low, his national service tax is low, therefore thousands of people rich happy & no hungry cold colours.

百姓戴其君如日月,亲其君如父母。”

The people love the Emperor like sun & moon, closes to Emperor like father & mother.

文王曰:“大哉,贤德之君也。”

Sage-King Wen: "big goodness, good virtues Sage-King."

 

国务第三 Country Affairs Sub-Chapter 3

文王问太公曰:“愿闻为国之务,欲使主尊人安,为之奈何?”

Sage-King Wen asks Jiang Tai Gong: wish hear Country of affairs, wish make Emperor well respected & people living peaceful, how to do?"

太公曰:“爱民而已。”

Jiang Tai Gong: "just love people only."

文王曰:“爱民奈何?”

Sage-King Wen: "how to love people?"

太公曰:“利而勿害,成而勿败,生而勿杀,与而勿夺,乐而勿苦,喜而勿怒。“

Jiang Tai Gong: "benefit do not harm, complete do not fail, make live do not kill, give do not rob, make happy do not make suffering, make happy do not make angry."

文王曰:“敢请释其故。”

Sage-King Wen: "dare ask explain within meaning."

太公曰:“民不失务则利之。

Jiang Tai Gong: "people not lose jobs then to benefit with.

农不失时则成之。

Farm not lose timing then to complete with.

薄赋敛则与之。

Low tax then to give with.

俭宫室台榭则乐之。

Save in palace building then happy citizen with.

吏清不苛扰则喜之。

Officials non corrupt not disturb people then happy with.

民失其务则害之。

People lose their jobs then to harm with.

农失其时则败之。

Farmers lose timing then to fail with.

无罪而罚则杀之。

No sin & punish then to kill with.

重赋敛则夺之。

Heavy tax then to rob with.

多营宫室台榭以疲民力则苦之。

Many palace building to tire people strength then to make sufferings with.

吏浊苛扰则怒之。

The officials corrupted & disturb people then to angry with.

故善为国者,驭民如父母之爱子。

Therefore good at governing Country person, policy his people like parents love their children.

如兄之爱弟。

Like elder brother loves younger brother.

见其饥寒则为之忧。

See the hungry & cold then become worried.

见其劳苦则为之悲。

See the labour sufferings then become sad.

赏罚如加诸身。

Reward & punishments like add on self.

赋敛如取于己。

Taxing like get from self.

此爱民之道也。”

This is love people of Tao (way)."

 

大礼第四 Big Rites Sub-Chapter 4

文王问太公曰:“君臣之礼如何?”

Sage-King Wen asks Jiang Tai Gong: "Emperor & Officials of rites how?"

太公曰:“为上惟临,为下惟沉。

Jiang Tai Gong: "as above only understand below, as below only humble follow.

临而无远,沉而无隐。

Understand below then Officials not distance, humble follow then no hidden things.

为上惟周,为下惟定。

As above only give gratitude, as below only stable in position.

周,则天也。

Give gratitude, like Heaven.

定,则地也。

Stable in position, like Earth.

或天或地,大礼乃成。”

Or Heaven (Emperor) or Earth (Officials), big Rites then form."

文王曰:“主位如何?”

Sage-King Wen: "Emperor position how do?"

太公曰:“安徐而静,柔节先定。

Jiang Tai Gong: "comfortable & quiet, smooth rhythm make decision first.

善与而不争。

Open to opinions & not argue.

虚心平志,待物以正。

Humble upright, treat things as right.

文王曰:“主听如何?”

Sage-King Wen: "Emperor how listen?"

太公曰:“勿妄而许,勿逆而拒。

Jiang Tai Gong: "not wrong & accept, not against & reject.

许之则失守,拒之则闭塞。

Easily accept then lose principle, reject easily then closed opinions.

高山仰止,不可极也。

Emperor should be like mountain high, cannot reach.

深渊度之,不可测也。

Emperor should be like deep valley, cannot measure.

