1) 子曰：「學而時習之，不亦說乎？有朋自遠方來，不亦樂乎？人不知而不慍，不亦君子乎？」
Confucius: "learnt & often practice, isn't it say? Have friends from afar, isn't it happy? Person not know & not angry with, isn't it Gentleman?"
2) 有子曰：「其為人也孝弟，而好犯上者鮮矣。不好犯上，而好作亂者，未之有也。君子務本，本立而道生。孝弟也者，其為仁之本與？」
Student You Zi: "those who are filial & brotherhood, & like to offend superior are few. Not like to offend superior, & like create rebellion, unheard of. Gentleman concentrate foundation, foundation make then Tao (everything) possible. Filial & brotherhood both, isn't it Ren (humanity) Foundation?"
3) 子曰：「巧言令色，鮮矣仁。」
Confucius: "flattery words & acting expression, few reach Ren."
4) 曾子曰：「吾日三省吾身：為人謀，而不忠乎？與朋友交，而不信乎？傳，不習乎？」
Student Zeng Zi: "I daily 3 reflection on self: working for people, is it faithful? Mixing with friends, is it trustful? Teachings from Master, still revising?"
5) 子曰：「道千乘之國，敬事而信，節用而愛人，使民以時。」
Confucius: "to govern big country, treat tasks with faithfulness, cut costs & love people, use population people at right time."
6) 子曰：「弟子入則孝，出則弟，謹而信，汎愛眾，而親仁。行有餘力，則以學文。」
Confucius: "Students in filial, out brotherhood, careful & trustworthy, love everyone, nearing Ren. After extra efforts, then can learn Classics."
7) 子夏曰：「賢賢易色；事父母能竭其力；事君能致其身；與朋友交，言而有信：雖曰未學，吾必謂之學矣。」
Student Zi Xia: "good good avoid sex; care parents to best; duty superior can further self; with friends, words are trustworthy = although self-say unlearned, I say already learned."
8) 子曰：「君子不重則不威，學則不固。主忠信；無友不如己者。過則勿憚改。」
Confucius: "Gentleman not serious not scary, learning become not solid. Stress loyalty trustworthiness; no friend less worthy than self. Have mistake not afraid correct."
9) 曾子曰：「慎終追遠，民德歸厚矣。」
Student Zeng Zi: "respect long dead parents, population people become virtuous."
10) 子禽問於子貢曰：「夫子至於是邦也，必聞其政，求之與？」子貢曰：「夫子溫、良、恭、儉、讓以得之。夫子之求之也，其諸異乎人之求之與！」
Student Qin asks Student Gong: "Teacher Confucius every country he goes, surely get country government info, He asks or given?" Student Gong: "Teacher Confucius is nice, good, courteous, thrifty, humble to get them. Different from other people able to get!"
11) 子曰：「父在觀其志，父沒觀其行。三年無改於父之道，可謂孝矣。」
Student: "father around see ambition, father not around see action done. 3 years not change father Tao (everything), is Filial."
12) 有子曰：「禮之用，和為貴；先王之道，斯為美，小大由之。有所不行，知和而和，不以禮節之，亦不可行也。」
Student You Zi: "Rite use, harmony most important; Ancient Sage-King Tao (way), all to perfection, both small & big all. Anything not possible, know harmony become harmony, not using Rites, then not possible."
13) 有子曰：「信近於義，言可復也；恭近於禮，遠恥辱也。因不失其親，亦可宗也。」
Student You Zi: "Trustworthiness near Righteousness, words can fulfill; Respectful near Rites, away from humiliation. Because no lose loving people, therefore people pray to."
14) 子曰：「君子食無求飽，居無求安，敏於事而慎於言；就有道而正焉；可謂好學也已。」
Confucius: "Gentleman eat not ask full, house not ask comfortable, hardworking in works & careful in words; will have Tao to correct self; known as very willing to learn."
15) 子夏曰：「貧而無諂，富而無驕，何如？」子曰：「可也；未若貧而樂，富而好禮者也。」子夏曰：「詩云：『如切如磋，如琢如磨。』其斯之謂與！」子曰：「賜也，始可與言詩已矣！告諸往而知來者。」
Student Zi Xia: "poor no give-flattery, rich no proud, how?" Confucius: "can, but lose poor but happy, rich but love-Rites." Student Xia: "Poem Scripture says grind & grind, improve & improve. 16) 子曰：「不患人之不己知，患不知人也。」

2) 子曰：「詩三百，一言以蔽之，曰：『思無邪。』」

3) 子曰：「道之以政，齊之以刑，民免而無恥。道之以德，齊之以禮，有恥且格。」
Confucius: "everything use government, control using punishments, population people don't but without shame. Everything use virtues, control using rites, have shame & character."
4) 子曰：「吾十有五而至於學；三十而立；四十而不惑；五十而知天命；六十而耳順；七十而從心所欲，不踰矩。」
Confucius: "I age 15 goal on studying; 30 realize goal; 40 without a doubt; 50 know Heaven Mandate; 60 know what to listen; 70 heart anything I like, not against Laws."
5) 孟懿子問孝。子曰：「無違。」樊遲御，子告之曰：「孟孫問孝於我，我對曰：『無違。』」樊遲曰：「何謂也？」子曰：「生，事之以禮。死，葬之以禮，祭之以禮。」
Someone Meng Yi Zi asks about Filial. Confucius: "not against." Student Chi drives, Confucius instructs: "Meng asks me Filial, I answer not against." Student Chi: "why?" Confucius: "alive, do according Rites. Dead, bury according Rites, remember-pray according Rites."
6) 孟武伯問孝。子曰：「父母唯其疾之憂。」
Someone Meng Wu Bo asks about Filial. Confucius: "parents care only us when we ill."
7) 子游問孝。子曰：「今之孝者，是謂能養。至於犬馬，皆能有養，不敬，何以別乎？」
Student Zi You asks about Filial. Confucius: "today Filial, only about feeding. Same as dog & horse, all have feeding, if no respect, what the difference?"
8) 子夏問孝。子曰：「色難。有事，弟子服其勞，有酒食，先生饌，曾是以為孝乎？」
Student Zi Xia asks Filial. Confucius: "facial expressions most difficult. Have things, juniors take care, have foods, give seniors eat, is that all to Filial?"
9) 子曰：「吾與回終日，不違如愚；退而省其私，亦足以發。回也，不愚！」
Confucius: "I teach Student Hui whole day, no against like stupid, he leaves & correct weakness, enough to practical. Student Hui, is not stupid!"
10) 子曰：「視其所以，觀其所由，察其所安，人焉廋哉？人焉廋哉？」
Confucius: "see what person does, observe what motives from, analyze what not-nervous with, person how to hide? Person how to hide?"
11) 子曰：「溫故而知新，可以為師矣。」
Confucius: "revise old & know new, can become teacher."
12) 子曰：「君子不器。」
Confucius: "Gentleman no-fixed functions."
13) 子貢問君子。子曰：「先行其言，而後從之。」
Student Zi Gong asks about Gentleman. Confucius: "do before say, then follow through."
14) 子曰：「君子周而不比，小人比而不周。」
Confucius: "Gentleman for all & not compare, small person compare & not for all."
15) 子曰：「學而不思則罔，思而不學則殆。」
Confucius: "learn without thinking become confused, thinking without learning become dangerous."
16) 子曰：「攻乎異端，斯害也已。」
Confucius: "attack too much radical, self become radical & harm self."
17) 子曰：「由，誨女，知之乎！知之為知之，不知為不知，是知也。」
Confucius: "Student Zi Lu, what I teach, do you know! Know means know, not know means not know, is know."
18) 子張學干祿。子曰：「多聞闕疑，慎言其餘，則寡尤；多見闕殆，慎行其餘，則寡悔。言寡尤，行寡悔，祿在其中矣。」
Student Zi Zhang learns getting official post. Confucius: "learn more less doubt, careful words excess, thereby less resentment; see more less danger, careful actions excess, thereby less regret. Talk less resentment, actions less regret, confirm can have official post."
19) 哀公問曰：「何為則民服？」孔子對曰：「舉直錯諸枉，則民服；舉枉錯諸直，則民不服。」
Emperor Ai asks: "how get population people support?" Confucius answers: "elect upright people to rid all wrongs, people support. elect wrong people to rid all rights, people do not support."
20)季康子問：「使民敬忠以勸，如之何？」子曰：「臨之以莊，則敬；孝慈，則忠；舉善而教不能則勸。」
Official Li asks: "making population people respectful, loyal & guiding each other, how to?" Confucius: "the Emperor must be strict conduct, thereby get respect. Must be filial loving, thereby get loyalty. Elect good people teaching less capable, thereby get guiding each other."
21)或謂孔子曰：「子奚不為政？」子曰：「書云：『孝乎惟孝，友于兄弟。』施於有政，是亦為政，奚其為為政？」
Someone asks Confucius: "why aren't you in government?" Confucius: "Book Scripture: those who can filial, will brotherhood friend. Giving advice to government, is like in government, why say aren't in government."
22) 子曰：「人而無信，不知其可也。大車無輗，小車無輗，其何以行之哉？」
Confucius: "person no trustworthiness, do not know how to live along. Like big cart no axle to pull, like small cart no axle to pull, how to move?"
23) 子張問：「十世可知也？」子曰：「殷因於夏禮，所損益可知也。周因於殷禮，所損益可知也。其或繼周者，雖百世可知也。」
Student Zi Zhang asks: "future 10 generations can know?" Confucius: "Dynasty Yin inherits Dynasty Xia rites, addition & subtraction can know. Dynasty Zhou inherits Dynasty Yin rites, addition & subtraction can know. Thereafter after Dynasty Zhou, even 100 generations can also know."
24) 子曰：「非其鬼而祭之，諂也。見義不為，無勇也。」
Confucius: "respect-pray ghost not supposed to = give-flattery. See righteous & not do = no courage."
1) 孔子謂季氏：「八佾舞於庭，是可忍也，孰不可忍也？」
Confucius about king li: "Heaven Emperor Music in your court, am I supposed to endure, or not to endure?"
2) 三家者以雍。子曰：「『相維辟公，天子穆穆。』奚取於三家之堂？」
3 houses use Heaven Emperor Funeral Rites to pray. Confucius: "houses should help pray, Heaven Emperor quietly prays in Rites. Should be used in 3 houses household?"
3) 子曰：「人而不仁，如禮何？人而不仁，如樂何？」
Confucius: "person not Ren (humanity), how to Rites? The person not Ren (humanity), how to Music?"
4) 林放問禮之本。 子曰：「大哉問！禮，與其奢也，寧儉喪，與其易也，寧戚。」
Someone Lin asks Rites Foundation. Confucius: "good question! Rites, instead spending lots, better low cost funeral, instead elaborate, better real feelings."
5) 子曰：「夷狄之有君，不如諸夏之亡也。」
Confucius: "barbarian country has emperor but no rites system, cannot compare with dying Dynasty Xia with Rites System."
6) 季氏旅於泰山。子謂冉有曰：「女弗能救與？」對曰：「不能。」子曰：「鳴呼！曾謂泰山不如林放乎？」
The king li to pray Tai Mountain. Confucius to Student Ran: "you able to save situation?" Student Ran answers: "not able." Confucius: "Heaven! Does Tai Mountain not know Rites as Someone Lin?"
7) 子曰：「君子無所爭，必也射乎！揖讓而升，下而飲，其爭也君子。」
Confucius: "Gentlemen no competition, only in archery competition. Bow & archery, finish & drink, such fair play is Gentlemen."
8) 子夏問曰：「『巧笑倩兮，美目盼兮，素以為絢兮。』何謂也？」子曰：「繪事後素。」曰：「禮後乎？」子曰：「起予者商也，始可喻與言詩已矣。」
Student Zi Xia asks: "clever smile very beautiful, beautiful eyes very clear, draw using colours. What that means?" Confucius: "plain draw then colours." Student Xia: "like Cultivation then Rites?" Confucius: "you are able to intellect me, can begin talk poems with you."
9) 子曰：「夏禮，吾能言之，杞不足徵也。殷禮，吾能言之，宋不足徵也。文獻不足故也。足，則吾能徵之矣。」
Confucius: "Dynasty Xia Rites System, I can say out, but what left country qi cannot prove my say out. Dynasty Yin Rites System, I can say out, but what left country song cannot prove my say out. Their history records not enough. If enough, then I am able to prove what I say out."
10) 子曰：「禘自既灌而往者，吾不欲觀之矣。」
Confucius: "emperor from emptying wines & after that praying to ancestors, I do not want to continue seeing (because no sincerity)."
11) 或問「禘」之說。子曰：「不知也。知其說者之於天下也，其如示諸斯乎？」指其掌。
Someone asks "Heaven Emperor" Rites. Confucius: "I do not know. Know only that whoever can control the Worlds under Heaven, know to that person easy like this." Looking at his palm.
12) 祭如在；祭神如神在。子曰：「吾不與祭，如不祭。」
Praying like Ancestors are there; praying like gods are there. Confucius: "if I do not involve praying, like I not praying."
13) 王孫賈問曰：「『與其媚於奧，寧媚於竈。」何謂也？」子曰：「不然！獲罪於天，無所禱也。」
The official wang: "instead asking main god, why not ask side god. How?" Confucius: "not right! If sin against Heaven, pray to nothing will help."
14) 子曰：「周監於二代，郁郁乎文哉！吾從周。」
Confucius: "Dynasty Zhou Rites System comes from previous 2 Dynasties, more better! I follow Dynasty Zhou."
15) 子入大廟，每事問。或曰：「孰謂鄹人之子知禮乎？入大廟，每事問。」子聞之曰「是禮也！」
Confucius enter big Temple, everything asks. Someone: "that Confucius really knows Rites? Enter big Temple, everything asks." Confucius heard answers: "that is Rites!"
16) 子曰：「射不主皮，為力不同科，古之道也。」
Confucius: "archery main thing not on target, as persons' strength differ, ancient customs."
17) 子貢欲去告朔之餼羊。子曰：「賜也！爾愛其羊，我愛其禮。」
Student Gou wants to rid praying of goat. Confucius: "Student! You love the goat, I love the Rite."
18) 子曰：「事君盡禮，人以為諂也。」
Confucius: "administrating superior everything Rites, people think flattery doing."
19) 定公問：「君使臣，臣事君，如之何？」孔子對曰：「君使臣以禮，臣事君以忠。」
Emperor Ding: "emperor use ministers, ministers work-for emperor, how?" Confucius: "Emperor use Ministers according Rites, Ministers work-for Emperor according Loyalty."
20) 子曰：「關雎，樂而不淫，哀而不傷。」
Confucius: "Poem mating birds, happy but no adultery, sorrow but no hurt."
21) 哀公問社於宰我。宰我對曰：「夏后氏以松；殷人以柏；周人以栗，曰：『使民戰栗。』」子聞之曰：「成事不說，遂事不諫，既往不咎。」
Emperor Ai asks Official Zai about Rite wood. Official Zai answers: "Dynasty Xia uses song wood; Dynasty Yin uses bo wood; Dynasty Zhou uses li wood, it is said to make population people afraid of li wood." Confucius hears & says: "done need not say, wronged need not advice, what done is done."
22) 子曰：「管仲之器小哉！」或曰：「管仲儉乎？」曰：「管氏有三歸，官事不攝，焉得儉？」「然則管仲知禮乎？」曰：「邦君樹塞門，管氏亦樹塞門。邦君為兩君之好有反坫，管氏亦有反坫。管氏而知禮，孰不知禮？」
Confucius: "person guan vessel is small!" Someone: "you mean he is thrifty?" Confucius: "person guan has 3 housekeeper, every keeper not suitable, how can be thrifty?" "but person guan know rites?" Confucius: "only Emperor can have house gate, person guan a prime minister also has house gate. Emperor has house partition for fellow Emperors, person guan also has. If he knows rites, who doesn't know rites?"
23) 子語魯大師樂，曰：「樂，其可知也。始作，翕如也；從之，純如也，曒如也，繹如也，以成。」
Confucius tells Country Lu Music Minister: "Music, can be known. Starting, tones forming; after-that, harmony forming, loud forming, endless forming, to complete."
24) 儀封人請見，曰：「君子之至於斯也，吾未嘗不得見也。」從者見之。出曰：「二三子，何患於喪乎？天下之無道也久矣，天將以夫子為木鐸。」
Someone Yi comes & says: "Gentleman here, why do not see me." After seeing. Says: "you Confucius Students, why worry no Official post? The Worlds under Heaven lost Tao very long, Heaven will use Teacher Confucius as a Warning Bell."
25) 子謂韶：盡美矣，又盡善也。謂武：盡美矣，未盡善也。
Confucius says Sage-King Shun who gives Kingdom: perfect character, perfect doing. Says Sage-King Wu who does not give Kingdom: perfect character, not perfect doing.
26) 子曰：「居上不寬，為禮不敬，臨喪不哀，吾何以觀之哉？」
Confucius: "top person not forgiving, do rites not respectful, when funeral not sorrow, how well can I see him?"
1) 子曰：「里仁為美。擇不處仁，焉得知？」
Confucius: "living Ren (humanity) is happiness. Choose not to live in Ren, how to wise?"
2) 子曰：「不仁者，不可以久處約，不可以長處樂。仁者安仁；知者利仁。」
Confucius: "not Ren person, cannot long in poverty, cannot long in happiness. Ren Person content in Ren; Wise Person produce in Ren."
3) 子曰：「唯仁者，能好人，能惡人。」
Confucius: "only Ren Person, can love people, can hate people."
4) 子曰：「茍志於仁矣，無惡也。」
Confucius: "very determined in Ren, will no evil."
5) 子曰：「富與貴，是人之所欲也，不以其道得之，不處也。貧與賤，是人之所惡也，不以其道得之，不去也。君子去仁，惡乎成名？君子無終食之間違仁；造次必於是，顛沛必於是。」
Confucius: "rich & high-class, is what everyone wants, not by righteous way, not supposed. Poor & low-class, is what everyone hates, not by righteous way, not rid. A gentleman rids Ren, evil how to name Gentleman? Gentleman no short time between meals against Ren; hurry doing also is, bad lucks also is."
6) 子曰：「我未見好仁者，惡不仁者。好仁者，無以尚之；惡不仁者，其為仁矣，不使不仁者加乎其身。有能一日用其力於仁矣乎？我未見力不足者。蓋有之矣，我未之見也！」
Confucius: "I have not seen a love Ren Person, hate no-Ren Person. Love Ren Person, nothing can surpass; hate no-Ren Person, sure becomes Ren, will not let no-Ren thing on Himself. Able to have 1 day efforts near Ren? I have not seen hardworking enough Person. Maybe have, but I have not seen!"
7) 子曰：「人之過也，各於其黨。觀過，斯知仁矣。」
Confucius: "person's mistake, can be classified. See mistake, can know how Ren is he."
8) 子曰：「朝聞道，夕死可矣！」
Confucius: "morning hear Tao (way), evening die no problem!"
9) 子曰：「士志於道，而恥惡衣惡食者，未足與議也！」
Confucius: "a Jedi determined in Tao (everything), but shameful of poor clothes & poor foods, not worthy to talk with!"
10) 子曰：「君子之於天下也，無適也，無莫也，義之與比。」
Confucius: "Gentleman treating things Worlds under Heaven, no yes-yes, no no-no, righteous is standard."
11) 子曰：「君子懷德，小人懷土。君子懷刑，小人懷惠。」
Confucius: "Gentleman remembers people gratitudes, small person remembers own benefits. Gentleman remembers Country Laws, small person remembers personal gains."
12) 子曰：「放於利而行，多怨。」
Confucius: "lose behaviours to benefits & do, many resentments."
13) 子曰：「能以禮讓為國乎，何有？不能以禮讓為國，如禮何？」
Confucius: "can polite in governing country, what difficult? Cannot polite in governing country, what Rites is there?"
14) 子曰：「不患無位，患所以立。不患莫己知，求為可知也。」
Confucius: "not trouble of no Official Post, trouble not learned. Not trouble no one knows you, go capable to be known."
15) 子曰：「參乎！吾道一以貫之。」曾子曰：「唯。」子出，門人問曰：「何謂也？」曾子曰：「夫子之道，忠恕而已矣！」
Confucius: "Student Zeng! My Tao (everything) is based on ONE POINT." Student Zeng: "WHAT THE." Student Zeng out room, fellow Students ask: "what's that Point?" Student Zeng: "Teacher Confucius's Tao (everything), Loyalty & Caring only!"
16) 子曰：「君子唯於義，小人唯於利。」
Confucius: "Gentleman only knows Righteousness, small person only knows benefits."
17) 子曰：「見賢思齊焉，見不賢而內自省也。」
Confucius: "see Capable thinking to same, see not capable self-reflecting whether I am also."
18) 子曰：「事父母，幾諫；見志不從，又敬不違，勞而不怨。」
Confucius: "administer parents, softly correct; see disagreements, respect & no disobedience, do tired but no resentment."
19) 子曰：「父母在，不遠遊；遊必有方。」
Confucius: "parents around, no distance travel; travel must tell."
20) 子曰：「三年無改於父之道，可謂孝矣。」
Confucius: "3 years no change father's doing, can consider Filial."
21) 子曰：「父母之年，不可不知也：一則以喜，一則以懼。」
Confucius: "parents' age, cannot not know: know is happy, know is also worry."
22) 子曰：「古者言之不出，恥躬之不逮也。」
Confucius: "Ancient People words seldom out, shameful if unable to fulfill."
23) 子曰：「以約失之者，鮮矣！」
Confucius: "Person who restrictions on wrongs, mistake few!"
24) 子曰：「君子欲訥於言，而敏於行。」
Confucius: "Gentleman quiet in words, many on doing."
25) 子曰：「德不孤，必有鄰。」
Confucius: "Virtuous not lonely, 100% have neighbours."
26) 子游曰：「事君數，斯辱矣。朋友數，斯疎矣。」
Student Zi You: "administering superior too hurry, will get scolding. Make friends too hurry, will get distance."
1) 子謂：公治長，可妻也，雖在縲絏之中，非其罪也。以其子妻之。
Confucius: Student Gong Zhi, can marry daughter to, although He been in prison, not really his fault. Confucius marries his daughter to him.
2) 子謂：南容，邦有道不廃，邦無道免於刑戮。以其兄之妻之。
Confucius: Student Nan Rong, when Country has Tao (virtues) He becomes useful, when country has no Tao (virtues) He get no punishments. Confucius marries his brother's daughter to him.
3) 子謂：子賤，君子哉若人！魯無君子者，斯焉取斯？
Confucius: Student Zi Jian, Gentleman is like him! If Country Lu do not have Gentleman, then how he learned from?
4) 子貢問曰：「賜也何如？」子曰：「女器也。」曰：「何器也？」曰：「瑚璉也。」
Student Zi Gong asks: "how am I?" Confucius: "you like a Vessel." "hat kind of Vessel?" Confucius: "like a valuable Temple Vessel."
5) 或曰：「雍也，仁而不佞。」子曰：「焉用佞？禦人以口給，屢憎於人。不知其仁，焉用佞？」
Someone says: "person Yong, Ren (humanity) but unable to speak." Confucius: "why needs speaking? Use speaking to defend, bring hatred on others. Not know Ren (humanity), what use is speaking?"
6) 子使漆雕開仕。對曰：「吾斯之未能信。」子說。
Confucius wants Student Qi Li Shi to go Official Post. He: "I am not well learned enough to qualify." Confucius very happy.
7) 子曰：「道不行，乘桴浮於海，從我者，其由與？」子路聞之喜。子曰：「由也，好勇過我，無所取材。」
Confucius a bit gives up: "Tao cannot implement, might as well float on wood on sea, see what happens, Student Zi Lu wants to come?" Student Zi Lu heard & become very happy. Confucius: "Student Zi Lu, your courage is higher than me, but it is not something useful of."
8) 孟武伯問：「子路仁乎？」子曰：「不知也。」又問。子曰：「由也，千乘之國，可使治其賦也；不知其仁也。」「求也何如？」子曰：「求也，千室之邑，百乘之家，可使為之宰也；不知其仁也。」「赤也何如？」子曰：「赤也，束帶立於朝，可使與賓客言也；不知其仁也。」
Someone Meng Wu Bo: "is Student Zi Lu Ren (humanity)?" Confucius: "I do not know." Asks again. Confucius: "Student Zi Lu, 1000 units Country, he is able to rule its military; but I not know he is near Ren (humanity)." "Student Qiu how?" Confucius: "Student Qiu, 1000 households city, 100 units House, he is able to be Administrator; but I not know he is near Ren (humanity)." "Student Chi how?" Confucius: "Student Chi, wear robe in Government Court, he is able to talk to guests; but I not know he is near Ren (humanity)."
9) 子謂子貢曰：「女與回也孰愈？」對曰：「賜也何敢望回！回也聞一以知十，賜也聞一以知二。」子曰：「弗如也，吾與女弗如也。」
Confucius asks Student Zi Gong: "you & Student Yan Hui who is better?" Student Zi Gong answers: "I dare not compare with Student Yan Hui! He hears 1 knows 10, I hear 1 only know 2." Confucius: "yes you cannot compare, I & you also cannot compare."
10) 宰予晝寢。子曰：「朽木不可雕也，糞土之牆，不可杇也。於予與何誅！」子曰：「始吾於人也，廳其言而信其行；今吾於人也，聽其言而觀其行。於予與改是！」
Student Zai Yu day sleeping. Confucius: "rotten wood cannot engrave, shit wall, cannot be paint. Because of scolding him!" Confucius: "last time I treat people, hear their words believe follow actions; now I treat people, hear their words must see actions. Because of him!"
11) 子曰：「吾未見剛者！」或對曰：「申棖。」子曰：「棖也慾，焉得剛？」
Confucius: "I never seen a strong person!" Someone answers: "Shen Cheng." Confucius: "Shen Cheng has desires, how can be strong?"
12) 子貢曰：「我不欲人之加諸我也，吾亦欲無加諸人。」子曰：「賜也，非爾所及也！」
Student Zi Gong: "things I do not want on me, I will not on people." Confucius: "good, this is not you can immediately do!"
13) 子貢曰：「夫子之文章，可得而聞也。夫子之言性與天道，不可得而聞也。」
Student Zi Gong: "Teacher Confucius's words, I receive hear. Teacher Confucius's Human Nature Teachings and Heaven Tao, I cannot receive hear."
14) 子路有聞，未之能行，唯恐有聞。
Student Zi Lu has heard, afraid cannot do, afraid has heard.
15) 子貢問曰：「孔文子何以謂之文也？」子曰：「敏而好學，不恥下問，是以謂之文也。」
Student Zi Gong asks: "Scholar Kong Wen Zi how become Scholar?" Confucius: "hardworking & willing to learn, not shameful to ask, therefore known as Scholar."
16) 子謂子產曰：「有君子之道四焉：其行己也恭，其事上也敬，其養民也惠，其使民也義。」
Confucius says about Official Zi Chan: "he has Gentleman 4 things: his actions on-self humble, his administer superior respectful, his treating population people virtuous, his using people righteous."
17) 子曰：「晏平仲善與人交，久而敬之。」
Confucius: "Official Yan Ping Zhong good with people, long time will respect him."
18) 子曰：「臧文仲居蔡、山節藻棁，何如其知也？」
Confucius: "Official Zang Wen Zhong use tortoises as divination like ancient, turn his house into divination temple, how can he be smart?"
19) 子張問曰：「今尹子文，三仕為令尹，無喜色；三已之，無慍色。舊令尹之政，必以告新令尹。何如？」子曰：「忠矣。」曰：「仁矣乎？」曰：「未知，焉得仁？」「崔子弒齊君，陳文子有馬十乘，棄而違之，至於他邦，則曰：『猶吾大夫崔子也！』違之。之一邦，則又曰：『猶吾大夫崔子也！』違之。何如？」子曰：「清矣。」曰：「仁矣乎？」曰：「未知，焉得仁？」
Student Zi Zhang asks: "today Official Zi Wen, 3 times as Official, no happy look; 3 times dismissed, no angry look. Old government, will tell the new Official. How is he?" Confucius: "Loyal." Asks: "near Ren (humanity)?" Confucius: "I do not know him, how know he near Ren (humanity)?" "Official Cui Zi kills bad emperor, gets 10 units of horses wealth, discards, go other country, says this country is the same! Leave. Another country, again says this country is the same! Leave. How?" Confucius: "upright." Asks: "near Ren (humanity)?" Confucius: "I do not know him, how know he near Ren (humanity)?"
20) 季文子三思而後行。子聞之曰：「再，斯可矣！」
Official Li Wen Zi 3 thoughts than do thing. Confucius hears & says: "1 thought & 1 thought, is enough!"
21) 子曰：「寗武子，邦有道則知，邦無道則愚。其知可及也，其愚不可及也。」
Confucius: "Official Ning Wu Zi, Country has Tao (virtues) use abilities, country no Tao (virtues) act stupid. His use abilities can reach, his act stupid cannot reach."
22) 子在陳曰：「歸與！歸與！吾黨之小子狂簡，斐然成章，不知所以裁之！」
Confucius in Country Chen (last country tour): "Let home! Let home! Better with juniors teach things, they are now capable, last time not know how to teach!"
23) 子曰：「伯夷、叔齊，不念舊惡，怨是用希。」
Confucius: "Person Bo Yi, Person Shu Qi, not remember old misgivings, people resentment few."
24) 子曰：「孰謂微生高直？或乞醯焉，乞諸其鄰而與之。」
Confucius: "who says person Wei Sheng Gao is upright? When asks vinegar from him, he asks from neighbour to give."
25) 子曰：「巧言、令色、足恭，左丘明恥之，丘亦恥之。匿怨而友其人，左丘明恥之，丘亦恥之。」
Confucius: "flattery words, acting expression, fake respectful, Elder Zhuo Qiu Ming feel disgusted, I also feel disgusted. Hide resentment & befriend hated person, Elder Zhuo Qiu Ming feel disgusted, I also feel disgusted."
26) 顏淵、季路待。子曰：「盍各言爾志？」子路曰：「願車馬、衣輕裘，與朋友共，敝之而無憾。」顏淵曰：「願無伐善，無施勞。」子路曰：「願聞子之志！」子曰：「老者安之，朋友信之，少者懷之。」
Student Yan Hui, Student Zi Lu waiting. Confucius: "please everyone says your Ambition?" Student Zi Lu: "wish my horse car, expensive coat, share among friends, spoil also no regret." Student Yan Hui: "wish no say self good, no say self do-lots." Student Zi Lu: "like to hear Teacher's Ambition!" Confucius: "all old able to rest, all friends able to trustworthy, all young able to care-of."
27) 子曰：「已矣乎！吾未見能見其過，而內自訟者也。」
Confucius: "forget it! I have never seen a person who can see own mistakes, & inner self scolding."
28) 子曰：「十室之邑，必有忠信如丘者焉，不如丘之好學也。」
Confucius: "10 houses city, confirm have loyal & trustworthy person like me, just not as hardworking as me."
1) 子曰：「雍也，可使南面。」仲弓問子桑伯子。子曰：「可也，簡。」仲弓曰：「居敬而行簡，以臨其民，不亦可乎？居簡而行簡，無乃大簡乎？」子曰：「雍之言然。」
Confucius: "Person Yong (Zhong Gong), can be south Emperor." Person Zhong Gong asks about Country Zi's person Sang Bo Zi. Confucius: "person Sang Bo Zi, simple thrifty." Person Zhong Gong: "inner-self respectful & do simple, to govern population people, isn't this better? Inner-self simple & do simple, isn't this too simple?" Confucius: "you are right."
2) 哀公問：「弟子孰為好學？」孔子對曰：「有顏回者好學：不遷怒，不貳過。不幸短命死矣！今也則亡，未聞好學者也。」
Emperor Ai asks: "which Student very love learning?" Confucius answers: "have Student Yan Hui: never angry, no second-error. Just that die young! Since then, never hear any Student so very love learning."
3) 子華使於齊。冉子為其母請粟。子曰：「與之釜。」請益，曰：「與之庾。」冉子與之粟五秉。子曰：「赤之適齊也，乘肥馬，衣輕裘，吾聞之也：君子周急不繼富。」原思為之宰，與之粟九百。辭。子曰：「毋！以與爾鄰里鄉黨乎！」
Person Zi Hua helps Confucius go Country Qi. Student Ran Zi asks for his mother some rice salary. Confucius: "give 6 unit 4 sub-unit." He asks for more, Confucius: "addition 2 unit 4 sub-unit." Student Ran Zi instead give rice 80 big-units. Confucius: "Person Zi Hua going Country Qi, ride fat horse, wear expensive coat, I hear before: Gentleman helps poor do not help rich." Official Yuan Si as Housekeeper, Confucius gives him rice 900 units. He refuses. Confucius: "no need! just share them with your neighbours!"
4) 子謂仲弓曰：「犂牛之子，騂且角；雖欲勿用，山川其舍諸？」
Confucius says about Student Zhong Gong: "farming cow's son, worship-worthy pale-colour & right size; although most people won't use, Mountain gods who will dislike?"
5) 子曰：「回也，其心三月不違仁；其餘，則日月至焉而已矣。」
Confucius: "Student Yan Hui, His heart 3 months never violate Ren (humanity); other Students, only 1 day or 1 month can do the same."
6) 季康子問：「仲由可使從政也與？」子曰：「由也果，於從政乎何有？」曰：「賜也可使從政也與？」子曰：「賜也達，於從政乎何有？」曰：「求也可使從政也與？」子曰：「求也藝，於從政乎何有？」
Official Kang Zi asks: "Student Zi Lu can in government?" Confucius: "Student Zi Lu is brave straight-forward, why cannot in government?" Asks: "Student Zi Gong can in government?" Confucius: "Student Zi Gong understand everything, why cannot in government?" Asks: "Student Ran You can in government?" Confucius: "Student Ran You many abilities, why cannot in government?"
7) 季氏使閔子騫為費宰。閔子騫曰：「善為我辭焉，如有復我者，則吾必在汶上矣。」
The official Ji's envoy wants Student Nin Zi Qian to be housekeeper. Student Nin Zi Qian: "confer I will not, if you come & ask again, I definitely cross river go north."
8) 伯牛有疾，子問之。自牖執其手，曰：「亡之，命矣夫！斯人也，而有斯疾也！斯人也，而有斯疾也！」
Student Bo Niu has sickness. Confucius visits. From window hold his hand. Confucius: "die, this must be fate! You are, should not have this sickness! You are, should not have this sickness!"
9) 子曰：「賢哉回也！一簞食，一瓢飲，在陋巷，人不堪其憂，回也不改其樂。賢哉回也！」
Confucius: "good is Student Yan Hui! 1 bowl rice, 1 cup water, live small alley, people cannot take it, Student Yan Hui do not change happiness. Good is Student Yan Hui!"
10) 冉求曰：「非不說子之道，力不足也。」子曰：「力不足者，中道而廢；今女畫。」
Student Ran Qiu: "not I do not like Teacher's Tao (everything). Just unable to reach. " Confucius: "those unable to reach, middle journey give up; like you drawing a line to say stop."
11) 子謂子夏曰：「女為君子儒，無為小人儒。」
Confucius tells Student Zi Xia: "you must Gentleman Confucian, don't become small person false-confucian."
12) 子游為武城宰。子曰：「女得人焉爾乎？」曰：「有澹臺滅明者，行不由徑；非公事，未嘗至於偃之室也。」
Student Zi You as City Wu Mayor. Confucius: "you get capable people to help you?" Answers: "a Person Dan Tai Mie Ming, do not take shortcut; not official business, will not come to my house."
13) 子曰：「孟之反不伐：奔而殿；將入門，策其馬，曰：『非敢後也，馬不進也！』」
Confucius: "Person Meng Zhi Fan not boast merits: protect rear when army retreat; then enter city gate, say his horse: not I want behind, horse won't go front!"
14) 子曰：「不有祝鮀之佞，而有宋朝之美，難乎免於今之世矣。」
Confucius: "now if do not have person Zhu Tuo speaking ability, & Person Song Zao beautiful look, afraid cannot be notice by people."
15) 子曰：「誰能出不由戶？何莫由斯道也！」
Confucius: "who can go out not by the Door? Why such Path no one wants take!"
16) 子曰：「質勝文則野；文勝質則史。文質彬彬，然後君子。」
Confucius: "Character more than Courtesy becomes country-bum; Courtesy more than Character becomes shallow-scholar. Courtesy & Character both full, then become Gentleman."
17) 子曰：「人之生也直；罔之生也，幸而免。」
Confucius: "Person is still alive because he is upright; Those not upright & still alive, because they are lucky."
18) 子曰：「知之者不如好之者，好之者不如樂之者。」
Confucius: "those who know Tao (virtues) cannot compare to those who love at Tao, those who love at Tao cannot compare to those happy at Tao."
19) 子曰：「中人以上，可以語上也；中人以下，不可以語上也。」
Confucius: "people average & above, can tell above things; people average & below, cannot tell above things."
20) 樊遲問知。子曰：「務民之義，敬鬼神而遠之，可謂知矣。」問仁。曰：「仁者先難而後獲，可謂仁矣。」
Person Fan Chi asks Wisdom. Confucius: "know duty of population people, respect ghosts & gods staying away from, is Wisdom." Asks Ren (humanity). Confucius: "Ren (humanity) Person first trouble then get, is Ren (humanity)."
21) 子曰：「知者樂水，仁者樂山。知者動，仁者靜。知者樂，仁者壽。」
Confucius: "Wise Person loves water, Ren (humanity) Person loves mountain. Wise Person moves, Ren (humanity) Person quiet. Wise Person happy, Ren (humanity) Person long-life."
22) 子曰：「齊一變，至於魯；魯一變，至於道。」
Confucius: "Country Qi if changes, can become Country Lu; Country Lu if changes, can become Sage-King Tao Country."
23) 子曰：「觚不觚，觚哉！觚哉！」
Confucius: "cup not cup, cup no more! Cup no more! (About ancient Rite cup.)"
24) 宰我問曰：「仁者，雖告之曰：『井有仁焉。』其從之也？」子曰：「何為其然也？君子可逝也，不可陷也；可欺也，不可罔也。」
Person Zai Wo asks: "for Ren (humanity) Person, if tell: "inside well has Ren (humanity). Does He fall in?" Confucius: "why should he? Gentleman can die for Ren (humanity), but not put self in danger; can be deceived, but not stupidly deceived."
25) 子曰：「君子博學於文，約之以禮，亦可以弗畔矣夫！」
Confucius: "Gentleman well learned in Classics, restrain with Rites, then can not against Tao (virtues) Gentleman."
26) 子見南子，子路不說。夫子矢之曰：「予所否者，天厭之！天厭之！」
Confucius visits Lady Nan Zi, Student Zi Lu not happy. Confucius swears: "if I do wrong things, Heaven forsake me! Heaven forsake me!"
27) 子曰：「中庸之為德也，其至矣乎！民鮮久矣！」
Confucius: "Mean (Optimum Tao) is Virtue, is the highest Cultivation! But population people long do not know!"