神明之德,正静其极。”

Godly bright of virtues, correct quiet to extreme.

文王曰:“主明如何?”

Sage-King Wen: "Emperor how to be wise?"

太公曰:“目贵明,耳贵聪,心贵智。

Jiang Tai Gong: "eyes value bright, ears value sound, heart value wisdom.

以天下之目视,则无不见也。

Use under Heaven eyes to see, then nothing cannot see.

以天下之耳听,则无不闻也。

Use under Heaven ears to listen, then nothing cannot hear.

以天下之心虑,则无不知也。

Use under Heaven hearts to worry, then nothing cannot know.

辐辏并进,则明不蔽矣。

Petitions then come, then Emperor wise not closed opinions.

 

明传第五 Real Teaching-Transfer Sub-Chapter 5

文王寝疾,召太公望,太子发在侧。

Sage-King Wen sick in bed, calls for Jiang Tai Gong, crown prince is at side.

“鸣呼?天将弃予。

"Hai? Heaven is about to forsake me.

周之社稷,将以属汝。

Dynasty Zhou Empire, is about belong to you.

今予欲师至道之言,以明传之子孙。”

Today wish Teacher give extreme Tao (way) of saying, for real teaching-transfer to my grandchildren."

太公曰:“王何所问?”

Jiang Tai Gong: "Sage-King what you ask?"

文王曰:"先圣之道,其所止,其所起,可得闻乎?”

Sage-King Wen: "ancient Sage-Kings of Tao (way), cause them to stop, cause them to rise, can hear?"

太公曰:“见善而怠,时至而疑,知非而处,此三者,道之所止也。

Jiang Tai Gong: "see good & lazy, timing come & doubtful, know wrong & do, these 3 things, Tao (way) that cause them to stop.

柔而静,恭而敬,强而弱,忍而刚,此四者,道之所起也。

Gentle & quiet, respect & respectful, strong & weak, endure & strong, these 4 things, Tao (way) that cause them to rise.

故义胜欲则昌,欲胜义则亡;敬胜怠则吉,怠胜敬则灭。”

Therefore Righteousness wins desire then Country prospers, desire wins Righteousness then country dies; respectfully-do wins laziness then luck, laziness wins respectfully-do then destroy."

 

六守第六 Six Principles Sub-Chapter 6

文王问太公曰:“君国主民者,其所以失之者何也?”

Sage-King Wen asks Jiang Tai Gong: "Emperor governing Country & guiding the people, what the reasons for losing them?"

太公曰:“不谨所与也。

Jiang Tai Gong: "not careful in using persons.

人君有六守三宝。”

Emperor selects persons has 6 Principles & 3 Treasures."

文王问:“六守何也?”

Sage-King Wen asks: "6 Principles are what?"

太公曰:“一曰仁,二曰义,三曰忠,四曰信,五曰勇,六曰谋,是谓六守。”

Jiang Tai Gong: "one is Ren (humanity), two is Righteousness, three is Loyalty, four is Trustworthiness, five is Courage, six is planning, these are the 6 Principles."

文王曰:“谨择六守者何也?”

Sage-King Wen: "how to careful chooses have these 6 Principles persons?"

太公曰:“富之而观其无犯,贵之而观其无骄;付之而观其无转;使之而观其无隐;危之而观其无恐;事之而观其无穷。

Jiang Tai Gong: "make him rich & observe him no offence, make him high post & observe him no proud; give him duties & observe him no disloyal; make him solve questions & observe him no hide things; danger him & observe him no scare; give him many tasks & observe him no stop-solutions.

富之而不犯者仁也;贵之而不骄者义也;付之而不转者忠也;使之而不隐者信也;危之而不恐者勇也;事之而不穷者谋也。

Rich & no offence is Ren (humanity) Person; high post & no proud is Righteousness Person; have duties & no disloyal is Loyal Person; solve questions & no hide things is Trustworthy Person; danger & no scare is Courage Person; many duties & no stop-solutions is Planning Person.