28) 子貢曰：「如有博施於民，而能濟眾，何如？可謂仁乎？」子曰：「何事於仁，必也聖乎！堯舜其猶病諸！夫仁者，己欲立而立人，己欲達而達人。能近取譬，可謂仁之方也已。」
Student Zi Gong: "if Person widely give the population people, & able to help mass, how? Is this Ren (humanity)?" Confucius: "this is more than Ren (humanity), consider Sage! Sage-King Yao & Sage-King Shun cannot even do! Gentleman Ren (humanity), self establishes then establishes others, self makes then makes others. Think what to self to do others, can say is nearing Ren (humanity) formula."
1) 子曰：「述而不作，信而好古，竊比於我老彭。」
Confucius: "I bring-out Old Things not create, believe & love Old Things, I am like the ancient Official Old Peng."
2) 子曰：「黙而識之，學而不厭，誨人不倦：何有於我哉？」
Confucius: "silent read & know it, learn & not tired, teach people not tired: what is there for me?"
3) 子曰：「德之不脩，學之不講，聞義不能徙，不善不能改，是吾憂也。」
Confucius: "Virtues not cultivate, learning not teach, hear Righteousness cannot follow, not good unable to correct, are my worries."
4) 子之燕居，申申如也，夭夭如也。」
Confucius idle at home, still strict looks, still nice looks.
5) 子曰：「甚矣吾衰也！久矣，吾不復夢見周公！」
Confucius: "I am getting old! Very long, I have not repeat dream of Sage-King Zhou!"
6) 子曰：「志於道，據於德，依於仁，游於藝。」
Confucius: "ambition in Tao (everything), determined in Virtues, follow in Ren (humanity), fun in Skills."
7) 子曰：「自行束脩以上，吾未嘗無誨焉！」
Confucius: "those self restrain cultivation & above, I have not try not teaching!"
8) 子曰：「不愤，不啟；不悱，不發。舉一隅不以三隅反，則不復也。」
Confucius: "not eager, I do not enlighten; not want to speak, I do not make talk. Lay 1 point he not come the 3 points, I do not repeat."
9) 子食於有喪者之側，未嘗飽也。子於是日哭，則不歌。
Confucius eating near funeral people's side, never eat full. Confucius near those crying that day, not music."
10) 子謂顏淵曰：「用之則行，舍之則藏：唯我與爾有是夫！」子路曰：「子行三軍，則誰與？」子曰：「暴虎馮河，死而無悔者，吾不與也。必也臨事而懼，好謀而成者也！」
Confucius says Student Yan Hui: "when employ will implement all, when forsake will hide self: only I & you have same doing!" Student Zi Lu: "Confucius execute Combined Army, with who?" Confucius: "die fighting tiger drown crossing river, die with no regret, I will not with? Must someone treat things with caution, good in strategies to accomplish person!"
11) 子曰：「富而可求也，雖執鞭之士，吾亦為之；如不可求，從吾所好。」
Confucius: "wealth can be sought, even lowly Punishment Officer, I will do; if cannot be sought, I will do other Jobs I like."
12) 子之所慎：齊、戰、疾。
Confucius's worries: people Cultivation, world wars, suffering diseases.
13) 子在齊聞韶，三月不知肉味。曰：「不圖為樂之至於斯也！」
Confucius in Country Qi hears Sage-King Music, 3 months not know meat taste. Confucius: "not guess Sage-King Music can reach so high level!"
14) 冉有曰：「夫子為衛君乎？」子貢曰：「諾，吾將問之。」入曰：「伯夷，叔齊，何人也？」曰：「古之賢人也。」曰：「怨乎？」曰：「求仁而得仁，又何怨？」出，曰：「夫子不為也。」
Student Ran You: "Teacher Confucius will defend Country Wei emperor?" Student Zi Gong: "ok, I go ask." Enter ask Confucius: "Person Bo Yi, Person Shu Qi, who are they?" Confucius: "ancient Good Persons (they follow their father Emperor's Order to give up Throne to their youngest brother)." Asks: "they resentful?" Confucius: "they wants Ren (humanity) & gets Ren (humanity), how be resentful?" Out, tells Student Ran You: "Teacher Confucius will not."
15) 子曰：「飯疏食，飲水，曲肱而枕之，樂亦在其中矣。不義而富且貴，於我如浮雲。」
Confucius: "rice plain foods, drinking water, elbow hand as pillow, happy enjoying in life. Not righteousness to be rich & high-class, to me like floating clouds."
16) 子曰：「加我數年，五十以學易，可以無大過矣。」
Confucius: "Heaven add me few life years, 50 years old to learn I-Ching (changing Tao everything), can then no big mistake."
17) 子所雅言：詩、書、執禮，皆雅言也。
Confucius uses nice words in: Poems, Classics, citing Rites, everything nice sounds.
18) 葉公問孔子於子路，子路不對。子曰：「女奚不曰；『其為人也，發憤忘食，樂以忘憂，不知老之將至云爾！』」
Emperor Ye asks about Confucius on Student Zi Lu, Student Zi Lu no answer. Confucius: "you why do not say: His character, hard studying forget food, so happy forget worry, not know old age is coming only that!"
19) 子曰：「我非生而知之者；好古，敏以求之者也。」
Confucius: "I am not born knowing person; just love Ancient, eager to know Person only."
20) 子不語：怪、力、亂、神。
Confucius not talk: strange weird, extreme strength, confused ethics, superstition gods.
21) 子曰：「三人行，必有我師焉。擇其善者而從之；其不善者而改之。」
Confucius: "3 person walking, one definitely is my Teacher. Choose good to follow, choose not good to reflect change."
22) 子曰：「天生德於予，恒[魆*]其如予何？」
Confucius: "Heaven gives spread Virtues Assignment to me, person Hen Xu (wants to kill Confucius) can do what to me?"
23) 子曰：「二三子以我為隱乎？吾無隱乎爾！吾無行而不與二三子者，是丘也。」
Confucius: "every Student asks what things have I keep hidden? I no hidden to you! I not do thing I do not tell every Student, this is me."
24) 子以四教：文、行、忠、信。
Confucius uses 4 things to teach: Classics, Practice, Loyalty, Trustworthiness.
25) 子曰：「聖人，吾不得而見之矣！得見君子者，斯可矣。」子曰：「善人，吾不得而見之矣！得見有恆者，斯可矣。亡而為有，虛而為盈，約而為泰，難乎有恆矣！」
Confucius: "Sage, I unable see one! See Gentleman, can already." Confucius: "Good Person, I unable to see one! See long time Person, can already. Do not have pretend have, Empty pretend full learning, virtues little pretend many virtues, hard to be long time Person!"
26) 子鈎而不綱；弋不射宿。
Confucius hook fish not use net; not shoot birds at nest.
27) 子曰：「蓋有不知而作之者，我無是也。多聞，擇其善者而從之；多見而識之，知之次也。」
Confucius: "have not know & create person, I am not. Many hear, choose good things & follow; many see & think, born knowing is secondary."
28) 互鄉難與言；童子見，門人惑。子曰：「與其進也，不與其退也。唯何甚！人潔己以進，與其潔也，不保其往也！」
Sinful neighbours difficult to talk with; a neighbour boy visits Confucius, Students not know what do. Confucius: "with him advance, not with him back advance. Not too rejecting! Person clean self to advance, with him clean together, not influence by his past!"
29) 子曰：「仁遠乎哉？我欲仁，斯仁至矣！」
Confucius: "Ren (humanity) far from us? I want Ren (humanity), Ren (humanity) comes!"
30) 陳司敗問：「昭公知禮乎？」孔子曰：「知禮。」孔子退。揖巫馬期而進之曰：「吾聞君子不黨，君子亦黨乎？君取於吳為同姓，為之吳孟子。君而知禮，孰不知禮？」巫馬期以告。子曰：「丘也幸，茍有過，人必知之。」
Official Chen Si Bai asks: "emperor Zhao knows Rites?" Confucius: "know Rites." Confucius leaves. That Official asks Student Wu Ma Qi to forward: "I hear Gentleman do not gang, is Gentleman (Confucius) ganging? The emperor because empress Wu has his same surname, change her surname to Wu Meng Zi. The emperor know Rites, who do not know Rites?" Student Wu Ma Qi tells Confucius. Confucius: "I am lucky, have mistake, people definitely know."
31) 子與人歌而善，必使反之，而後和之。
Confucius with people singing very well, definitely ask him to repeat singing alone, then sing with him.
32) 子曰：「文，莫吾猶人也；躬行君子，則吾未之有得！」
Confucius: "Classics, can able same as people; practice as Gentleman, I cannot attain yet!"
33) 子曰：「若聖與仁，則吾豈敢？抑為之不厭，誨人不倦，則可謂云爾已矣！」公西華曰：「正唯弟子不能學也！」
Confucius: "compare me to Sage & Ren (humanity), how able to? I am only trying non-stop, teaching people not tired, can say only like that! Student Gong Xi Hua: "this is what we unable to!"
34) 子疾病，子路請禱。子曰：「有諸？」子路對曰：「有之。洡曰：『禱爾於上下神祇。』」子曰：「丘之禱久矣！」
Confucius has sickness, Student Zi Lu prays for him. Confucius: "have this thing?" Student Zi Lu answers: "have. Old saying: pray on behalf to up down gods." Confucius: "I pray this old time ago!"
35) 子曰：「奢則不孫，儉則固；與其不孫也，寧固。」
Confucius: "expensive seems over-spending, thrifty seems over-saving; better not be over-spending, rather be over-saving."
36) 子曰：「君子坦蕩蕩，小人長戚戚。」
Confucius: "Gentleman open heart freely, small person worry many things."
37) 子溫而厲，威而不猛，恭而安。
Confucius is nice but strict, scary but not fierce, humble & calm.
1) 子曰：「泰伯其可謂至德也已矣，三以天下讓，民無得而稱焉。」
Confucius: "Person Tai Bo can say Highest Virtues already, 3 times give Kingdom, population people not able to describe him."
2) 子曰：「恭而無禮則勞，慎而無禮則葸，勇而無禮則亂，直而無禮則絞。君子篤於親，則民與於仁；故舊不遺，則民不偷。」
Confucius: "respect but no Rites is waste time, careful but no Rites is too timid, brave but No Rites is create chaos, upright but no Rites is too extreme. Gentleman stress on loving family, then population people widespread in Ren (humanity); therefore old not abandon, then population people do not crime."
3) 曾子有疾，召門弟子曰：「啟予足！啟予手！詩云：『戰戰競競，如臨深淵，如履薄冰。』而今而後，吾知免夫！小子！」
Student Zeng Zi is dying sick, call his Students: "look my fee! Look my hands! (Not cut off of criminal offences.) Poems Scripture: carefully carefully, like near deep cliff, like on thin ice. From today onwards, I know I will not criminal offence! Little ones!"
4) 曾子有疾，孟敬子問之。曾子言曰：「鳥之將死，其鳴也哀；人之將死，其言也善。君子所貴乎道者三：動容貌，斯遠暴慢矣；正顏色，斯近信矣；出辭氣，斯遠鄙倍矣。籩豆之事，則有司存。」
Student Zeng Zi is dying sick, Official Meng Jing Zi visits. Student Zeng Zi: "birds to die, their voices sad; humans to die, their words good. Gentleman value Tao (virtues) in 3 areas: actions facial expressions, away from temper proudness; correct facial looks, near Trustworthiness; Out words, away from barbarian things away from Tao (virtues). Official details, have respective small Officers."
5) 曾子曰：「以能問於不能，以能問於寡；有若無，實若虛；犯而不校，昔者吾友，嘗從事於斯矣。」
Student Zeng Zi: "self capable asking those not capable, self capable those knowledge shallow; have capability appears no capability, have knowledge appears no knowledge; people offence self & disregard, last time I have a fellow friend (Student Yan Hui), do things like these."
6) 曾子曰：「可以託六尺之孤，可以寄百里之命，臨大節而不可奪也。君子人與？君子人也！」
Student Zeng Zi: "can give responsibility of emperorship, can give duty of governing 100 miles country, under big tests still cannot change heart. Is this Gentleman? This is Gentleman!"
7) 曾子曰：「士不可以不弘毅，任重而道遠。仁以為己任，不亦重乎！死而後已，不亦遠乎！」
Student Zeng Zi: "a Jedi cannot not big ambition, duty heavy & journey far. Ren (humanity) as self Duty, isn't it heavy! Death then stop, isn't it far!"
8) 子曰：「興於詩，立於禮，成於樂。」
Confucius: "start in poems, establish in Rites, end in music."
9) 子曰：「民可使由之，不可使知之。」
Confucius: "population people can be guided, cannot tell know."
10) 子曰：「好勇疾貧，亂也。人而不仁，疾之已甚，亂也。」
Confucius: "brave & hate poorness, violent wrong. As human not Ren (humanity), hate people, violent wrong."
11) 子曰：「如有周公之才之美，使驕且吝，其餘不足觀也已！」
Confucius: "if have Sage-King's abilities & looks, is proud & bad, the rest not worth looking!"
12) 子曰：「三年學，不至於榖，不易得也。」
Confucius: "3 years Cultivation, not for salary money, hard to find these people."
13) 子曰：「篤信好學，守死善道。危邦不入，亂邦不居。天下有道則見，無道則隱。邦有道，貧且賤焉，恥也；邦無道，富且貴焉，恥也。」
Confucius: "trust Tao (virtues) hard learning, die guard in good Tao (virtues). Dangerous country not enter, wars country not stay. Worlds under Heaven have Tao (virtues) then appear, no tao (virtues) than hide. Country has Tao (virtues), poor & low-class, is shameful; country no tao (virtues), rich & high class, is shameful."
14) 子曰：「不在其位，不謀其政。」
Confucius: "not in Position, not do that Job."
15) 子曰：「師摯之始，關雎之亂，洋洋乎，盈耳哉！」
Confucius: "(Music) Official Shi Zhi begins, Song Guan Ju ends, very pleasant, nice to ear."
16) 子曰：「狂而不直，侗而不愿，悾悾而不信，吾不知之矣！」
Confucius: "anyhow & not upright, childish & not careful, nothing heart & not believe, I do not want to know (teach)!"
17) 子曰：「學如不及，猶恐失之！」
Confucius: "learn like cannot make it, then fear losing learning.
18) 子曰：「巍巍乎，舜、禹之有天下也，而不與焉。」
Confucius: "Most Highest, Sage-King Shun, Sage-King Yu have Worlds under Heaven, do not take as own."
19) 子曰：「大哉，堯之為君也！巍巍乎，唯天為大，唯堯則之！蕩蕩乎，民無能名焉！巍巍乎，其有成功也！煥乎，其有文章！」
Confucius: "Greatest, Sage-King Yao as Emperor! Most Highest, only Heaven as great, only Sage-King Yao can reach! Reach no edge, population people cannot describe! Most Highest, have the Successes! How Bright, have Rites System!"
20) 舜有臣五人，而天下治。武王曰：「予有亂臣十人。」孔子曰：「『才難』，不其然乎？唐虞之際，於斯為盛；有婦人焉，九人而已。三分天下有其二，以服事殷；周之德，其可謂至德也已矣！」
Sage-King Shun has 5 capable Officials, then Worlds under Heaven is well-governed. Sage-King Wu Wang: "I have calm-wars Officials 10 Persons." Confucius: "capable people hard to find, is it not so? Time between Sage-King Shun & Sage-King Wu Wang, capable people are many; Sage-King Wu Wang has 1 female Express, actually 9 capable Officials only. 3 parts Worlds under Heaven have 2 parts, submitting Sage-King Wu Wang; Dynasty Zhou's Virtues. can say is Highest Virtues reach!"
21) 子曰：「禹，吾無閒然矣！菲飲食，而致孝乎鬼神；惡衣服，而致美乎黻冕；卑宮室，而盡力乎溝洫。禹，吾無閒然矣！」
Confucius: "Sage-King Yu, I no bad things to say! Eat cheap foods, but most expensive offerings to Ghost & gods; Wear cheap clothings, but most expensive robes in Praying; cheap bedroom, but most expensive spending in farming irrigation. Sage-King Yu, I no bad things to say!"
1) 子罕言利，與命，與仁。
Confucius seldom talks gains, only Fate (duty), only Ren (humanity).
2) 達巷黨人曰：「大哉孔子！博學而無所成名。」子聞之，謂門弟子曰：「吾何執？執御乎？執射乎？吾執御矣！」
Some School Person: "great is Confucius! Knowledgeable but nothing good famous." Confucius hears, tells Students: "I good at what? Good at driving car? Good at archery? I think good at driving car then!"
3) 子曰：「麻冕，禮也；今也純，儉，吾從眾。拜下，禮也；今拜乎上，泰也，雖違眾，吾從下。」
Confucius: "cloth Official Crown, is Rites; today make of silk, save labour, I follow general public. Below court bow Emperor, is Rites; today upper court bow, is proudness, although against general public, I with below court bow."
4) 子絕四：毋意，毋必，毋固，毋我。
Confucius do not 4: do not guess, do not insist, do not stubborn, do not self-centre.
5) 子畏於匡。曰：「文王既沒，文不在茲乎？天之將喪斯文也，後死者不得與於斯文也；天之未喪斯文也，匡人其如予何？」
Confucius in danger place Kuang. Say: "Sage-King Wen Wang dies, is Culture not with me? Heaven if wants to destroy this Culture, me die later cannot be involved in relaying this Culture then; if Heaven does not want to destroy this Culture, what can place Kuang people do to me?"
6) 大宰問於子貢曰：「夫子聖者與？何其多能也？」子貢曰：「固天縱之將聖，又多能也。」子聞之曰：「大宰知我乎？吾少也賤，故多能鄙事。君子多乎哉？不多也！」牢曰：「子云：『吾不試，故藝。』」
One Official asks Student Zi Gong: "Confucius a Sage? How come so many capable?" Student Zi Gong: "because Heaven let Him be Sage, & many capable." Confucius hears & says: "That Official knows me indeed. When I young am low class, therefore many capable to do many things. Gentleman does not think too many (capable). Not think too many!" Student Lao: "Confucius says I not employ by people, therefore many abilities."
7) 子曰：「吾有知乎哉？無知也。有鄙夫問我，空空如也；我叩其兩端而竭焉。」
Confucius: "Do I know? Do not know. Some ignorant asks me, what is Universe Emptiness (voidness); I go 2 extremes (Yin & Yang) & reach everything."
8) 子曰：「鳳鳥不至，河不出圖，吾已矣夫！」
Confucius: "Bird Phoenix do not come, river do not out drawing-showing Tortoise, I am very disappointed (because no Heaven Signs)!"
9) 子見齊衰者，冕衣裳者，與瞽者，見之，雖少必作；過之必趨。
Confucius sees People wearing Funeral Rite Clothings, People wearing Ceremony Rite Clothings, & blind people, when meeting, even they young will stand up; when they pass will respect."
10) 顏淵喟然歎曰：「仰之彌高，鑽之彌堅，詹之在前，忽焉在後！夫子循循然善誘人；博我以文，約我以禮。欲罷不能，既竭吾才，如有所立卓爾，雖欲從之，未由也已！」
Student Yan Hui signs: "(Confucius Tao is) look up very high, look down very deep, look very front, suddenly very behind! Teacher Confucius step-by-step guide us; knowledge me with Classics, restrict me with Rites. Want to stop cannot bear, must do my very best, if setup my unique style, although want to, but cannot."