人君无以三宝借人,借人则君失其威。”

Emperor do not borrow 3 Treasures to other people, if borrow other people then Emperor loses the power."

文王曰:“敢问三宝?”

Sage-King Wen: "dare ask what are 3 Treasures?"

太公曰:“大农,大工,大商,谓之三宝。

Jiang Tai Gong: "big farming, big works, big commerce, are the 3 Treasures.

农一其乡则谷足,工一其乡则器足,商一其乡则货足。

Farmers gather the village then rice full, works gather the village then equipments full, commerce gathers the village then goods full.

三宝各安其处,民乃不虑。

3 Treasures each in each place, then the people no worry.

无乱其乡,无乱其族。

No chaos in villages, no chaos in family clans.

臣无富于君,都无大于国。

Officials not richer than Emperor, city not bigger than Capitol.

六守长,则君昌。

6 Principles use, then Emperor prospers.

三宝全,则国安。”

3 Treasures complete, then Country stable.

 

守土第七 Guard Lands Sub-Chapter 7

文王问太公曰:“守土奈何?”

Sage-King Wen asks Jiang Tai Gong: "how to guard Empire lands?"

太公曰:“无疏其亲,无怠其众,抚其左右,御其四旁。

Jiang Tai Gong: "not away from close allies, not lazy on the people, pacify the left right neighbours, to control the 4 boundaries.

无借人国柄。

No borrow of governing Country power.

借人国柄,则失其权。

Borrow of governing country power, then lose the authority.

无掘壑而附丘,无舍本而治末。

Do not dig trenches to make mountain high, do not forsake foundation & seek the leaf.

日中必彗,操刀必割,执斧必伐。

Sun on top definitely shine-dry the things, have knife definitely cut, have axe definitely axe.

日中不彗,是谓失时。

Sun on top do not shine-dry the things, is known as lose timing.

操刀不割,失利之期。

Have knife not cut, lose sharp advantage.

执斧不伐,贼人将来。

Have axe not axe, thief person will come get.

涓涓不塞,将为江河。

Water not stop, will become rivers.

荧荧不救,炎炎奈何?

Fire sparks not save, big fire how save?

两叶不去,将用斧柯。

2 leaves not cut away, then need axe to axe tree.

是故人君必从事于富。

Therefore Emperor definitely do things to make Country rich.

不富无以为仁,不施无以合亲。

Not make country rich unable to implement Ren (humanity) Government, not give unable to gather close allies.

疏其亲则害,失其众则败。

Away from close allies then harm, lose the people then failure.

无借人利器。

Do not borrow people useful power.

借人利器,则为人所害而不终其正也。”

Borrow people useful power, then become harm by people & unable to govern country.

文王曰:“何谓仁义?”

Sage-King Wen: "what is Ren (humanity) & Righteousness?"

太公曰:“敬其众,合其亲。

Jiang Tai Gong: "respect the people, gather close allies.

敬其众则和,合其亲则喜,是为仁义之纪。

Respect the people then harmony, gather close allies then happy, this is Ren (humanity) & Righteousness principles.

无使人夺汝威。

Do not let others rob your powers.

因其明,顺其常。

Because the observation bright, smooth the always.

顺者任之以德,逆者绝之以力。

Submit persons give virtues, rebel persons destroy with forces.

敬之勿疑,天下和服。”

Respect the above without doubt, under Heaven will obey follow."

 

守国第八 Guard Country Sub-Chapter 8

文王问太公曰:“守国奈何?”

Sage-King Wen asks Jiang Tai Gong: "guard Country how to?"

太公曰:“斋,将语君天地之经,四时所生,仁圣之道,民机之情。"

Jiang Tai Gong: "be vegetarian strict, then tell you Heaven & Earth motion patterns, 4 seasons what born, Ren (humanity) Sage-King of Tao (way), the people change heart reasons."

王斋七日,北面再拜而问之。

Sage-King Wen vegetarian strict for 7 days, north side again bow & ask.