11) 子疾病，子路使門人為臣。病閒，曰：「久矣哉，由之行詐也！無臣而為有臣，吾誰欺？欺天乎？且予與其死於臣之手也，無寧死於二三子之手乎！且予縱不得大葬，予死於道路乎？」
Confucius sick, Student Zi Lu instructs Students to be Home Officers. Confucius sick better, says: "for long, you do deceiving! I am not Country Official cannot have Home Officer, I deceive who? Deceive Heaven? To die in Home Officers' hands, might as die in Students' hands! Although cannot use Official big burial, but does not mean I will die on the road (no burial)?"
12) 子貢曰：「有美玉於斯，韞匵而藏諸？求善賈而沽諸？」子曰：「沽之哉！沽之哉！我待賈者也！」
Student Zi Gong: "have beautiful jade here, put closet & hide? or ask know value Person to sell to?" Confucius: "to sell to! To sell to! I am waiting know value Person!"
13) 子欲居九夷。或曰：「陋，如之何？」子曰：「君子居之，何陋之有？」
Confucius thinking of living in barbarian country. Someone: "there not advance, how to live?" Confucius: "Gentleman live place, where can be not advance."
14) 子曰：「吾自衛反魯，然後樂正，雅頌各得其所。」
Confucius: "I since back at Country Lu, then Country music correct, Rites Music all at their places."
15) 子曰：「出則事公卿，入則事父兄，丧事不敢不勉，不為酒困，何有於我哉？」
Confucius: "out do official duties to superior, in do filial duties to parents & siblings, funerals do not dare not do best, not trap by alcohol, these things how difficult on me?"
16) 子在川上曰：「逝者如斯夫！不舍晝夜。」
Confucius on top of river, says: "flow advance like water! Regardless of day & night!"
17) 子曰：「吾未見好德如好色者也。」
Confucius: "I have not see love virtues like love sex person."
18) 子曰：「譬如為山，未成一簣，止，吾止也！譬如平地，雖覆一簣，進，吾往也！」
Confucius: "like making a mountain, unfinished of last effort, stop, because you stop! Like leveling land, although only 1 effort, advance, because you advance!"
19) 子曰：「語之而不惰者，其回也與！」
Confucius: "instructs & no laziness Person, only Student Yan Hui!"
20) 子謂顏淵，曰：「惜乎！吾見其進也，未見其止也！」
Confucius says Student Yan Hui: "miss him! I only see him advance, never see him stopping!"
21) 子曰：「苗而不秀者，有矣夫！秀而不實者，有矣夫！」
Confucius: "grow & no flower person, waste teacher's efforts! Flower & no fruit person, waste teacher's efforts."
22) 子曰：「後生可畏，焉知來者之不如今也？四十五十而無聞焉，斯亦不足畏也已！」
Confucius: "younger generations are scary, how know his future is not better than now? 40 50 year old if nothing heard, then are not scary!"
23) 子曰：「法語之言，能無從乎？改之為貴。巽與之言，能無說乎？繹之為貴。說而不繹，從而不改，吾未如之何也已矣！」
Confucius: "Correcting teachings, can don't follow? Correction then precious. Guidance teachings, can don't happy? Self-searching then precious. Correcting but don't self-search, follow but don't change, I do not know what to do!"
24) 子曰：「主忠信，毋友不如己者，過則無憚改。」
Confucius: "concentrate Loyalty & Trustworthiness, not friend those worse than self, those not change faults."
25) 子曰：「三軍可奪帥也，匹夫不可奪志也。」
Confucius: "for 3 Armies can capture its general, for Jedi cannot capture his Ambitions."
26) 子曰：「衣敝縕袍，與衣狐貉者立，而不恥者，其由也與！『不忮不求，何用不臧？』」子路終身誦之。子曰：「是道也，何足以臧？」
Confucius: "wear cheap clothes, stand with expensive robe people, & not feel shameful, only Student Zi Lu can! No jealous no desire, how can no good?" Student Zi Lu recites this everyday. Confucius: "this statement Tao (way), how enough to good?"
27) 子曰：「歲寒，然後知松柏之後彫也。」
Confucius: "winter cold, then can know Tree Song & Tree Bo able to withstand greenness."
28) 子曰：「知者不惑，仁者不憂，勇者不懼。」
Confucius: "Wise Person not doubtful, Ren (humanity) Person not worry, Brave Person not scare."
29) 子曰：「可與共學，未可與適道；可與適道，未可與立；可與立，未可與權。」
Confucius: "Can study together, may not Tao (way) together; can Tao (way) together, may not same goals; can same goals, may not power together."
30) 「唐棣之華，偏其反而；豈不爾思？室是遠而。」子曰：「未之思也，夫何遠之有？」
"Flower Tang Di's beautifulness, face opposite; cannot not think of? Just they are far away." Confucius: "because never think of, to Gentleman where is far?"
1) 孔子於鄉黨，恂恂如也，似不能言者。其在宗廟朝廷，便便言，唯謹爾。
Confucius with country gang (home neighbours), nice-nice as usual, like unable to talk. With Temples & Government Officials, talk a lots, only more careful.
2) 朝，與下大夫言，侃侃如也。與上大夫言，誾誾如也。君在，踧踖如也，與與如也。
Seeing Emperor, (Confucius) with fellow Officials talk, tight & nice as usual. With senior Officers talk, nice & debating as usual. With Emperor, respectful & careful as usual, comfortable & nice as usual.
3) 君召使擯，色勃如也，足躩如也。揖所與立，左右手，衣前後，襜如也。趨進，翼如也。賓退，必復命，曰：「賓不顧矣。」
Emperor asks (Confucius) to meet Guests, face expression as usual, backward behind remain same. Bow to Guests where standing, left right hands, clothes swing follow, movements sharp. Fast forward, light & fast. Guests withdraw, definitely reports back Emperor. Says: "Guests no more."
4) 入公門，鞠躬如也，如不容。立不中門，行不履閾。過位，色勃如也，足躩如也，其言似不足者。攝齊升堂，鞠躬如也，屏氣似不息者。出降一等，逞顏色，怡怡如也。沒階趨進，翼如也。復其位，踧踖如也。
When (Confucius) enters Court door, bow as usual, like ceiling low. Not stand at Centre of Path (Emperor only), walk not step on side. Pass Emperor Seat, respectful expression as usual, backward behind as usual, talk like dare not talk Person. Bow raising clothes during Court Beginning, bow as usual, hold breath like not breathing. Step on stairs, forceful relax, nice & happy as usual. No stairs forward, light & fast as usual. Returning to seat, respectful & careful as usual.
5) 執圭，鞠躬如也，如不勝。上如揖，下如授，勃如戰色，足[宿*][宿*]如有循。享禮，有容色。私覿，偷偷如也。
(Confucius on Official Duties) takes Imperial Jade, bow as usual, like too heavy to take. Take up like giving, take down like taking, expression like seriousness, walk steps slowly slowly with rhythm. Given hospitality, then a bit relax. Meeting privately, happy as usual.
6) 君子不以紺緅飾，紅紫不以為亵服。當暑，袗絺綌，必表而出之。緇衣羔裘，素衣麑裘，黃衣狐裘。褻裘長，短右袂。狐貉之厚以居，去喪，無所不佩。非帷裳，必殺之。羔裘玄冠，不以弔。吉月，必朝服而朝。
Gentleman not use light-green or light-black as dress colour, red or purple as normal dress colour. When summer, single-layer light-material cheap dress, surely appear gentlemanly become. Black goat coat, whit deer coat, yellow fox coat. Home coat longer (to keep warm), short right sleeve (easy to work). Fox coat thickness to sit, during funeral, do not wear. Not rite-dimension cloth, definitely cut away. Black coat black hat, not to funeral. First of month, surely formal clothing facing Emperor.
7) 齊必有明衣布。必有寢衣，長一身有半。齊必變食，居必遷坐。
Fasting surely clean clothing clothes. Surely have sleeping clothes, length 1.5 body length. Fasting surely change diet, live surely change room (no wife sex purpose).
8) 食不厭精，膾不厭細。食饐而[饋*]，魚餒而肉敗，不食。色惡不食，臭惡不食。失飪不食，不時不食。割不正不食，不得其醬不食。肉雖多，不使勝食氣。唯酒無量，不及亂。沽酒市脯不食。不撤薑食，不多食。祭於公，不宿肉。祭肉不出三日；出三日，不食之矣。食不語，寢不言。雖疏食菜羹瓜祭，必齋如也。
Food not hate perfect, cook not hate attention. Food left-long become bad, fish not-fresh become meat spoiled, not eat. Appearance bad not eat, smell bad not eat. Lack cook not eat, not time not eat. Cut not right not eat, not get right sauce not eat. Meat although many, not make better food smell. Only alcohol no specification, just not drunk. Brought alcohol market dry-meat not eat. Not put ginger, not more eat. Praying for public, not on meat. Prayed meat not more 3 days; more 3 days, not to eat. Eat not talk, sleep not talk. Although simple food vegetable cooking fruits praying, surely strict treatment same.
9) 席不正不坐。鄉人飲酒，杖者出，斯出矣。鄉人儺，朝服而立於阼階。
Seat not right not sit. Town neighbours dinner drinking, old people exit first, then exit. Town big events, formal clothing & stand according to seniority.
10) 問人於他邦，再拜而送之。康子饋藥，拜而受之，曰：「丘未達，不敢嘗。」
Ask people to go aboard, repeat thanking to send off. Gentleman Kang Zi's gift medicine, thanks & accept, Confucius: "I am not that knowing, not dare taste."
11) 厩焚。子退朝，曰：「傷人乎？」不問馬。
Horse stable on fire. Confucius back from Government Court, Confucius: "anyone hurt?" Do not ask about horses.
12) 君賜食，必正席先嘗之。君賜腥，必孰而薦之。君賜生，必畜之。侍食於君，君祭，先飯。疾，君視之，東首，加朝服拖坤。君命召，不俟駕行矣。
Emperor awards food, must right seat taste first. Emperor awards meat, must ensure cooking. Emperor awards livestock, must rear up. Eating foods with Emperor, Emperor ceremony, eat first (taste for poisons). Sick, Emperor visits, east facing, formal clothing with belt. Emperor asks for, without horse ready go.
13) 入太廟，每事問。
Enter Temple, everything Temple things ask.
14) 朋友死，無所歸，曰：「於我殯。」朋友之饋，雖車馬；非祭肉，不拜。
Friends die, no where funeral, Confucius: "let me funeral." Friends give gifts, even car horse; not ceremonial meat, not bow.
15) 寢不尸，居不容。見齊衰者，雖狎必變。見冕者與[瞽*]者，雖褻必以貌。凶服者式之。式負版者，有盛饌，必變色而作。迅雷、風烈必變。
Sleep not like dead body, home not like guest. See funeral person, even friend will change expressions. See government official & blind person, even friend will change expression. See funeral clothing persons respect with. Respect Country Seal persons, in formal dinner, will change expressions to do. Hearing thunder, wind strong will change expression.
16) 升車，必正立，執綏。車中不內顧，不疾言，不親指。
Start car, will upright, using rope. Car inside no back look, no talking, no pointing.
17) 色斯舉矣。翔而後集。曰：「山梁雌雉，時哉時哉！」子路共之，三嗅而作。
(Birds) see not right fly up. Flying thinking where to land. Confucius: "mountain wild birds, know things know things!" Student Zi Lu bows birds, birds sounds 3 times return bows.
1) 子曰：「先進於禮樂，野人也；後人於禮樂，君子也。如用之，則吾從先進。」
Confucius: "first forward in Rites Music, rude person; last person in Rites Music, Gentleman. If to be, I will be first forward."
2) 子曰：「從我於陳蔡者，皆不及門也。」德行、顏淵、閔子騫、冉伯牛、仲弓。言語、宰我、子貢。政事、冉有、季路。文學、子游、子夏。
Confucius: "follow me trapped in Country Chen Cai, students, most no longer around." (Left) Virtues, Student Yan Hui, Student Min Zi Qian, Student Ran Bo Niu, Student Zhong Gong. Talking, Student Zai Wo, Student Zi Gong. Government Administration, Student Ran You, Student Zi Lu. Literature, Student Zi You, Zi Xia.
3) 子曰：「回也，非助我者也！於吾言，無所說。」
Confucius: "Student Yan Hui, not help me Person! For my Teachings, no anything (additional) say."
4) 子曰：「孝哉閔子騫！人不閒於其父母昆弟之言。」
Confucius: "Filial is Student Min Zi Qian! He not bother by what parents & brothers' talking."
5) 南容三復白圭，孔子以其兄之子妻之。
Gentleman Nan Rong 3 times revise Poems Bai Gui, Confucius marry brother's daughter as wife to.
6) 季康子問：「弟子孰為好學？」孔子對曰：「有顏回者好學，不幸短命死矣！今也則亡。」
Person asks: "student who is hardworking?" Confucius answers: "have Student Yan Hui hardworking, unfortunate short life die! Now gone."
7) 顏淵死，顏路請子之車以為之椁。子曰：「才不才，亦各言其子也。鯉也死，有棺而無椁。吾不徒行以為之椁，以吾從大夫之後，不可徒行也。」
Student Yan Hui die, his father Yan Lu requests Confucius' car horse as funeral gift. Confucius: "talented no-talented, same for your son. My son Li also die, has coffin no funeral gift. I will not walk because of giving funeral gift, as I was Official before, cannot walk."
8) 顏淵死，子曰：「噫！天丧予！天丧予！」
Student Yan Hui die, Confucius: "God! Heaven killing me! Heaven killing me!"
9) 顏淵死，子哭之慟。從者曰：「子慟矣！」曰：「有慟乎？非夫人之為慟而誰為？」
Student Yan Hui die, Confucius cry too extreme. Followed Students: "Confucius cry too extreme!" Confucius: "have extreme? not for this Student too extreme then for who?"
10) 顏淵死，門人欲厚葬之。子曰：「不可！」門人厚葬之。子曰：「回也，視予猶父也，予不得視猶子也。非我也。夫二三子也。」
Student Yan Hui die, Students want grand burial. Confucius: "cannot!" Students grand burial with. Confucius: "Student Yan Hui, treat me like father, I cannot treat him like son. Not my, it is the Students' way."
11) 季路問事鬼神？子曰：「未能事人，焉能事鬼？」曰：「敢問死？」曰：「未知生，焉知死？」
Student Zi Lu asks treating ghosts gods. Confucius: "unable treat humans, how to treat ghosts?" Student Zi Lu: "can ask death?" Confucius: "not know life, how to know death."
12) 閔子侍側，誾誾如也；子路，行行如也；冉有、子貢，侃侃如也。子樂。「若由也，不得其死然。」
Student Min Zi Qian beside Confucius, happy appearance. Student Zi Lu, tough appearance. Student Ran You, Student Zi Gong, upright appearance. Confucius happy. "but Student Zi Lu, not good death will."
13) 魯人為長府。閔子騫曰：「仍舊貫，如之何？何必改作！」子曰：「夫人不言，言必有中。」
Country Lu people rebuilding Government Building. Student Min Zi Qian: "still old usable, why cannot use? Why need rebuild!" Confucius: "Student not talk, talk definitely correct point."
14) 子曰：「由之瑟，奚為於丘之門？」門人不敬子路。子曰：「由也升堂矣，未入於室也！」

15) 子貢問：「師與商也孰賢？」子曰：「師也過，商也不及。」曰：「然則師愈與？」曰：「過猶不及。」
Student Zi Gong asks: "Student Zi Chang & Student Zi Xia who is better?" Confucius: "Student Zi Chang over, Student Zi Xia under." Student Zi Gong: "then Student Zi Chang is better?" Confucius: "over like under."
16) 季氏當於周公，而求也為之聚歛而附益之。子曰：「非吾徒也，小子鳴鼓而攻之可也！」
The person Ji richer than Sage-King Zhou Gong, but student Qiu still tax citizens money to give him. Confucius: "not my student, Students you can court drum to court him!"
17) 柴也愚，參也魯，師也辟，由也喭。
Student Gao Chai stupid, Student Zeng Zi simple, Student Zi Chang extremist, Student Zi Lu aggressive.
18) 子曰：「回也其庶乎！屢空。賜不受命而貨殖焉，億則屢中。」
Confucius: "Student Yan Hui near Tao (way)! House poor. Student Zi Gong not accept Fate & do trade, always guess earn."
19) 子張問善人之道。子曰：「不踐迹，亦不入於室。」
Student Zi Chang asks good person Tao (path). Confucius: "not follow Path, unable to enter state."
20) 子曰：「論篤是與，君子者乎？色莊者乎？」
Confucius: "people say good person, gentleman? Or appearance only?"
21) 子路問：「聞斯行諸？」子曰：「有父兄在，如之何其聞斯行之！」冉有問：「聞斯行諸？」子曰：「聞斯行之！」公西華曰：「由也問『聞斯行諸？』子曰：『有父兄在。』求也問『聞斯行諸？』子曰：『聞斯行諸。』赤也惑，敢問？」子曰：「求也退，故進之；由也兼人，故退之。」
Student Zi Lu asks: "hear good thing do immediately?" Confucius: "have father brother alive, how to hear good thing do immediately!" Student Ran You asks: "hear good thing do immediately?" Confucius: "hear good thing immediately do!" Student Gong Xi Hua: "Student Zi Lu asks hear good thing do immediately? Confucius says have father brother alive. Student Ran You also asks hear good thing do immediately? Confucius says hear good thing immediately do! I am confused, can ask?" Confucius: "Student Ran You backing, therefore forwarding; Student Zi Lu too forward person, therefore backing."
22) 子畏於匡，顏淵後。子曰：「吾以女為死矣！」曰：「子在，回何敢死？」
Confucius dangers in Place Kuang, Student Yan Hui unite later. Confucius: "I thought you are dead!" Student Yan Hui: "Teacher still alive, how I to die?"
23) 季子然問：「仲由、冉求，可謂大臣與？」子曰：「吾以子為異之問，曾由與求之問！所謂大臣者，以道事君；不可則止。今由與求也，可謂具臣矣。」曰：「然則從之者與？」子曰：「弒父與君，亦不從也。」
Person Ji Zi asks: "Official Zhong You, Official Ran Qiu, can say Big Minister?" Confucius: "I thought you ask people difference question, but between Official Zhong You & Official Ran Qiu difference question. When say Big Ministers, is to administer Emperor; cannot must resign. Today Official Zhong You & Official Ran Qiu, can say Minister only." Person Ji Zi: "then good Ministers?" Confucius: "kill father or kill Emperor, they won't do."
24) 子路使子羔為費宰。子曰：「賊夫人之子！」子路曰：「有民人焉，有社稷焉，何必讀書，然後為學？」子曰：「是故惡夫佞者。」
Student Zi Lu (becoming Official) make Student Zi Gao as district Official. Confucius: "evil mother's son!" Student Zi Lu: "have population people population, have Temple, why study, then to apply?" Confucius: "therefore say you evil person debating."