太公曰:“天生四时,地生万物。

Jiang Tai Gong: "Heaven borns 4 seasons, Earth borns all beings.

天下有民,圣人牧之。

Under Heaven has the people, Sage leads them.

故春道生,万物荣;夏道长,万物成;秋道敛,万物盈;冬道藏,万物静。

Therefore Spring Tao (way) borns, everything alive; Summer Tao (way) grows, everything become; Autumn Tao (way) harvests, everything ripe; Winter Tao (way) hides, everything quiet. 

盈则藏,藏则复起。

Ripe then hide, hide then again born.

莫知所终,莫知所始。

Do not know ending, do not know start.

圣人配之,以为天地经纪。

Sage accompany with, use Heaven & Earth patterns as principles.

故天下治,仁圣藏,天下乱,仁圣昌,至道其然也。

Therefore under Heaven well governed, Ren (humanity) Sage hidden, under Heaven chaos, Ren (humanity) Sage many, this is the basic.

圣人之在天地间也,其义固大矣。

Sage within Heaven & Earth, the meaning existence is very big.

因其常而观之,则民安。

Because he always observe & solve, then the people stable live.

夫民动而为机,机动而得失争。

The people moves & become reason, move then has lose & compete powers.

故发之以其阴,会之以其阳。

Therefore the Sage quietly action, when timing ripe will action exposed.

为之先倡,而天下和之。

First to do, & under Heaven follow.

极反其常,莫进而争,莫退而逊。

Move extreme return normal, no advance to compete, no withdraw to let go emperor position.

守国如此,与天地同光。”

Guard Country is like that, with Heaven & Earth same light."

 

上贤第九 Up-Respect Good-Persons Sub-Chapter 9

文王问太公曰:“王人者,何上何下,何取何去,何禁何止?”

Sage-King Wen asks Jiang Tai Gong: "as Emperor, how to up-respect & how to down-disrespect, how to get & how to rid of, how to forbid & how to stop?"

太公曰:“上贤,下不肖。

Jiang Tai Gong: "up-respect good-Persons, down-disrespect no good persons.

取诚信,去诈伪。

Get Sincerity Trustworthiness, rid of lying & faking.

禁暴乱,止奢侈。

Forbid rebellion chaos, stop unnecessary luxury spending.

故王人者有六贼七害。”

Therefore as Emperor has 6 bad things & 7 bad people.

文王曰:“愿闻其道。”

Sage-King Wen: "wish hear the Tao (way)."

太公曰:“夫六贼者:一曰,臣有大作宫室池榭,游观倡乐者,伤王之德。

Jiang Tai Gong: "the 6 bad things: firstly, official has big palace & garden, touring & enjoying, hurt Emperor of virtues.

二曰,民有不事农桑,任气游侠,犯陵法禁,不从吏教者,伤王之化。

Secondly, the people has not doing farming & making clothing, insist wandering, go against laws, do not listen to Officials, hurt Emperor of teachings.

三曰,臣有结朋党,蔽贤智,障主明者,伤王之权。

Thirdly, officials have gangs, blocking good people wisdom, obstacle Emperor bright judgement, hurt Emperor of powers.

四曰,士有抗志高节,以为气势;外交诸侯,不重其主者,伤王之威。

Fourthly, army generals have high ambitions, thinking have capabilities; diplomacy other countries, disregard his Emperor, hurt Emperor of awesomeness.

五曰,臣有轻爵位,贱有司,羞为上犯难者,伤功臣之劳。

Fifthly, officials have look lightly on positions, look down on leadership, ashamed of for upper doing things, hurt doing Officials of hardships.

六曰,强宗侵夺,陵侮贫弱,伤庶人之业。

Sixthly, big family house robbing, bullying the weak, hurt the common people of jobs.

七害者:一曰,无智略权谋,而重赏尊爵之。

7 bad people: firstly, no wisdom & strategy, & look highly on reward positions.

故强勇轻战,侥幸于外,王者谨勿使为将。

Therefore love courage lightly combat, depend on luck, Emperor careful not use as army generals.

二曰,有名无实,出入异言,掩善扬恶,进退为巧,王者谨勿与谋。

Secondly, have name no capabilities, in out different words, hide good tell bad, advance withdraw as like, Emperor careful not discuss strategy with them.

三曰,朴其身躬,恶其衣服,语无为以求名,言无欲以求利,此伪人也,王者谨勿近。

Thirdly, poor the body, hate the clothing, say no action in order to seek name, say no desire to seek benefits, these kinds of fake people, Emperor careful not near.

四曰,奇其冠带,伟其衣服;博闻辩辞,虚论高议,以为容美;穷居静处,而诽时俗,此奸人也,王者谨勿宠。

Fourthly, weird hats & belts, glorify the clothings; broad knowledge debating, theory high sayings, thinking is beautiful; at quiet places, but tell people faults, these are evil people, Emperor careful not love.

五曰,谗佞苟得,以求官爵;果敢轻死,以贪禄秩;不图大事,贪利而动;以高谈虚论,悦于人主,王者谨勿使。

Fifthly, flattery, to seek official position; look lightly on death, to greed position salary; not seek big things, greed benefits then move; use high talk make up sayings, to please emperor, Emperor careful not use.

六曰,为雕文刻镂,技巧华饰,而伤农事,王者必禁。

Sixthly, for stone carving, skillful & elaborate, but hurt farming matters, Emperor must forbid.

七曰,伪方异技,巫蛊左道,不祥之言。

Seventhly, lying schemes, black magic side-lined tao (way), unlucky sayings.

幻惑良民,王者必止之。

Mislead good people, Emperor definitely must stop.

故民不尽力,非吾民也。

Therefore the people who do not give their best efforts, not my people.

士不诚信,非吾士也。

Army Generals not sincerity trustworthiness, not my army generals.

臣不忠谏,非吾臣也。

Big Officials not loyal & upright criticizing, not my big officials.

吏不平洁爱人,非吾吏也。

Officials not fair clean & loving people, not my officials.

相不能富国强兵,调和阴阳,以安万乘之主,正群臣,定名实,明赏罚,乐万民,非吾相也。

Prime Minister not able rich country & strong army, adjust Yin & Yang, to stable 10,000 chariots of Emperor, correct crowd Officials, fix name position, understand rewards & punishments, happy the people, not my prime minister.

夫王者之道,如龙首,高居而远望,深视而审听;示以形,隐其情。

Therefore Sage-King of Tao (way), like dragon head, highly stay & look far, deep see & careful hear; do the appearance, hide the judgements.

若天之高,不可极也;若渊之深,不可测也。

Like sky high, cannot reach; like valley deep, cannot calculate.

故可怒而不怒,奸臣乃作。

Therefore able angry punish not angry punish, evil officials become do.

可杀而不杀,大贼乃发。

Able kill not kill, big robbers become there.

兵势不行,敌国乃强。”

Army strength not action, enemy country become strong.

文王曰:“善哉!”

Sage-King Wen: "goodness!"

 

举贤第十 Elect Good Persons Sub-Chapter 10

文王问太公曰:“君务举贤,而不能获其功。

Sage-King Wen asks Jiang Tai Gong: "I task elect good Persons, but do not get effect.

乱世愈甚,以致危亡者,何也?”

The Country get more chaotic, ending dangerously, why?"

太公曰:“举贤而不用,是有举贤之名而无用贤之实也。”

Jiang Tai Gong: "elect good Persons not use, only have elect good Persons name & no use good Persons practical."

文王曰:“其失安在?”

Sage-King Wen: "where do I go mistake?"

太公曰:“其失在君好用世俗之所誉而不得其贤也。”

Jiang Tai Gong: "the mistake is you love use persons the world loves & not get the good Persons."

文王曰:“何如?”

Sage-King Wen: "why?"