25) 子路、曾皙、冉有、公西華侍坐。子曰：「以吾一日長乎爾，毋吾以也。居則曰：『不吾知也！』如或知爾，則何以哉？」子路率爾而對，曰：「千乘之國，攝乎大國之閒，加之以師旅，因之以飢饉；由也為之，比及三年，可使有勇，且知方也。」夫子哂之。「求，爾何如？」對曰：「方六七十，如五六十；求也為之，比及三年，可使足民；如其禮樂，以俟君子。」「赤，爾何如？」對曰：「非曰能之，願學焉；宗廟之事，如會同，端章甫，願為小相焉。」「點，爾何如？」鼓瑟希，鏗爾，舍瑟而作。對曰：「異乎三子者之撰。」子曰：「何傷乎？亦各言其志也。」曰：「莫春者，春服既成，冠者五六人，童子六七人，浴乎沂，風乎舞雩，詠而歸。」夫子喟然嘆曰：「吾與點也！」三子者出，曾皙後。曾皙曰：「夫子三子者之言何如？」子曰：「亦各言其志也已矣！」曰：「夫子何哂由也？」曰：「為國以禮，其言不讓，是故哂之。」「唯求則非邦也與？」「安見方六七十，如五六十，而非邦也者？」「唯赤則非邦也與？」「宗廟會同，非諸侯而何？赤也為之小，孰能為之大？」

Confucius: "Student Zeng Xi, what about you?" Student Zeng Xi's music softens, stops, leave music instrument & stand. Student Zeng Xi: "I different the them 3 descriptions." Confucius: "what wrong with that? Just everyone saying ambitions only." Student Zeng Xi: "summer 3 months, summer clothings on, adults 5-6 Persons, children 6-7 Persons, after cleansing, go to Rain Worship Place, make music then home." Confucius signs: "I same as Student Zeng Xi!" 3 Students leave, Student Zeng Xi stays. Student Zeng Xi: "Teacher how 3 Students words?" Confucius: "just talking everyone ambitions only!" Student Zeng Xi: "Teacher why laugh at Student Zi Lu?" Confucius: "duty Country with courtesy, his words proud, therefore laugh at." "isn't Student Ran You not Country Government?" "cannot see 60-70 miles, or 50-60 miles, not a Country?" "isn't Student Gong Xi Hua not Country Government?" "Temple Ceremonies, not Middle Size Countries then what? Student Gong Xi Hua becomes Small Officer, his capabilities who can be Big Officer?"
1) 顏淵問仁。子曰：「克己復禮為仁。一日克己復禮，天下歸仁焉。為仁由己，而由人乎哉？」顏淵曰：「請問其目？」子曰：「非禮勿視，非禮勿聽，非禮勿言，非禮勿動。」顏淵曰：「回雖不敏，請事斯語矣！」
Student Yan Hui asks Ren (humanity). Confucius: "control self back-to Rites is Ren (humanity). 1 day control self back-to Rites, under Heaven (the worlds) become Ren (humanity). To be Ren (humanity) up to self, is it up to people?" Student Yan Hui: "can ask the methods?" Confucius: "not Rite no see, no Rite no hear, no Rite no talk, no Rite no touch." Student Yan Hui: "I although not smart, will things according Teachings!"
2) 仲弓問仁。子曰：「出門如見大賓，使民如承大祭。己所不欲，勿使於人。在邦無怨，在家無怨。」仲弓曰：「雍雖不敏，請事斯語矣！」
Student Zhong Gong asks Ren (humanity). Confucius: "out house like see big guest, use population people like executing big ceremony. Self not want, not do to others. In Country no resentment, at home no resentment." Student Zhong Gong: "I although not smart, will things according Teachings!"
3) 司馬牛問仁。子曰：「仁者，其言也訒。」曰：「其言也訒，斯謂之仁已乎？」子曰：「為之難，言之得無訒乎？」
Student Si Ma Niu asks Ren (humanity). Confucius: "Ren (humanity) person, his words are also careful." Answers: "his words are also careful, is this Ren (humanity) already?" Confucius: "do Ren (humanity) difficult, talking how can no careful?"
4) 司馬牛問君子。子曰：「君子不憂不懼。」曰：「不憂不懼，斯謂之君子已乎？」子曰：「內省不疚，夫何憂何懼？」
Student Si Ma Niu asks Gentleman. Confucius: "Gentleman not worry not scare." Answers: "no worry not scare, then is Gentleman already?" Confucius: "self reflection not shameful, Gentleman how worry how scare?
5) 司馬牛憂曰：「人皆有兄弟，我獨亡！」子夏曰：「商聞之矣：『死生有命，富貴在天。』君子敬而無失，與人恭而有禮，四海之內，皆兄弟也。君子何患乎無兄弟也？」
Student Si Ma Niu worries: "everyone has brothers, only I don't have!" Student Zi Xia: "I hears people say: death & life have fate, wealth & high-status depends on Heaven. Gentleman respectfully & no mistake, with people polite & courteous, within 4 seas, everyone is brothers. Gentleman why worry no brothers?"
6) 子張問明。子曰：「浸潤之譖，膚受之愬，不行焉，可謂明也已矣。浸潤之譖，膚受之愬，不行焉，可謂遠也已矣。」
Student Zi Zhang asks seeing through deceit. Confucius: "like water soaking thorough to see through flattery, self injury to complaint, all cannot succeed, can say seeing through deceit already. Like water soaking thorough to see through flattery, self injury to complaint, all cannot succeed, can say far-sighted already."
7) 子貢問政。子曰：「足食，足兵，民信之矣。」子貢曰：「必不得已而去，於斯三者何先？」子曰：「去兵。」子貢曰：「必不得已而去，於斯二者何先？」子曰：「去食。自古皆有死，民無信不立。」
Student Zi Gong asks Government. Confucius: "enough foods, enough soldiers, let people trust Government." Student Zi Gong: "if necessary need to eliminate, which 3 go first?" Confucius: "eliminate soldiers." Student Zi Gong: "if necessary need to eliminate, which 2 go first?" Confucius: "eliminate foods. Since ancient there is death, people without trust in Government cannot establish."
8) 棘子成曰：「君子質而已矣，何以文為？」子貢曰：「惜乎，夫子之說君子也，駟不及舌！文猶質也，質猶文也。虎豹之鞟，猶犬羊之鞟？」
Student Ji Zi Cheng: "Gentleman inside full is enough, why the writing capability?" Student Zi Gong: "pity, Confucius say Gentleman, do not change his tongue! Writing needs inside full, inside full needs writing. Like tiger & leopard's skins, cannot be alike like dog & goat's skins."
9) 哀公問於有若曰：「年饑，用不足，如之何？」有若對曰：「盍徹乎？」曰：「二，吾猶不足，如之何其徹也？」對曰：「百姓足，君孰與不足？百姓不足，君孰與足？」
The emperor Ai Gong asks Student You Ruo: "famine years, not enough to spend, how?" Student You Ruo answers: "why not make tax 10%?" "20%, already not enough, how at 10%?" Answers: "when people enough, Emperor where got not enough? When people not enough, emperor where got enough?"
10) 子張問崇德，辨惑。子曰：「主忠信，徒義，崇德也。愛之欲其生，惡之欲其死；既欲其生，又欲其死，是惑也！」
Student Zi Zhang asks heavy virtues, differentiate confusion. Confucius: "main loyalty & trustworthiness, then righteousness, is heavy virtues. Love want him live, hate want him die; want him live, also want him die, is confusion!"
11) 齊景公問政於孔子。孔子對曰：「君君，臣臣，父父，子子。」公曰：「善哉！信如君不君，臣不臣，父不父，子不子，雖有粟，吾得而食諸？」
Emperor Qi Jing Gong asks Confucius about Government. Confucius answers: "emperor is emperor, official is official, father is father, son is son." Gong: "right! If emperor is not emperor, official is not official, father is not father, son is not son, even there is official pay, can you enjoy them?"
12) 子曰：「片言可以折獄者，其由也與！」子路無宿諾。
Confucius: "a few words can settle a court case, only Student Zi Lu!" Student Zi Lu never forsake a promise.
13) 子曰：「聽訟，吾猶人也；必也，使無訟乎！」
Confucius: "sentencing court case, no one can better me; best, no need court case!"
14) 子張問政。子曰：「居之無倦，行之以忠。」
Student Zi Zhang asks Government. Confucius: "to be at governing no tiring, actions with loyalty."
15) 子曰：「君子成人之美，不成人之惡；小人反是。」
Confucius: "Gentleman complete people beautiful, not complete people ugly; petty people do opposite."
16) 季康子問政於孔子。孔子對曰：「政者正也，子帥以正，孰敢不正？」
Official Ji Kang asks Government from Confucius. Confucius answers: "Government is being upright, you yourself upright, who dare not upright?"
17) 季康子患盜，問於孔子。孔子對曰：「茍子之不欲，雖賞之不竊！」
Official Ji Kang country is infected with robbers, asks Confucius. Confucius answers: "if you top people do not have strong desires, even you give rewards no one will want to steal!"
18) 季康子問政於孔子曰：「如殺無道，以就有道，何如？」孔子對曰：「子為政，焉用殺？子欲善，而民善矣！君子之德，風；小人之德，草；草上之風，必偃。」
Official Ji Kang asks Government from Confucius: "if kill those who no Tao (way), to uphold Tao (way), how?" Confucius: "you as government, why kill? If you desire good, then the people desire good also! Gentleman's virtues, wind; petty person's virtues, grass; wind on grass, definitely blown down."
19) 子張問：「士何如斯可謂之達矣？」子曰：「何哉？爾所謂達者！」子張對曰：「在邦必聞，在家必聞。」子曰：「是聞也，非達也。夫達也者：質直而好義，察言而觀色，慮以下人；在邦必達，在家必達。夫聞也者：色取仁而行違，居之不疑；在邦必聞，在家必聞。」
Student Zi Zhang asks: "a scholar who to be what call reached?" Confucius: "what? What do you mean reached!" Student Zi Zhang: "in country everyone hear name, in home everyone hear name." Confucius: "this is heard, not reached. Gentleman reached is: quality upright & love righteousness, observe speeches & see face, humble let below people; in country definitely reached, in home definitely reached. See materials & forsake Ren (humanity) will not do, without a doubt; in country definitely heard, in home definitely heard."
20) 樊遲從遊於舞雩之下。曰：「敢問崇德、脩慝、辨惑？」子曰：「善哉問！先事後得，非崇德與？攻其惡，無攻人之惡，非脩慝與？一朝之忿，忘其身以及其親，非惑與？」
Student Fan Chi with Confucius strolling down Altar below. Says: "dare to ask heavy virtues, get rid of heart evil, judging doubts?" Confucius: "good questions! First do then ask get, isn't it heavy virtues? Attack self evil, do not attack other people evil, isn't this get rid of heart evil? One time angry, forgetting self & his parents, isn't this doubts?"
21) 樊遲問仁。子曰：「愛人。」問知。子曰：「知人。」樊遲未達。子曰：「舉直錯諸枉，能使枉者直。」樊遲退，見子夏曰：「鄉也，吾見於夫子而問知。子曰：『舉直錯諸枉，能使枉者直。』何謂也？」子夏曰：「富哉言乎！舜有天下，選於眾，舉皋陶，不仁者遠矣；湯有天下，選於眾，舉伊尹，不仁者遠矣。」
Student Fan Chi asks Ren (humanity). Confucius: "love people." Asks know. Confucius: "know people." Student Fan Chi do not understand. Confucius: "elect upright abolish those not upright, can make those not upright upright." Student Fan Chi retreat, meet Student Zi Xia & asks: "just now, I see Confucius & asks know. Confucius: select upright abolish those not upright, can make those not upright upright. What means?" Student Zi Xia: "meaning a lots inside words! Sage-King Shun has the Empire, select from crowd, elect Official Gao Dao, not Ren (humanity) people go far; Sage-King Tang has Empire, select from crowd, elect Official Yi Yin, not Ren (humanity) people go far."
22) 子貢問友。子曰：「忠告而善道之，不可則止，毋自辱焉。」
Student Zi Gong asks friendship. Confucius: "warning to guide to Tao (way), cannot over, in case get scolded."
23) 曾子曰：「君子以文會友；以友輔仁。」
Student Zeng Zi: "Gentleman use composition to meet friends; use friends to build Ren (humanity)."
1) 子路問政。子曰：「先之，勞之。」請益。曰：「無倦。」
Student Zi Lu asks Government. Confucius: "do first before governing, tiredly governing." Asks more. Confucius: "do these without stop."
2) 仲弓為季氏宰，問政。子曰：「先有司，赦小過，舉賢才。」曰：「焉知賢才而舉之？」曰：「舉爾所知；爾所不知，人其舍諸？」
Student Zhong Gong become House Ji Home Official, asks government. Confucius: "leads by example, forgive small mistakes, elect good people." Says: "how to know good people to elect?" Confucius: "elect those you know, those you don't know, you think other people will not recommend?"
3) 子路曰：「衛君待子而為政，子將奚先？」子曰：「必也正名乎！」子路曰：「有是哉？子之迂也！奚其正？」子曰：「野哉，由也！君子於其所不知，蓋闕如也。名不正，則言不順；言不順，則事不成；事不成，則禮樂不興；禮樂不興，則刑罰不中；刑罰不中，則民無所措手足。故君子名之必可言也，言之必可行也。君子於其言，無所茍而已矣！」
Student Zi Lu: "Country Wei Emperor let you govern, Teacher first do what?" Confucius: "definitely must correct name!" Student Zi Lu: "have this thing? Teacher out of reality! Why correct name?" Confucius: "what say that, Student Zi Lu! Gentleman if don't know, put aside as it is. Name not correct, then speech not smooth; speech not smooth, then work cannot do; work cannot do, then Rites cannot spread; Rites cannot spread, then punishments not right; punishments not right, then people nothing helpless. Therefore Gentleman's name must be able say out, say out definitely can do. Gentleman in regard what he says, never easy any how!"
4) 樊遲請學稼。子曰：「吾不如老農。」請學為圃。曰：「吾不如老圃。」樊遲出，子曰：「小人哉，樊須也！上好禮，則民莫敢不敬；上好義，則民莫敢不服；上好信，則民莫敢不用情；夫如是，則四方之民，襁負其子而至矣。焉用稼？」
The person Fan Chi asks learning farming. Confucius: "I not as good as farmer." Asks learning as gardening. Confucius: "I not as good as gardener." The person Fan Chi go out, Confucius: "he is petty person, the person Fan Chi! High position loves Rites, the people dare not not respect; high position loves Righteousness, the people dare not not submit; high position loves Trustworthiness, the people dare not not not honest; if Emperor is like that, then 4 sides people, will carry their children to come to submit. Need to use farming?"
5) 子曰：「誦詩三百，授之以政，不達；使於四方，不能專對；雖多，亦奚以為！」
Confucius: "recite poems 300 hundreds, given to govern, cannot understand enough; given to envoy 4 distance, cannot handle; although study a lots, what the use!"
6) 子曰：「其身正，不令而行；其身不正，雖令不從。」
Confucius: "his body actions right, need not issue orders will execute; his body actions not right, even issue orders will not execute."
7) 子曰：「魯、衛之政，兄弟也。」
Confucius: "Country Lu, Country Wei's Governments, like brothers."
8) 子謂：衛公子荊善居室。始有，曰：「苟合矣。」少有，曰：「茍完矣。」富有，曰：「茍美矣。」
Confucius praises: Country Wei Person Jing good at living home. When things just have, he says: "is enough." Addition a bit, he says: "almost perfect." When wealthy enough, he says: "beautiful."
9) 子適衛，冉有僕。子曰：「庶矣哉！」冉有曰：「既庶矣，又何加焉？」曰：「富之。」曰：「既富矣，又何加焉？」曰：「教之。」
Confucius comes to Country Wei, Student Ran You as driver. Confucius: "so many citizens!" Student Ran You: "when many citizens, what next?" Confucius: "make them rich." Says: "when citizens rich, what next?" Confucius: "educate."
10) 子曰：「茍有用我者，［諅＊］月而已可也；三年有成。」
Confucius: "if use me in governing, 1 year have accomplishments; 3 years Big Government."
11) 子曰：「『善人為邦百年，亦可以勝殘去殺矣。』誠哉是言也！」
Confucius: "ancient people say: good people governing Country hundred years, can win over bad people get rid death punishments." Sincerity indeed true these words!"
12) 子曰：「如有王者，必世而後仁。」
Confucius: "if have Sage-King governing, definitely 30 years later Ren (humanity) in the Empire."
13) 子曰：「茍正其身矣，於從政乎何有？不能正其身，如正人何？」
Confucius: "if correct self, then go government what difficult? Cannot correct self, how to correct others?"
14) 冉有退朝，子曰：「何晏也？」對曰：「有政。」子曰：「其事也！如有政，雖不吾以，吾其與聞之！」
Student Ren You comes back from government ceremony. Confucius: "why so late?" Answers: "have government." Confucius: "that normal things! If have government, although I no longer in Government, but I will be involved!"
15) 定公問：「一言而可以興邦，有諸？」孔子對曰：「言不可以若是其幾也！人之言曰：『為君難，為臣不易。』如知為君之難也，不幾乎一言而興邦乎？」曰：「一言而喪邦，有諸？」孔子對曰：「言不可以若是其幾也！人之言曰：『予無樂乎為君，唯其言而莫予違也。』如其善而莫之違也，不亦善乎？如不善而莫之違也，不幾乎一言而喪邦乎？」
Emperor Ding Gong asks: "one word can bring up a country, has this thing?" Confucius answers: "say things cannot predict this! Ancient people has said: being Emperor is difficult, being Officials is not easy. If know being Emperor is difficult, isn't this predicting one word can bring up a country?" Says: "one word can bring down a country, has this thing?" Confucius answers: "say things cannot predict this! Ancient people say: "has no enjoyment as Emperor, only his words no one dare go against." If his words are good & dare not go against, isn't it good? If his words are no good & dare not go against, isn't this one word bring down the country?"
16) 葉公問政。子曰：「近者說，遠者來。」
Emperor Ye Gong asks Government. Confucius: "near people happily say, far people come towards."
17) 子夏為莒父宰，問政。子曰：「無欲速，無見小利；欲速則不達，見小利則大事不成。」
Student Zi Xia as Ju Fu Official, asks Government. Confucius: "no desire fast, no see small gain; desire fast cannot reach, see small gains then big tasks cannot accomplish."
18) 葉公語孔子曰：「吾黨有直躬者，其父攘羊而子證之。」孔子曰：「吾黨之直者異於是，父為子隱，子為父隱，直在其中矣。」
Emperor Ding Gong tells Confucius: "I have my people upright persons, his father steals a goat & the son reports it." Confucius: "my people upright is different from this, father helps son hide, son helps father hide, upright in this."
19) 樊遲問仁。子曰：「居處恭，執事敬，與人忠；雖之夷狄，不可棄也。」
Student Fan Chi asks Ren (humanity). Confucius: "live place humble, execute things respectfully, with people loyal; even in barbaric places, cannot abandon."
20) 子貢問曰：「何如斯可謂之士矣？」子曰：「行己有恥，使於四方，不辱君命，可謂士矣。」曰：「敢問其次？」曰：「宗族稱孝焉，鄉黨稱弟焉。」曰：「敢問其次？」曰：「言必信，行必果，硜硜然，小人哉！抑亦可以為次矣。」曰：「今之從政者何如？」子曰：「噫！斗筲之人，何足算也！」
Student Zi Gong asks: "how do then can say a Shi (gentleman)?" Confucius: "do things have shame, send to 4 places, do not shame Emperor's Order, can be called a Shi (gentleman)." Says: "can ask second meaning?" Confucius: "inside people race can called filial, his people can called him brotherly." Says: "can ask third meaning?" Confucius: "speeches have trustworthiness, doing have determination, unlike fakeness, petty person! Can be said third meaning." Says: "today doing government how?" Confucius: "sign! They can only take salary, how be worthy!"
21) 子曰：「不得中行而與之，必也狂狷乎！狂者進取，狷者有所不為也。」
Confucius: "cannot Mean (middle) & give Tao to him, definitely will crazy & cannot keep! Better to give crazy, then to give those who cannot keep."
22) 子曰：「南人有言曰：『人而無恆，不可以作巫醫。』善夫！」「不恆其德，或承之羞。」子曰：「不占而已矣。」
Confucius: "southern people have saying: person no long-time, cannot become witch doctor. That correct!" Book of Change: "cannot long-time, if divine can get shame." Confucius: "for cannot long-time not to divine only."
23) 子曰：「君子和而不同，小人同而不和。」
Confucius: "Gentleman get along but different, petty person same but cannot get along."
24) 子貢問曰：「鄉人皆好之，何如？」子曰：「未可也。」「鄉人皆惡之，何如？」子曰：「未可也，不如鄉人之善者好之，其不善者惡之。」
Student Zi Gong asks: "neighbourhood people all love, how?" Confucius: "still not good." "neighbourhood people all hate, how?" Confucius: "still not good, worse than neighbourhood good people love, neighbourhood bad people hate."
25) 子曰：「君子易事而難說也；說之不以道，不說也；及其使人也，器之。小人難事而易說也；說之雖不以道，說也；及其使人也，求備焉。」
Confucius: "Gentleman easy to work with but difficult to please, use wrong ways to please him, not happy; when use people, depends on capability. Petty person difficult to work with but easy to please, use wrong ways to please him, happy; when use people, desire a lots."
26) 子曰：「君子泰而不驕，小人驕而不泰。」
Confucius: "Gentleman confident but not proud, petty person proud but not confident."
27) 子曰：「剛毅木訥，近仁。」
Confucius: "hard determined speech quiet, near Ren (humanity)."
28) 子路曰：「何如斯可謂之士矣？」子曰：「切切偲偲，怡怡如也，可謂士矣。朋友切切偲偲，兄弟怡怡。」
Student Zi Lu: "how to become Shi (gentleman)?" Confucius: "encouraging, happy like that, can means Shi (gentleman). With friends encouraging, with brothers happy like that,"
29) 子曰：「善人教民七年，亦可以即戎矣。」
Confucius: "good Person can teach people in 7 years, then ready go war for Country."
30) 子曰：「以不教民戰，是謂棄之。」
Confucius: "if not taught & ask people to go war, is asking for failure desertion."
1) 憲問恥。子曰：「邦有道，穀；邦無道，穀，恥也。」
Student Xian asks shame. Confucius: "Country has Tao (way), just get salary; country no Tao (way), just get salary, are shame."
2) 「克、伐、怨、欲，不行焉，可以為仁矣？」子曰：「可以為難矣，仁則吾不知也。」
Student Xian asks: "winning heart, boastfulness, resentment, desire, all overcome, can say Ren (humanity)?" Confucius: "if that is hard to get, is Ren (humanity) or not I do not know."
3) 子曰：「士而懷居，不足以為士矣！」
Confucius: "Shi (gentleman) comfortable with present living, cannot call himself a Shi (gentleman)!"
4) 子曰：「邦有道，危言危行；邦無道，危行言孫。」
Confucius: "Country has Tao (way), outspoken speeches & outspoken actions; country no Tao (way), outspoken actions but careful speeches."
5) 子曰：「有德者必有言，有言者不必有德。仁者必有勇，勇者不必有仁。」
Confucius: "have virtues Person definitely has speeches, has speeches person may not have virtues. Ren (humanity) Person definitely has courage, courage person may not has Ren (humanity)."
6) 南宮［括＊］問於孔子曰：「羿善射，奡盪舟，俱不得其死然。禹稷躬稼而有天下。」夫子不答。南宮［括＊］出，子曰：「君子哉若人！尚德哉若人！」
Person Nan Gong Kuo asks Confucius: "person Yi good at archery, person Ao good at boat wars, all no good ends. Sage-King Yu good at farming get the world under Heaven." Confucius does not answer. Person Nan Gong Kuo out, Confucius: "Gentleman is like this person! High in virtues is like this person!"
7) 子曰：「君子而不仁者有矣夫！未有小人而仁者也！」
Confucius: "Gentleman not Ren (humanity) slight should have! But no petty person has Ren (humanity)!"
8) 子曰：「愛之，能勿勞乎？忠焉，能勿誨乎？」
Confucius: "love children, can don't let them do hard works? Loyal to emperor, can don't tell his misgivings?"
9) 子曰：「為命：裨諶草創之，世叔討論之，行人子羽脩飾之，東里子產潤色之。」
Confucius: "on diplomacy documents: Official Bi Chen do drafting, Official Shi Shu discuss, Official Zi Yu correct, Official Zi Chan add colour."
10) 或問子產。子曰：「惠人也。」問子西。曰：「彼哉彼哉！」問管仲。曰：「人也，奪伯氏駢邑三百，飯疏食；沒齒無怨言。」
Someone asks Person Zi Chan. Confucius: "help people." Asks person Zi Xi. Confucius: "nothing to say nothing to say!" Asks person Guan Zhong. Confucius: "he, conquer Person Bo Shi of 300 acres of land, Person Bo Shi only can eat plain rice; in the end no resentment words."
11) 子曰：「貧而無怨，難。富而無驕，易。」
Confucius: "poor & no resentment, difficult. Rich & not proud, easy."
12) 子曰：「孟公綽為趙、魏老則優，不可以為膝、薛大夫。」
Confucius: "Person Meng Gong Chuo can be Person Zhou, Person Wei family official, but cannot be Country Qi, Xue Official."
13) 子路問成人。子曰：「若臧武仲之知，公綽之不欲，卞莊子之勇，冉求之藝；文之以禮樂，亦可以為成人矣！」曰：「今之成人者，何必然？見利思義，見危授命，久要不忘平生之言，亦可以為成人矣！」
Student Zi Lu asks how to be complete Man. Confucius: "like Person Zang Wu Zhong's knowledge, Person Meng Gong Chuo's no desire, Person Bian Zhuang Zi's courage, Person Ran Jiu's talent; with language & with Rite Music, then can become a complete Man!" Confucius adds: "today complete man, need not? See benefit thinks of Righteousness, see danger remember Mission, long time never forget this life promise, can also be known as complete man!"
14) 子問公叔文子於公明賈，曰：「信乎？夫子不言、不笑、不取乎？」公明賈對曰：「以告者過也！夫子時然後言，人不厭其言；樂然後笑，人不厭其笑；義然後取，人不厭其取。」子曰：「其然！豈其然乎？」
Confucius asks about Person Gong Shu Wen Zi from Person Gong Ming Jia: "is it true? He seldom speak, not laugh, & do not take money?" Person Gong Ming Jia answers: "people who tell you over! He right moment then speak, people do not hate his speeches; happy then laugh, people do not hate his laughter; Righteous then take money, people do not hate his take money." Confucius: "is that right! Only like that?"
15) 子曰：「臧武仲以防，求為後於魯。雖曰不要君，吾不信也。」
Confucius: "person Zan Wu Zhong leave country, asks Country Lu to make his offspring governor. Although say do not want Emperor, I do not believe."
16) 子曰：「晉文公譎而不正，齊桓公正而不譎。」
Confucius: "Emperor Jin Wen Gong good at power play & not good at normal situation, Emperor Qi Huan Gong good at normal situation & not good at power play."
17) 子路曰：「桓公殺公子糾，召忽死之，管仲不死。曰，未仁乎？」子曰：「桓公九合諸侯，不以兵車，管仲之力也。如其仁！如其仁！」
Student Zi Lu: "Emperor Huan Gong kills Person Gong Zi Jiu, Person Zhao Hu dies for him, Person Guan Zhong not die. Ask, is Person Guan Zhong not Ren (humanity)?" Confucius: "Emperor Huan Gong nine times meet Sub-country Emperors, not use military vehicles, is Person Guan Zhong's credits. That is Ren (humanity)! That is Ren (humanity)!"
18) 子貢曰：「管仲非仁者與？桓公殺公子糾，不能死，又相之。」子曰：「管仲相桓公，霸諸侯，一匡天下，民到于今受其賜；微管仲，吾其被髮左衽矣！豈若匹夫匹婦之為諒也，自經於溝瀆，而莫之知也！」
Student Zi Gong: "Person Guan Zhong not Ren (humanity) person right? Emperor Huan Gong kills his master Gong Zi Jiu, he does not commit suicide, & act as Prime Minister for Emperor Huan Gong." Confucius: "Person Guan Zhong prime minister Emperor Huan Gong, win over all Sub-Countries, one government under Heaven, the people till today get benefits; because of Person Guan Zhong, I need not hair drops on clothings as barbarian! He where will like normal men normal women for small righteous, commit suicide, & no one know!"
19) 公叔文子之臣大夫僎，與文子同升諸公。子聞之曰：「可以為文矣！」
Person Gong Shu Wen Zi is famous home Official, with his Master Wen Zi together becomes Country Officials. Confucius hears & says: "can be known as Wen (language composition)!"
20) 子言衛靈公之無道也。康子曰：「夫如是，奚而不喪？」孔子曰：「仲叔圉治賓客，祝鮀治宗廟，王孫賈治軍旅。夫如是，奚其喪？」
Confucius says Wei Country emperor Ling Gong no Tao (way). Person Kang Zi: "if he is so, why not die off?" Confucius: "he uses person Zhong Shu to diplomat guests, person Zhu Tuo to govern temples, person Wang Sun Jia to govern army. If like that, how to die off."
21) 子曰：「其言之不怍，則為之也難！」
Confucius: "those with words who can't keep, want them to do very difficult!"
22) 陳成子弒簡公。孔子沐浴而朝，告於哀公曰：「陳恆弒其君，請討之。」公曰：「告夫三子。」孔子曰：「以吾從大夫之後，不敢不告也！君曰：『告夫三子』者！」之三子告，不可。孔子曰：「以吾從大夫之後，不敢不告也！」
The official Chen Cheng Zi kills his emperor Jian Gong. Confucius shower then go morning ceremony, tells his Emperor Ai Gong: "official Chen Cheng Zi kills his emperor, please send army to take him." Emperor: "tell the 3 Generals." Confucius: "after I become an Official, cannot don't report! Emperor says: tell the 3 Generals!" After telling the 3 Generals, cannot send army. Confucius: "after I become an Official, cannot don't report!"
23) 子路問事君。子曰：「勿欺也，而犯之。」
Student Zi Lu asks administer Emperor. Confucius: "do not lie to him, & tell him what he don't want hear."
24) 子曰：「君子上達，小人下達。」
Confucius: "Gentleman up reach, petty person down reach."
25) 子曰：「古之學者為己，今之學者為人。」
Confucius: "ancient scholars for himself cultivation, now scholars for others to know him."
26) 蘧伯玉使人於孔子。孔子與之坐而問焉。曰：「夫子何為？」對曰：「夫子欲寡其過而未能也。」使者出。子曰：「使乎！使乎！」
Person Qu Bo Yu sends envoy to Confucius. Confucius sits with envoy & asks: "how is your Master?" Answers: "Master cut down desires & mistakes but still unable." Envoy goes out. Confucius: "what an envoy! What an envoy!"
27) 曾子曰：「君子思不出其位。」
Student Zeng Zi: "Gentleman does not think out of his position."
28) 子曰：「君子恥其言而過其行。」
Confucius: "Gentleman ashamed that his words are over his actions."
29) 子曰：「君子道者三，我無能焉：仁者不憂；知者不惑；勇者不懼。」子貢曰：「夫子自道也！」
Confucius: "Gentleman has 3 things, all I do not have: Ren (humanity) Person no worry; Wise Person no doubt; Courage Person no scare." Student Zi Gong: "Master all have!"
30) 子貢方人。子曰：「賜也，賢乎哉？夫我則不暇！」
Student Zi Gong always criticize people. Confucius: "Student Zi Gong, you yourself virtuous? I myself no time to criticize people!"
31) 子曰：「不患人之不己知，患其不能也。」
Confucius: "no worry others not know self, worry self not capable."
32) 子曰：「不逆詐，不億不信；抑亦先覺者，是賢乎？」
Confucius: "no guess fraud, no guess people do not trust; but know beforehand, is virtuous?"
33) 微生畝謂孔子曰：「丘，何為是栖栖者與？無乃為佞乎？」孔子曰：「非敢為佞也，疾固也！」
Person Wei Sheng Mu asks Confucius: "you, why go homeless wandering telling Tao to e/Emperors? Is it so to become Official?" Confucius: "do not dare to become Official, just the world is sick!"
34) 子曰：「驥不稱其力，稱其德也。」
Confucius: "thousand miles horse is praised not for her strength, but praise for her virtues."
35) 或曰：「以德報怨，何如？」子曰：「何以報德？以直報怨，以德報德。」
Someone asks: "use virtues repay enmity, how?" Confucius: "how then to repay virtues? Use upright repay enmity, use virtues repay virtues."
36) 子曰：「莫我知也天！」子貢曰：「何為其莫知子也？」子曰：「不怨天，不尤人，下學而上達：知我者，其天乎！」
Confucius: "know me only Heaven!" Student Zi Gong: "don't all students know you Master?" Confucius: "no blame Heaven, no blame people, learn from below to reach upper level: know me, only Heaven!"
37) 公伯寮愬子路於季孫。子服景伯以告，曰：「夫子固有惑志；於公伯寮，吾力猶能肆諸市朝。」子曰：「道之將行也與，命也；道之將廢也與，命也。公伯寮其如命何！」
The person Gong Bo Liao slander Student Zi Lu to Official Ji Sun. Person Zi Fu Jing Bo tells, says: "I still have influence; for person Gong Bo Liao, I can punish him to lay his body in front courthouse." Confucius: "Tao (way) if to execute will become big; Tao (way) if to failure will become small, Fate. The person Gong Bo Liao how to fight Fate!"
38) 子曰：「賢者辟世，其次辟地，其次辟色，其次辟言。」子曰：「作者七人矣。」
Confucius: "virtuous Persons avoid world, next avoid bad country, next avoid bad colours, next avoid bad words." Confucius: "do these Persons already 7 numbers."
39) 子路宿於石門。晨門曰：「奚自？」子路曰：「自孔氏。」曰：「是知其不可而為之者與？」
Student Zi Lu sleeps outside city door. Morning open city door: "where are you from?" Student Zi Lu: "from Confucius house." Says: "is it from the Person who knows cannot be done still go & do house?"
40) 子擊磬於衛。有荷蕢而過孔氏之門者，曰：「有心哉，擊磬乎！」既而曰：「鄙哉，硜硜乎！莫己知也，斯己而已矣！『深則厲，淺則揭。』」子曰：「果哉！未之難矣！」
Confucius hit tiles as music in Country Wei. Have Person with backpack run cross Confucius house, says: "have heart problems, this hit tiles Person!" Then says: "very shallow, this hit tiles Person! Do not know himself, if others not know him then stop! Shouldn't water deep hand need not carry clothes, water shallow then hand carry clothes." Confucius: "he is like that! If need not care not difficult!"
41) 子張曰：「書云：『高宗諒陰，三年不言。』何謂也？」子曰：「何必高宗？古之人皆然。君薨，百官總己以聽於冢宰，三年。」
Student Zi Zhang: "Book Scripture: "High Emperor dies, 3 years no speech. What that?" Confucius: "not just High Emperor? Ancient people all like that. When Emperor dies, all Officials listen to Prime Minister (new Emperor no speech), 3 years."
42) 子曰：「上好禮，則民易使也。」
Confucius: "high position loves Rites, then people easy to govern."
43) 子路問君子。子曰：「脩己以敬。」曰：「如斯而己乎？」曰：「脩己以安人。」曰：「如斯而己乎？」曰：「脩己以安百姓。脩己以安百姓，堯舜其猶病諸！」
Student Zi Lu asks about Gentleman. Confucius: "cultivate self to do things respectfully." Student Zi Lu: "is that all?" Confucius: "cultivate self to pacify people." Student Zi Lu: "is that all?" Confucius: "cultivate self to pacify all the people. Cultivate self to pacify all the people, even Sage-King Yao & Sage-King Shun have difficulties!"
44) 原壤夷俟。子曰：「幼而不孫弟，長而無述焉，老而不死，是為賊！」以仗叩其脛。
The person Yuan Rang greets Confucius impolitely. Confucius: "when young you do not respect elder, when old you have no achievements, old & still not dead, is bad people!" Confucius use stick to hit his leg.
45) 闕黨童子將命。或問之曰：「益者與？」子曰：「吾見其居於位也，見其與先生并行也。非求益者也，欲速成者也。」
Place Que Dang child is given adult messenger duty. Someone asks: "is he willing to learn?" Confucius: "I see him in adult position, see him walking with adult. Not willing to learn type, but want to progress fast type."
1) 衛靈公問陳於孔子。孔子對曰：「俎豆之事，則嘗聞之矣；軍旅之事，未之學也。」明日遂行。
Emperor Wei Ling Gong asks warfare from Confucius. Confucius answers: "temple Rites, I have learned; warfare matters, I have not learned." Next day departure.
2) 在陳绝糧。從者病，莫能興。子路慍見曰：「君子亦有窮乎？」子曰：「君子固窮；小人窮斯濫矣。」
In Country Chen food starvation. Followers sick, cannot rise. Student Zi Lu angrily: "Gentleman can be trapped?" Confucius: "Gentleman trapped but standing; petty person trapped then anyhow."
3) 子曰：「賜也，女以予為多學而識之者與？」對曰：「然，非與？」曰：「非也！予一以貫之。」
Confucius: "Student Zi Gong, you think my knowledge from my hardworking?" Answers: "yes, isn't it so?" Confucius: "no! It is from one Point."
4) 子曰：「由，知德者鮮矣！」
Confucius: "Student Zi Lu, know virtues people too few!"
5) 子曰：「無為而治者，其舜也與！夫何為哉？恭己正南面而已矣！」
Confucius: "no action to govern Person, only Sage-King Shun can! How He does it? Respect self acts on his Emperor position only."
6) 子張問行。子曰：「言忠信，行篤敬，雖蠻貊之邦行矣；言不忠信，行不篤敬，雖州里行乎哉？立，則見其參於前也；在舆，則見其倚於衛也；夫然後行。」子張書諸紳。
Student Zi Zhang asks action. Confucius: "speech loyal & trustworthy, action heavy & respectfully, even in barbaric places can do; if speech not loyal & not trustworthy, action not heavy & not respectfully, even in civilized places how to do? Stand, the 2 in place; Sit in cart, the 2 in place; then you can action." Student Zi Zhang write the 2 in his shirt sleeve.
7) 子曰：「直哉史魚！邦有道，如矢；邦無道，如矢。君子哉蘧伯玉！邦有道，則仕；邦無道，則可券而懷之。」
Confucius: "upright is Person Shi Yu! Country has Tao (way), like arrow shooting; country no Tao (way), like arrow shooting. Gentleman is Person Qu Bo Yu! Country has Tao (way), become Official; country no Tao (way), then hide in seclusion."
8) 子曰：「可與言，而不與之言，失人；不可與言，而與之言，失言。知者不失人；亦不失言。」
Confucius: "can talk with, but do not talk, miss person; cannot talk with, & talk with, miss words. Wise Person do not miss person;& do not miss words."
9) 子曰：「志士仁人，無求生以害仁，有殺身以成仁。」
Confucius: "vow for Ren (humanity) Person, no ask live to kill Ren (humanity), only kill body to become Ren (humanity)."
10) 子貢問為仁。子曰：「工欲善其事，必先利其器。居是邦也，事其大夫之賢者，友其士之仁者。」
Student Zi Gong asks how cultivate Ren (humanity). Confucius: "work desire to get work done, must first need its equipments. Live in Country, work with Big Officials who are virtuous, friends with Gentlemen who have Ren (humanity)."
11) 顏淵問為邦。子曰：「行夏之時，乘殷之輅，服周之冕，樂則韶舞。放鄭聲，遠佞人；鄭聲淫，佞人殆。」
Student Yen Hui asks governing Country. Confucius: "use Dynasty Xia calendar system, ride Dynasty Yin wooden car, clothes Dynasty Zhou clothings, music use Shao Music. Away from country Zheng music, away from court petty persons; country Zheng music incite desires, court petty persons bring downfall.