太公曰:“君以世俗之所誉者为贤,以世俗所毁为不肖。

Jiang Tai Gong: "if you use what the world loves as good persons, what the world hates as bad persons.

则多党者进,少党者退。

Then many gang people person advances, few gang people person withdraw.

若是则群邪比周而蔽贤,忠臣死于无罪,奸臣以虚誉取爵位。

This is so then crowd evil gather & hinder good Persons, loyal Officials die on no wrong, evil officials use fake reputation get official positions.

是以乱愈甚,则国不免危也。”

Therefore the Country become more chaotic, & the Country therefore in danger.

文王曰:“举贤奈何?”

Sage-King Wen: "how to elect good Persons?"

太公曰:“将相分职,而各以官名举人。

Jiang Tai Gong: "army Generals & Ministers post divide official posts, & each use official posts names to elect good Persons.

按名督实,选才考能,令实当其能,名当其实,则得举贤之道也。”

According official post name seek actual, exam candidates test capabilities, make sure get right capabilities, name get practical, it is then elect good Persons of Tao (way)."

 

赏罚第十一 Reward Punishment Sub-Chapter 11

文王问太公曰:“赏所以存劝,罚所以示惩。

Sage-King Wen asks Jiang Tai Gong: "reward is able have motivation, punishment is able have warning.

吾欲赏一以劝百,罚一以惩众,为之奈何?”

I wish reward one to motivate hundred, punishment one to warn crowd, how to do?"

太公曰:“凡用赏者贵信,用罚者贵必。

Jiang Tai Gong: "when using reward is valuable at trustworthy, when using punishment is valuable at definitely.

赏信罚必于耳目之所闻见,则不闻见者莫不阴化矣。

If reward trustworthy & punish definitely at what ears & eyes can see, then what cannot see & hear also transform.

夫诚畅于天地,通于神明,而况于人乎。”

You sincere through Heaven & Earth, reach the gods, least say the people."

 

兵道第十二 Soldiers Tao (Way) Sub-Chapter 12

武王问太公曰:“兵道何如?”

Sage-King Wu asks Jiang Tai Gong: "use soldiers Tao (way) how?"

太公曰:“凡兵之道,莫过于一。

Jiang Tai Gong: "all use soldiers of Tao (way), all not more than concentration one.

一者能独往独来。

Concentration one able to come & go at will.

黄帝曰:一者,阶于道,几于神。

Sage-King Huang Di says: concentration one is, advancing of Tao (way), near like a god.

用之在于机,显之在于势,成之在于君。

Use of in the opportunity, express of in the situation, success of rest on Emperor.

故圣王号兵为凶器,不得已而用之。

Therefore Sage-King calls soldiers as bad weapons, only use when necessary.

今商王知存而不知亡,知乐而不知殃。

Today Shang king know existence do not collapse-die, know pleasure do not know disasters.

夫存者非存,在于虑亡。

Person existence not purely on existence, rest on worry collapse-die.

乐者非乐,在于虑殃。

Person pleasure not purely on pleasure, rest on worry disasters.

今王已虑其源,岂忧其流乎。”

Today you Sage-King already worry the source, need not worry about the ends.

武王曰:“两军相遇,彼不可来,此不可往,各设固备,未敢先发。

Sage-King Wu: "two armies meet, he unable come, I unable go, each setup strong defense, dare not first advance.

我欲袭之,不得其利,为之奈何?”

I wish to attack, not get advantage, how to do?"

太公曰:“外乱而内整,示饥而实饱,内精而外纯,一合一离,一聚一散,阴其谋,密其机,高其垒,伏其锐,士寂若无声,敌不知我所备。

Jiang Tai Gong: "outside chaos but inside organized, look hungry but actually full, inside concentration but outside look blunt, sometime unite sometime disunite, sometime gather sometime away, hide the strategy, secret the opportunity, high the defense, hide the sharp army, soldiers quiet no sound, enemy not know what we ready.

欲其西,袭其东。”

Wish to attack west, attack the east."