12) 子曰：「人無遠慮，必有近憂。」
Confucius: "people no long planning, definitely will have near worry."
13) 子曰：「已矣乎！吾未見好德如好色者也！」
Confucius: "Give up! I never see love virtues like love sex person!"
14) 子曰：「臧文仲，其竊位者與？知柳下惠之賢，而不與立也。」
Confucius: "person Zang Wen Zhong, can only rob position isn't it? Or else know Person Liu Xia Hui is virtuous, why not elect him Official."
15) 子曰：「躬自厚，而薄責於人，則遠怨矣！」
Confucius: "self-examine strict, examine others light, then away from resentment!"
16) 子曰：「不曰『如之何，如之何』者，吾末如之何也已矣！」
Confucius: "no say thinking what I hear, thinking what I hear person, I also do not know what to do with him."
17) 子曰：「羣居終日，言不及義，好行小慧，難矣哉！」
Confucius: "gathering whole day, say no righteous, do some smart things, hard to accomplish!"
18) 子曰：「君子義以為質，禮以行之，孫以出之，信以成之；君子哉！」
Confucius: "Gentleman as Righteousness as value, Rites to doing, humble to outward, trustworthiness to accomplish; is Gentleman!"
19) 子曰：「君子病無能焉，不病人之不己知也。」
Confucius: "Gentleman sick no capabilities, not sick people do not know him."
20) 子曰：「君子疾沒世而名不稱焉。」
Confucius: "Gentleman worry die from world no good name."
21) 子曰：「君子求諸己，小人求諸人。」
Confucius: "Gentleman asks himself, petty person asks others."
22) 子曰：「君子矜而不爭，羣而不黨。」
Confucius: "Gentleman respectfully & no compete, gather & no gang."
23) 子曰：「君子不以言舉人，不以人廢言。」
Confucius: "Gentleman no use his words to elect him to Official, not because of him disregard his words."
24) 子貢問曰：「有一言而可以終身行之者乎？」子曰：「其恕乎！己所不欲，勿施於人。」
Student Zi Gong asks: "is there one word that can be used whole lifetime actions." Confucius: "only Shu (for others)! What you don't want, don't do it to others."
25) 子曰：「吾之於人也，誰毀誰譽？如有所譽者，其有所詩矣。斯民也，三代之所以直道而行也。」
Confucius: "I treat people, do not dare criticize who do not dare praise who? If have praise people, confirm they have done something good. These people, have 3 Dynasty of good Tao to guide their actions."
26) 子曰：「吾猶及史之闕文也；有馬者，借人乘之。今亡矣夫！」
Confucius: "I can don't fill in blanks in history books; like have horse person, lend others to ride. Today such people don't exist."
27) 子曰：「巧言亂德。小不忍，則亂大謀。」
Confucius: "fancy words corrupt virtues. Small don't endure, then spoil big plans."
28) 子曰：「眾惡之，必察焉；眾好之，必察焉。」
Confucius: "everyone hates him, must confirm bad; everyone loves him, must confirm good."
29) 子曰：「人能弘道，非道弘人。」
Confucius: "person can spread Tao (way), not Tao (way) to spread person."
30) 子曰：「過而不改，是謂過矣！」
Confucius: "mistake no change, is real mistake!"
31) 子曰：「吾嘗終日不食，終夜不寢，以思；無益，不如學也。」
Confucius: "I try whole day no eat, whole night no sleep, for thinking; no help, better learning."
32) 子曰：「君子謀道不謀食。耕也，餒在其中矣；學也，祿在其中矣。君子憂道不憂貧。」
Confucius: "Gentleman think of Tao (way) not think of food living. Even farming, there is famine hunger; learning, Official post is within. Gentleman worry Tao (way) not worry poorness."
33) 子曰：「知及之，仁不能守之，雖得之，必失之。知及之，仁能守之；不莊以蒞之，則民不敬。知及之，仁能守之，莊以蒞之；動之不以禮，未善也。」
Confucius: "know how to govern, Ren (humanity) cannot guard, although get country, definitely lose it. Know how to govern, Ren (humanity) can guard; not treat right the citizens, people do not respect. Know how to govern, Ren (humanity) can guard, able treat right the citizens; actions not according to Rites, not perfect."
34) 子曰：「君子不可小知，而可大受也；小人不可大受，而可小知也。」
Confucius: "Gentleman cannot small know, but can big use; petty person cannot big use, but can small know."
35) 子曰：「民之於仁也，甚於水火。水火，吾見蹈而死者矣；未見蹈仁而死者也。」
Confucius: "people in need of Ren (humanity), greater than water & fire. Water & fire, I see people die in them; never see people die in Ren (humanity)."
36) 子曰：「當仁，不讓於師。」
Confucius: "for Ren (humanity), not let first Teacher."
37) 子曰：「君子貞而不諒。」
Confucius: "Gentleman believe in Truth but has small giving."
38) 子曰：「事君，敬其事而後其食。」
Confucius: "administer Emperor, respect the works then think about food salary."
39) 子曰：「有教無類。」
Confucius: "education without selecting pupils."
40) 子曰：「道不同，不相為謀。」
Confucius :"Tao (way) not the same, not together discussing plans."
41) 子曰：「辭，達而已矣！」
Confucius: "words, reach meaning enough!"
42) 師冕見。及階，子曰：「階也。」及席，子曰：「席也。」皆坐，子告之曰：「某在斯，某在斯。」師冕出。子張問曰：「與師言之道與？」子曰：「然，固相師之道也！」
Blind Musician Shi Mian sees Confucius. At stairs, Confucius: "this is stairs." At seat, Confucius: "this is seat." After seating, Confucius tells: "this is who, this is who." Blind Musician Shi Mian exits. Student Zi Zhang asks: "is this the way to talk to him?" Confucius: "of course, this is the way to talk to blind musician!"
1) 季氏將伐顓臾。冉有季路見於孔子曰：「季氏將有事於顓臾。」孔子曰：「求，無乃爾是過與？夫顓臾，昔者先王以為東蒙主，且在邦域之中矣，是社稷之臣也，何以伐為？」冉有曰：「夫子欲之，吾二臣者，皆不欲也。」孔子曰：「求！周任有言曰：『陳力就列，不能者止。』危而不持，顛而不扶，則將焉用彼相矣？且爾言過矣！虎兕出於柙，龜玉毀於櫝中，是誰之過與？」冉有曰：「今夫顓臾，固而近於費；今不取，後世必為子孫憂。」孔子曰：「求！君子疾夫舍曰欲之，而必為之辭。丘也，聞有國有家者，不患寡而患不均，不患貧而患不安。蓋均無貧，和無寡，安無傾。夫如是，故遠人不服，則脩文德以來之；既來之，則安之。今由與求也，相夫子，遠人不服而不能來也；邦分崩離析，而不能守也；而謀動干戈於邦內。吾恐季孫之憂，不在顓臾，而在蕭牆之內也！」
The person Ji is about to invade Place Zhuan Yu. Student Ran You & Student Zi Lu come see Confucius: "person Ji has affairs in Place Zhuan Yu." Confucius: "Student Zi Lu, isn't this your fault? Place Zhuan Yu, is past King give place as Emperor, is partner in country, is small country official, why invade?" Student Ran You: "emperor want to invade, we two officials, cannot stop." Confucius: "Student Zi Lu! Dynasty Zhou has saying official can offer services stay, cannot leave. Now danger cannot care, wrong cannot stop, why still accompany your emperor? This is you say wrong! Tiger & cow out of cage, jade tortoise destroy in cabinet, is caretaker's fault not?" Student Ran You: "today Emperor Zhuan Yu, is near our country; today not invade, later generations definitely endanger our offsprings." Confucius: "Student Zi Lu! Gentleman hate is what you desire, but do not say. Student Ran You, hear have country have home, only worry money distribution not equal, not worry poorness but worry no peace. No afraid poorness, no citizens, only afraid no peace. If your emperor invades, distance people no respect, distant country respect is from cultivate virtues come; since come, then pacify them. Today Student Ran You & Student Zi Lu, accompany emperor, distance people not respect will not come; country divide & un-united, cannot be guard; and planning attack within country. I afraid person Ji offsprings worry, is not in Place Zhuan Yu, but within Country Lu Emperor!"
2) 孔子曰：「天下有道，則禮樂征伐自天子出；天下無道，則禮樂征伐自諸侯出。自諸侯出，蓋十世希不失矣。自大夫出，五世希不失矣。陪臣執國命，三世希不失矣。天下有道，則政不在大夫。天下有道，則庶人不議。」
Confucius: "under Heaven has Tao (way), then Rites & wars order comes from Emperor; under Heaven no Tao (way), then rites & war orders come from sub-countries. From sub-countries, power not spread pass 10 generations. From sub-sub-countries, power not spread pass 5 generations. From accompany officials executing country orders, power not spread pass 3 generations. Under Heaven has Tao (way), the government not under sub-sub-countries. Under Heaven has Tao (way), then citizens do not comment."
3) 孔子曰：「祿之去公室，五世矣。政逮於大夫，四世矣。故夫三桓之子孫，微矣。」
Confucius: "elect Official power gone from Emperor, already 5 generations. The government power in sub-sub-countries, already 4 generations. Therefore sub-sub-countries emperor San Huan power in offsprings, disappearing."
4) 孔子曰：「益者三友，損者三友：友直，友諒，友多聞，益矣；友便辟，友善柔，友便佞，損矣。」
Confucius: "beneficial friends have three, bad friends have three: upright friends, honest friends, knowledgeable friends, are good; submitting friends, dishonest friends, bad influence friends, are bad."
5) 孔子曰：「益者三樂，損者三樂：樂節禮樂，樂道人之善，樂多賢友，益矣；樂驕樂，樂佚遊，樂宴樂，損矣。」
Confucius: "good hobbies have three, bad hobbies have three: love Rites, love say people good, love make virtuous friends, are good; love proudness, love loitering, love dinner fun, are bad."
6) 孔子曰：「待於君子有三愆；言未及之而言，謂之躁；言及之而不言，謂之隱；未見顏色而言，謂之瞽。」
Confucius: "with Gentleman conversation have 3 mistakes; not supposed to say but say, is hurried; supposed to say but don't say, is hiding; never see facial colours and say, is blindness."
7) 孔子曰：「君子有三戒：少之時，血氣未定，戒之在色；及其壯也，血氣方剛，戒之在鬬；及其老也，血氣既衰，戒之在得。」
Confucius: "Gentleman has 3 must-nots: when young, blood air not fixed, must not on sex; when growth up, blood air strong, must not on fight; when old become, blood air dropping, must not on getting."
8) 孔子曰：「君子有三畏：畏天命，畏大人，畏聖人之言。小人不知天命而不畏也，狎大人，侮聖人之言。」
Confucius: "Gentleman have 3 scare: "scare of Heaven Mandate, scare of virtuous People, scare of Sage's sayings. Petty person do not know Heaven Mandate therefore not scare, disrespect virtuous People, insult Sage's sayings."
9) 孔子曰：「生而知之者，上也；學而知之者，次者；困而學之，又其次也；困而不學，民斯為下矣！」
Confucius: "born & know with, first class; learn then know, second class; trapped then learn, third class; trapped & do not learn, these people are the lowest class!"
10) 孔子曰：「君子有九思：視思明，聽思聰，色思溫，貌思恭，言思忠，事思敬，忿思難，見得思義。」
Confucius: "Gentleman has 3 think of: see think of sharp, hear think of clear, facial think of gentle, expression think of respect, words think of truthful, administer think of responsible, angry think of difficulties, see can-get think of Righteousness."
11) 孔子曰：「『見善如不及，見不善如探湯。』吾見其人矣，吾聞其語矣！『隱居以求其志，行義以達其道。』吾聞其語矣，未見其人也！」
Confucius: "see good like unable self to catch up, see bad like touching hot soup. I have seen such person, I have heard these words! Seclusion to aim his goals, do righteousness to reach the Tao (way). I have heard these words, but I have never seen such person!"
12) 齊景公有馬千駟，死之日，民無德而稱焉。伯夷、叔齊餓於首陽之下，民到于今稱之。『誠不以富，亦祇以異。』其斯之謂與？
The emperor Qi Jing Gong has 1000 horses, day he dies, the people do not have any virtues to say of him. Person Bo Yi, Person Shu Qi die of hunger at Place Shou Yang, people till today still praise. "Sincerity is not through wealth, to respect different." Is it just like that?
13) 陳亢問於伯魚曰：「子亦有異聞乎？」對曰：「未也。嘗獨立，鯉趨而過庭。曰：『學詩乎？』對曰：『未也。』『不學詩，無以言！』鯉退而學詩。他日，又獨立，鯉趨而過庭。曰：『學禮乎？』對曰：『未也。』『不學禮，無以立！』鯉退而學禮。聞斯二者。」陳亢退而喜曰：「問一得三：聞詩，聞禮，又聞君子之遠其子也。」
Student Chen Kang asks Confucius' son Bo Yu: "Confucius have taught you any different?" Answer: "no. Once alone with him, I walk past the courtyard. Confucius: have learnt poems? I answer: no. Confucius: do not learn poems, cannot talk. I go back & learn poems. Another day, again alone, I walk pass the courtyard. Confucius: have learnt Rites? Answers: no. Confucius: "not learn Rites, cannot establish! I go back & learn Rites. Only have these 2 alone encounters." Student Chen Kang go back & happily say: "ask one get three: know poems, know Rites, & know Gentleman no different treating his children."
14) 邦君之妻；君稱之曰「夫人」，夫人自稱曰「小童」，邦人稱之曰「君夫人」，稱諸異邦曰「寡小君」；異邦人稱之，亦曰「君夫人」。
Country Emperor's wife: Emperor call her "wife", she call herself "little girl", country people call her "Emperor wife", to other country people she calls herself "lowly wife"; other country people call her, is "Emperor wife".
1) 陽貨欲見孔子，孔子不見，歸孔子豚。孔子時其亡也，而往拜之，遇諸塗。謂孔子曰：「來，予與爾言。」曰：「懷其寶而迷其邦，可謂仁乎？」曰：「不可。」「好從事而亟失時，可謂知乎？」曰：「不可。」「日月逝矣，歲不我與！」孔子曰：「諾，吾將仕矣！」
The official Yang Huo wants to see Confucius, Confucius does not want see, give Confucius a roasted pig. Confucius waits him not at his home, go & return visit, on way back meet him. Ask Confucius: "come, let me talk with you." Say: "have treasure & not use on country, is that Ren (humanity)?" Confucius: "no." "Like to do official works but always miss chance, can say wise?" Confucius: "no." "day & night pass, years do not wait for us!" Confucius: "promise, I will become a Official!"
2) 子曰：「性相近也，習相遠也。」
Confucius: "nature is similar, habits make them different."
3) 子曰：「唯上知餘與下愚不移。」
Confucius: "only highest know-things & lowest stupid do not change."
4) 子之武城，聞弦歌之聲，夫子莞爾而笑曰：「割雞焉用牛刀？」子游對曰：「昔者，偃也聞諸夫子曰：『君子學道則愛人，小人愛道則易使也。』」子曰：「二三子！偃之言是也。前言戲之耳！」
Confucius in City Wu, hear chinese violins music, Confucius very happy & laugh: "slaughter chicken why need cow knife?" Student Zi You answers: "in past, I hear you Master say: "Gentleman learn Tao (way) will love people, petty people learn Tao (way) will be easy to govern." Confucius to other Students: "you students! What he says is right. My previous statement is just a passing joke!"
5) 公山弗擾以費畔，召。子欲往。子路不說，曰：「末之也已，何必公山氏之之也？」子曰：「夫召我者，而豈徒哉？如有用我者，吾其為東周乎！」
The emperor Gong Shan start war in City Fei, asks for Confucius. Confucius wants to go. Student Zi Lu not happy, says: "Tao (way) cannot execute is ok, why go to the emperor Gong Shan?" Confucius: "person asks for me, is it no sincerity? If use me, I will make a Eastern Zhou government!"
6) 子張問仁於孔子。孔子曰：「能行五者於天下，為仁矣。」「請問之？」曰：「恭、寬、信、敏、惠。恭則不侮，寬則得眾，信則人任焉，敏則有功，惠則足以使人。」
Student Zi Zhang asks Ren (humanity) from Confucius." Confucius: "able to do these 5 things to under Heaven, is Ren (humanity)." "Can ask?" Confucius: "respectful, forgiveness, trustworthiness, hardworking, give gratitude. Respectful then no get insult, forgiveness then get crowd, trustworthiness then people give duty, hardworking then have results, give gratitude then able to govern people."
7) 佛肸召，子欲往。子路曰：「昔者由也聞諸夫子曰：『親於其身為不善者，君子不入也。』佛肸以中牟畔，子之往也，如之何？」子曰：「然，有是言也。不曰堅乎？磨而不磷；不曰白乎？涅而不緇。吾豈匏瓜也哉？焉能繫而不食！」
The emperor Fo Xi asks for Confucius, Confucius wants to go. Student Zi Lu: "last time I heard you said: to be personal involved in no good person, Gentleman does not involve. Now the emperor Fo Xi is doing rebellion, Confucius now going, how?" Confucius: "yes, I have said. No say white? Jade grind still white. Am I a melon that bad? Can be used not use!"
8) 子曰：「由也，女聞六言六蔽矣乎？」對曰：「未也。」「居！吾語女；好仁不好學，其蔽也愚；好知不好學，其蔽也蕩；好信不好學，其蔽也賊；好直不好學，其蔽也絞；好勇不好學，其蔽也亂；好剛不好學，其蔽也狂。」
Confucius: "Student Zi Lu, have you heard of 6 speech about 6 disadvantage." Answers: "no." "sit! I tell you; love Ren (humanity) but not hardworking to learn, its disadvantage is stupidity; love know but not hardworking to learn, its disadvantage is ill-discipline; love trustworthiness but not hardworking to learn, its disadvantage is harmful; love upright but not hardworking to learn, its disadvantage is fighting; love courage but not hardworking to learn, its disadvantage is chaos; love hardness but not hardworking to learn, its disadvantage is wildness."
9) 子曰：「小子！何莫學夫詩？詩：可以興，可以觀，可以羣，可以怨。邇之事父，遠之事君。多識於鳥、獸、草、木之名。」
Confucius: "Students! Why not learn Poem Scripture? Poetry Scripture: can make agitated, can make observant of situations, can relate to emotions, can hate the bad government. Near can administer father, far can administer Emperor. More know in birds, animals, grass, trees of names."
10) 子謂伯魚曰：「女為周南召南矣乎？人而不為周南召南，其猶正牆面而立也與！」
Confucius tells his son Bo Yu: "you know Poem Scripture Chapter Zhou Nan & Chapter Zhao Nan not? If person do not know Poem Scripture Chapter Zhou Nan & Chapter Zhao Nan, is like standing right to a wall cannot go ahead!"
11) 子曰：「禮云禮云，玉帛云乎哉？樂云樂云，鐘鼓云乎哉？」
Confucius: "say this is Rite that is Rite, no respect on treasure? Say this is Music that is Music, just knocking on drums?"
12) 子曰：「色厲而內荏，譬諸小人，其猶穿窬之盜也與！」
Confucius: "appearance scary but inner side scared, describing petty person, like crossing walls to steal thieves!"
13) 子曰：「鄉原，德之賊也！」
Confucius: "acting gentleman, virtues thieves!"
14) 子曰：「道聽而涂說，德之棄也！」
Confucius: "hear from spread immediately without confirming, virtues abandoning!"