武王曰:”敌知我情,通我谋,为之奈何?”

Sage-King Wu: "enemy know our intelligence, realize our planning, then how?"

太公曰:“兵胜之术,密察敌人之机而速乘其利,复疾击其不意。”

Jiang Tai Gong: "soldiers win of arts, is in secretly observe attack enemy opportunity & fast take advantage, repeatedly attack the unexpected."

 

第二篇武韬 Chapter 2 Military Strategy

发启第十三 Inspiring Sub-Chapter 13

文王在丰,召太公曰:“鸣呼!商王虐极,罪杀不辜,公尚助予忧民,如何?”

Sage-King Wen at Place Feng, ask for Jiang Tai Gong: "ah! King Shang cruel to extreme, sin kill the innocent, you should help me to save the people, how?"

太公曰:“王其修德,以下贤惠民。

Jiang Tai Gong: "you King should cultivate virtue, use it below on good Officers & do good to the people.

以观天道,天道无殃,不可先倡。

Use it to observe Heaven Tao (way), Heaven Tao (way) no disaster, do not first start war.

人道无灾,不可先谋。

Human Tao (way) no disaster, do not first plan war.

必见天殃,又见人灾,乃可以谋。

Definitely see Heaven disasters, again see human disasters, then able plan war.

必见其阳,又见其阴,乃知其心。

Definitely see the Yang (obvious), again see the Yin (hidden), then able know the heart.

必见其外,又见其内,乃知其意。

Definitely see the outside, again see the inside, then know the meaning.

必见其疏,又见其亲,乃知其情。

Definitely see who distance, again see who close, then know the situation.

行其道,道可致也。

Action the Tao (way), Tao (way) can reach.

从其门,门可入也。

From the door, door able enter.

立其礼,礼可成也。

Setup the Rites, Rites able complete.

争其强,强可胜也。

Fight the strong, the strong can win over.

全胜不斗,大兵无创,与鬼神通,微哉微哉。

All win without fight, many soldiers no hurt, with ghosts & gods through, wonder & wonder.

与人同病相救,同情相成,同恶相助,同好相趋,故无甲兵而胜,无冲机而攻,无沟堑而守。

With the people same sickness save each other, same feeling complete each other, same hate help each other, same love push each other, therefore no armour soldiers able win, no armour tanks able attack, no drain trenches able defend.

大智不智,大谋不谋,大勇不勇,大利不利。

Big wisdom no wisdom, big planning no planning, big courage no courage, big benefit no benefit.

利天下者,天下启之;害天下者,天下闭之。

Benefit under Heaven person, under Heaven inspires with; harm under Heaven person, under Heaven abandons with.

天下者,非一人之天下,乃天下之天下。

Under Heaven, not one person under Heaven, is under Heaven belonging under Heaven.

取天下者,若逐野兽,而天下皆有分肉之心。

To take under Heaven person, like chasing wild animals, and with under Heaven want to split meat heart.

若同舟而济,济则皆同其利,败则皆同其害。

Like same boat crossing river, cross over all get benefit, failure all same harms.

然则皆有以启之,无有闭之也。

Do these then all will inspire him, no one will abandon him.

无取于民者,取民者也。

No take on the people, get the people.

无取民者民利之;无取国者国利之;无取天下者天下利之。

No take on the people the people use with; no take on countries countries use with; no take on under Heaven under Heaven use with.

故道在不可见,事在不可闻,胜在不可知,微哉微哉。

Therefore Tao (way) is in cannot see, things is in cannot hear, winning is in cannot know, wonder & wonder.

鸷鸟将击,卑飞敛翼,猛兽将搏,弭耳俯伏。

Fierce birds about to attack, will low fly shorten wings, wild animals about to attack, will close ear lie low.

圣有将动,必有愚色。

Sage about to move, definitely has stupid looks.

今彼有商,众口相惑。

Today have Dynasty shang, many mouths lie each other.

纷纷渺渺,好色无极。

Chaos, & Shang king love sex no end.

此亡国之征也。

This is die country symptoms.

吾观其野,草营胜谷。

I observe their farmlands, grass more than rice plants.

吾观其众,邪曲胜直。

I observe their population, evil bend more then upright.

吾观其吏,暴虐残疾。

I observe their officials, cruel to extreme.

败法乱刑上下不觉。

Failed laws wrong punishments up down do not know.

此亡国之时也。

This is die country time.

大明发而万物皆照。

Big light come & all things all get shine.

大义发而万物皆利。

Big Righteousness emit & all things get benefits.

大兵发而万物皆服。

Big Soldiers start war & all things submit.

大哉圣人之德。

Big is the Sage's virtues.

独闻独见,乐哉。”

His unique hear & unique see, make happiness.

 

文启第十四 Composition Inspiration Sub-Chapter 14

文王问太公曰:“圣人何守?”

Sage-King Wen ask Jiang Tai Gong: "Sage has what principles?"

太公曰:“何忧何啬,万物皆得。

Jiang Tai Gong: "he no need to worry no need to save, all things all get.

何啬何忧,万物皆道。

No need to save no need to worry, all things get their Tao (way).

政之所施,莫知其化。

Government policy when administer, do not it is working.

时之所行,莫知其移。

When time to execute, do not know what it does.

圣人守此而万物化。

A Sage follow these principles & all things become.

何穷之有。

What ending it has.

终而复始,优而游之。

End & repeat start, best is flow with.

展转求之,求而得之,不可不藏。

Repeat thinking, seek & get, unable not to hide.

既已藏之,不可不行。

Since hide, unable not action.

既以行之,勿复明之。

Since action with, not repeat tell public.

夫天地不自明,故能长生。

Therefore Heaven & Earth do not self explain, therefore able long live.

圣人不自明,故能名彰。

A Sage do not self explain, therefore able reputation famous.

古之圣人,聚人而为家,聚家而为国,聚国而为天下。

Ancient Sage, gather people to become families, gather families to become countries, gather countries to become under Heaven.

分封贤人,以为万国,命之曰大纪。

Divide elect good people, to become thousands of countries, is named as big Government.

陈其政教,顺其民俗,群曲化直,变于形容。

Spread its government teachings, flow with people customs, all wrongdoings become corrected, all flow like wind.

万国不通,各乐其所,人爱其上,命之曰大定。

Thousands countries different, each happy at their own things, love people is top priority, is named as big Stability.

鸣呼!圣人务静之,贤人务正之;愚人不能正,故与人争。

Oh! A Sage stress on quiet doing, a Sub-Sage stress on correct self to correct people; stupid people unable to correct self, therefore fight with people.

上劳则刑繁,刑繁则民忧,民忧则流亡。

Up Emperor do too much then punishments many, punishments many then people worry, people worry then wander away.

上下不安其生,累世不休,命之曰大失。

Up & down not stable at its living, total chaos, is named as big Loss.

天下之人如流水,障之则止,启之则行,静之则清。

Under Heaven of people is like flowing water, stop it make it stop, inspire it make it move, quiet with make it clear.

鸣呼神哉。

How amazing.

圣人见其始,则知其终。”

A Sage see the start, then know the ending."

文王曰:“静之奈何?”

Sage-King Wen: "how to quiet?"

太公曰:“天有常形,民有常生。

Jiang Tai Gong: "Heaven has always shape, the people has always living.

与天下共其生,而天下静矣。

With under Heaven share the living, then under Heaven become quiet.

太上因之,其次化之。

Best is based on people heart, next is change people heart.

夫民化而从政,是以天无为而成事,民无与而自富。

The people change then follow government, is using no action to accomplish things, the people not involve & self rich.

此圣人之德也。”

This is a Sage of virtues."

文王曰:“公言乃协予怀,夙夜念之不忘,以用为常。”

Sage-King Wen: "what you say is what I feel, will day night think & not forget, to use as governing principles.