15) 子曰：「鄙夫！可與事君也與哉？其未得之也，患得之。既得之，患失之；茍患失之，無所不至矣！」
Confucius: "despicable persons! Can be with them administering Emperor? Before they get, afraid cannot get. When get, afraid lose; when afraid cannot get & afraid lose, not a thing they will not do!"
16) 子曰：「古者民有三疾，今也或是之亡也。古之狂也肆，今之狂也蕩；古之矜也廉，今之矜也忿戾；古之愚也直，今之愚也詐而已矣。」
Confucius: "ancient people has 3 sickness, today even these also don't have. Ancient wild people dare to speak up, today wild people anyhow do; ancient conservative people are difficult to be with, today conservative people are bad tempered; ancient stupid people are upright, today stupid people want to cheat for self."
17) 子曰：「巧言令色，鮮矣仁。」
Confucius: "flattery words & acting expression, few reach Ren."
18) 子曰：「惡紫之奪朱也，惡鄭聲之亂雅樂也，惡利口之覆邦家者。」
Confucius: "I hate purple which robs blue, I hate country Zheng music which confused Music Ya, I hate eloquent mouth people collapsing countries."
19) 子曰：「予欲無言！」子貢曰：「子如不言，則小子何述焉？」子曰：「天何言哉？四時行為焉，百物生焉，天何言哉？」
Confucius: "I desire to teach without speak!" Student Zi Gong: "Master if do not speak, how we students know what you mean?" Confucius: "Heaven where have speak? Four seasons actions only, all things just born, Heaven where have speak?"
20) 孺悲欲見孔子，孔子辭以疾。將命者出戶，取瑟而歌，使之聞之。
The person Ru Bei wants to see Confucius: Confucius refuses saying of sickness. When he about to leave, Confucius take out violin & sing, let him hear that he don't want to see him.
21) 宰我問：「三年之喪，期已久矣！君子三年不為禮，禮必壞；三年不為樂，樂必崩。舊榖既沒，新榖既升，鑽隧改火，期可已矣！」子曰：「食夫稻，衣夫錦，於女安乎？」曰：「安！」「女安，則為之！夫君子之居喪，食旨不甘，聞樂不樂，居處不安，故不為也。今女安，則為之！」宰我出。子曰：「予之不仁也，子生三年，然後免於父母之懷。夫三年之喪，天下之通喪也。予也，有三年之愛於其父母乎？」
Student Zai Wo asks: "3 years of mourning, period too long! Gentleman 3 years no Rite, Rite will rusty; 3 years no Music, Music will rusty. Old rice eat finished, new rice plant out, wood to get fire become new, therefore period too long!" Confucius: "in mourning you eat good rice, wear good clothings, your heart comfortable?" Answers: "comfortable!" Confucius: "you comfortable, then do it! Gentleman in mourning, eat good not feel good, hear music not feel music, rest not comfortable, therefore do not. You comfortable, then do it!" Student Zai Wo exits. Confucius: "he is not Ren (humanity), son born 3 years, then out of parents' care. Gentleman 3 years mourning, under Heaven throughout mourning. He, have 3 years love for parents?"
22) 子曰：「飽食終日，無所用心，難矣哉！不有博奕者乎？為之猶賢乎已！」
Confucius: "eat full whole day, nothing to use heart, difficult to accomplish anything! Why not play chess game? Better than waste time!"
23) 子路曰：「君子尚勇乎？」子曰：「君子義以為上。君子有勇而無義為亂，小人有勇而無義為盜。」
Student Zi Lu: "Gentleman love courage?" Confucius: "Gentleman is Righteousness as first. Gentleman has courage but no Righteousness then make trouble, petty person has courage and no Righteousness become robbers."
24) 子貢曰：「君子亦有惡乎？」子曰：「有惡。惡稱人之惡者，惡居下流而訕上者，惡勇而無禮者，惡果敢而窒者。」曰：「賜也亦有惡乎？」「惡徼以為知者，惡不孫以為勇者，惡訐以為直者。」
Student Zi Gong: "Gentleman have hate people?" Confucius: "I have hate people. Hate those who speak ill of others people, hate those who are below positions say bad things about above positions, hate those who is courage but no Rites people, hate those who dare to do but not know things people." Confucius: "Student Zi Gong also have hate people?" Student Zi Gong: "hate those who get other results & say they know people, hate those not humble & think they are courageous people, hate those who expose others weakness & think upright people."
25) 子曰：「唯女子與小人為難養也！近之則不孫，遠之則怨。」
Confucius: "only females & petty persons difficult to be with! Too near they become unrespectful, too far they become resentment."
26) 子曰：「年四十而見惡焉，其終也已！」
Confucius: "age 40 till do evil, then it is over!"
1) 微子去之，箕子為之奴，比干諫而死。孔子曰：「殷有三仁焉！」
Person Wei Zi leave Country, Person Ji Zi becomes slave, Person Bi Gan advises emperor & get killed. Confucius: "Dynasty Yin have 3 Ren (humanity) Persons!"
2) 柳下惠為士師，三黜。人曰：「子未可以去乎？」曰：「直道而事人，焉往而不三黜？枉道而事人，何必去父母之邦？」
Person Liu Xia Hui becomes Official, 3 times been terminated. Person: "why don't you try other countries?" Answers: "straight Tao (way) to administer people, where got no 3 times been terminated? Bypass Tao (way) to administer people, why need to leave parents' Country?"
3) 齊景公待孔子，曰：「苦季氏則吾不能，以季、孟之間待之。」曰：「吾老矣，不能用也。」孔子行。
Emperor Qi Jing Gong with Confucius, says: "I cannot give post like Country Lu, but can give lower official post." Then later: "I am old, cannot use Confucius." Confucius leaves Country.
4) 齊人歸女樂。季桓子受之，三日不朝。孔子行。
The country Qi gives female musicians to Country Lu. Emperor Ji Huan Zi receives, 3 days do not come meeting. Confucius leaves Country.
5) 楚狂接輿，歌而過孔子，曰：「鳳兮！鳳兮！何德之衰？往者不可諫，來者猶可追。已而！已而！今之從政者殆而！」孔子下，欲與之言；趨而辟之，不得與之言。
Country Chu lunatic named Jie Yu, sing song over Confucius, says: "Phoenix! Phoenix! What virtues declining? The past cannot advise, the future still can change. Stop! Stop! Today governmenting official is in danger with emperors!" Confucius alights, wants to speak with him, he avoids & leaves, cannot speak with.
6) 長沮、桀溺耦而耕。孔子過之，使子路問津焉。長沮曰：「夫執輿者為誰？」子路曰：「為孔丘。」曰：「是魯孔丘與？」曰：「是也。」曰：「是知津矣！」問於桀溺，桀溺曰：「子為誰？」曰：「為仲由。」曰：「是魯孔丘之徒與？」對曰：「然。」曰：「滔滔者，天下皆是也；而誰以易之？且而與其從辟人之士也，豈若從辟世之士哉？」耰而不輟。子路行以告。夫子憮然曰：「鳥獸不可與同羣，吾非斯人之徒與而誰與？天下有道，丘不與易也。」
Person Zhang Ju, Person Jie Ni are farming. Confucius crossing river, asks Student Zi Lu where to cross river. Person Zhang Ju: "the Master riding the cart is who?" Student Zi Lu: "is Confucius." Says: "is Country Lu's Confucius?" Answers: "yes." Says: "then He know where the river crossing is (don't say)." Asks Person Jie Ni, Person Jie Ni: "Gentleman is who?" Student Zi Lu: "is Confucius." Says: "you are Country Lu's Confucius's Disciple?" Answers: "yes." Says: "chaos, under Heaven everywhere; who can pacify it? Instead of going against people, why not go seclusion like us?" Student Zi Lu no choice come back. Student Zi Lu tells Confucius what happens. Confucius signs: "birds & animals we can go together, if not with people then with who? If under Heaven has Tao (way), then I need to spread Tao (way)."
7) 子路從而後，遇丈人，以仗荷蓧。子路問曰：「子見夫子乎？」丈人曰：「四體不勤，五榖不分，孰為夫子？」植其杖而芸。子路拱而立。止子路宿，殺雞為黍而食之，見其二子焉。明日，子路行以告。子曰：「隱者也。」使子路反見之。至，則行矣。子路曰：「不仕無義。長幼之節，不可廢也；君臣之義，如之何其廢之？欲潔其身，而亂大倫。君子之仕也，行其義也。道之不行，已知之矣！」
Student Zi Lu is lost behind Confucius, meet old Man, using staff to cut weeds. Student Zi Lu: "have you seen my Master?" Old Man: "you 4 legs not hardworking, 5 grains cannot differentiate, who is your Master?" Continue using staff to cut weeds. Student Zi Lu bows & stands. Old Man give home for Student Zi Lu to live, kill chicken for their dinner, make his 2 sons see Student Zi Lu. Next day, Student Zi Lu tells Confucius. Confucius: "Gentleman in seclusion." Asks Student Zi Lu to return to him. When reach his house, he is not at home. Student Zi Lu leaves behind Confucius' message: "you not become Official is unrighteousness. Senior & juniors Rites, cannot be forsaken; Emperor & Official Righteousness, how to be forsaken? When desire to seclude to cleanness, then confuse big Virtues. Gentleman's Official post, is executing his Righteousness. Tao (way) cannot be implemented, already know!"
8) 逸民：伯夷、叔齊、虞仲、夷逸、朱張、柳下惠、少連。子曰：「不降其志，不辱其身，伯夷叔齊與！」謂柳下惠，少連：「降志辱身矣，言中倫，行中慮，其斯而已矣！」謂虞仲、夷逸：「隱居放言，身中清，廢中權。」「我則異於是，無可無不可。」
Famous People: Person Bo Yi, Person Shu Qi, Person Yu Zhong, Person Yi Yi, Person Zhu Zhang, Person Liu Xia Hui, Person Shao Lian. Confucius: "no lower their ambitions, no shame their bodies, are Person Bo Yi & Person Shu Qi!" For Liu Xia Hui, Person Shao Lian: "lower ambitions & shame bodies, speeches right, actions careful, only like that!" For Person Yu Zhong, Yi Yi: "go seclusion many speech, body clean, correct in authority." "I different, no have no have not."
9) 大師摯適齊，亞飯干適楚，三飯繚適蔡，四飯缺適秦，鼓方叔入於河，播鼗武入於漢，少師陽、擊磬襄，入於海。

10) 周公謂魯公曰：「君子不施其親，不使大臣怨乎不以，故舊無大故，則不棄也；無求備於一人。」
Sage-King Zhou Gong tells his son Country Lu Emperor: "Gentleman do not forsake relatives, not let big Officials resent for not being used, therefore old Officials if no big mistake, cannot be abandoned; not ask everything from one person."
11) 周有八士：伯達、伯拾、仲突、仲忽、叔夜、叔夏、季随、季騧。
Zhou Dynasty have 8 Gentlemen: Person Bo Da, Person Bo Shi, Person Zhong Tu, Person Zhong Hu, Person Shu Ye, Person Shu Xia, Person Ji Sui, Person Ji Gua.
1) 子張曰：「士見危致命，見得思義，祭思敬，喪思哀，其可已矣。」
Student Zi Zhang: "Gentleman see danger sacrifice life, see can-get think Righteousness, praying think respect, mourning think sadness, then Person complete."
2) 子張曰：「執德不弘，信道不篤，焉能為有？焉能為亡？」
Student Zi Zhang: "have Virtues not spread, believe Tao (way) not strong, like have not? The persons like need not have?"
3) 子夏之門人，問交於子張。子張曰：「子夏云何？」對曰：「子夏曰：『可者與之，其不可者拒之。』」子張曰：「異乎吾所聞：『君子尊賢而容眾，嘉善而矜不能。』我之大賢與，於人何所不容？我之不賢與，人將拒我，如之何其拒人也！」
Student Zi Xia's Disciple, asks about making friends from Student Zi Zhang. Student Zi Zhang: "Student Zi Xia says what?" Answers: "can persons be with, cannot persons not be with." Student Zi Zhang: "this is different from what I heard: Gentleman respect virtuous people & accept public, praise the capable & pity the incapable. If I am big virtuous, what kind of people I cannot accept? If I am not virtuous, people reject me, how am I supposed to reject people!"
4) 子夏曰：「雖小道，必有可觀者焉；致遠恐泥，是以君子不為也。」
Student Zi Xia: "even small Tao (way), definitely have can see things; but when aim far afraid will stop, therefore Gentleman do not do (small Tao)."
5) 子夏曰：「日知其所亡，月無忘其所能，可謂好學也已矣！」
Student Zi Xia: "everyday know what you don't know, every month not forget what you know, can say hardworking person!"
6) 子夏曰：「博學而篤志，切問而近思，仁在其中矣。」
Student Zi Xia: "knowledgeable & aim ambitions, have questions & think, Ren (humanity) is within self."
7) 子夏曰：「百工居肆以成其事，君子學以致其道。」
Student Zi Xia: "hundred skills is in determined learning to achieve something, Gentleman learn the same to reach Tao (way)."
8) 子夏曰：「小人之過也必文。」
Student Zi Xia: "petty person makes mistake definitely covered up."
9) 子夏曰：「君子有三變：望之儼然，即之也溫，聽其言也厲。」
Student Zi Xia: "Gentleman has 3 appearance changes: from far strict, when approached gentle, hear his words straightforward."
10) 子夏曰：「君子信而後勞其民；未信，則以為厲己也。信而後諫；未信，則以為謗己也。」
Student Zi Xia: "Gentleman need trust then labour the people; before trust, will think he is torturing them. Need trust before saying mistakes; before trust, will think slandering him."
11) 子夏曰：「大德不踰閑，小德出入可也。」
Student Zi Xia: "big Virtues cannot go against, small virtues can varied."
12) 子游曰：「子夏之門人小子，當洒掃應對進退則可矣，抑末也；本之則無，如之何？」子夏聞之曰：「噫！言游過矣！君子之道，孰先傳焉？孰後倦焉？譬諸草木，區以別矣。君子之道，焉可誣也？有始有卒者，其惟聖人乎！」
Student Zi You: "under Student Zi Xia's Disciples, when in cleaning doorways & in enter & exit rites can, only those useless details; foundations principle do not have, how can?" Student Zi Xia hears & answers: "oh! say Student Zi You over! Gentleman Tao (way), how can teach first? Where will teach last if tired? Like all kinds of grass & trees, have categories as different. Gentleman Tao (way), how can different? If beginning everyone the same teachings, only Sage can do it!"
13) 子夏曰：「仕而優則學，學而優則仕。」
Student Zi Xia: "Official if have excess time must study, study if have excess time must become Official."
14) 子游曰：「喪致乎哀而止。」
Student Zi You: "mourning to able sadness is enough."
15) 子游曰：「吾友張也，為難能也，然而未仁。」
Student Zi You: "my friend Zhang, have many difficult capabilities, but not yet Ren (humanity)."
16) 曾子曰：「堂堂乎張也，難與並為仁矣！」
Student Zeng Zi: "good appearance Student Zi Zhang, but hard to teach others of Ren (humanity)."
17) 曾子曰：「吾聞諸夫子：『人未有自致者也，必有親喪乎！』」
Student Zeng Zi: "I heard Master says: those people who have not expressed true feelings, will definitely during parents mourning!"
18) 曾子曰：「吾聞諸夫子：『孟莊子之孝也，其他可能也；其不改父之臣與父之政，是難能也。』」
Student Zeng Zi: "I heard Master says: Person Meng Zhuang's Filial Piety, other things are possible; only not change father's old Officials & not change father's Government, is hard to do."
19) 孟氏使陽膚為士師，問於曾子。曾子曰：「上失其道，民散久矣！如得其情，則哀矜而勿喜！」
Official Meng uses Student Zeng Zi's Student Yang Fu as court Official, asks Student Zeng Zi. Student Zeng Zi: "upper level already lose Tao (way), people lose touch very long! When giving judgements, should pity them not happy!"
20) 子貢曰：「紂之不善，不如是之甚也。是以君子惡居下流，天下之惡皆歸焉。」
Student Zi Gong: "tyrant Zhou not good, is not that bad. Therefore for Gentleman afraid in bad residing below, under Heaven everyone says bad all go to."
21) 子貢曰：「君子之過也，如日月之食焉；過也，人皆見之；更也，人皆仰之。」
Student Zi Gong: "Gentleman's mistake, like solar & lunar eclipse; mistake, everyone see; when correct, everyone respect back."
22) 衛公孫朝問於子貢曰：「仲尼焉學？」子貢曰：「文武之道，未墜於地，在人。賢者識其大者，不賢者識其小者，莫不有文武之道焉。夫子焉不學，而亦何常師之有！」
Country Wei Official Gong Sun asks Student Zi Gong: "Confucius learn from whom?" Student Zi Gong: "Sage-King Wen & Sage-King Wu's Tao (way), not lost, within people books. Virtuous Persons who know big, non-virtuous persons who know small, all have Sage-King Wen & Sage-King Wu's Tao (way). Confucius is also learning, where need Teacher!"
23) 叔孫武叔語大夫於朝曰：「子貢賢於仲尼。」子服景伯以告子貢。子貢曰：「譬之宮牆：賜之牆也及肩，窺見室家之好；夫子之牆數仞，不得其門而入，不見宗廟之美，百官之富。得其門者或寡矣！夫子之云，不亦宜乎？」
The official Shu Sun Wu Shu tells Officials during session: "Student Zi Gong is better than Confucius." Person Zi Fu Jing Bo tells Student Zi Gong. Zi Gong: "like court walls: my court walls height to shoulder, can peek into the good of room; Confucius court walls many metres higher, without door way in, cannot see temple beautiful, hundred officials wealth. Those who get into door way few! Official Shu Sun Wu saying, isn't it wrong?"
24) 叔孫武叔毀仲尼。子貢曰：「無以為也！仲尼不可毀也。他人之賢者，丘陵也，猶可踰也；仲尼，日月也，無得而踰焉。人雖欲自绝，其何傷於日月乎？多見其不知量也！」
The official Su Sun Wu Shu says bad things about Confucius. Student Zi Gong: "no use! Confucius cannot be destroyed. Other people virtues, as most high as mountain, can overcome; Confucius, high as sun & moon, no one can overcome. People want to destroy, how harm can be done to sun & moon? Only see his ignorance!"
25) 陳子禽謂子貢曰：「子為恭也，仲尼豈賢於子乎？」子貢曰：「君子一言以為知，一言以為不知，言不可不慎也！夫子之不可及也，猶天之不可階而升也。夫子之得邦家者，所謂『立之斯立，道之斯行，綏之斯來，動之斯和。』其生也榮，其死也哀。如之何其可及也？」
Person Chen Zi Qin tells Student Zi Gong: "you are humble only, Confucius where got better than you?" Student Zi Gong: "Gentleman one word can tell know, one word can tell don't know, words cannot not careful! Confucius cannot be reached, like Heaven cannot used ladder to reach. If Confucius get country to govern, then use rites to establish, Tao (way) to implement, Ren (humanity) Government to govern, people move accordingly. His living is glorify, his death brings sorrow. This how to reach?"
1) 堯曰：「咨！爾舜！天之曆數在爾躬，允執其中！四海困窮，天祿永終。」舜亦以命禹。曰：「予小子履，敢用玄牡，敢昭告于皇皇后帝：有罪不敢赦，帝臣不蔽，簡在帝心！朕躬有罪，無以萬方；萬方有罪，罪在朕躬。」「周有大賚，善人是富。」「雖有周親，不如仁人；百姓有過，在予一人。」「謹權量，審法度，修廢官；四方之政行焉。興滅國，繼绝世，舉逸民，天下之民歸心焉。所重：民，食，喪，祭。寬則得眾，信則民任焉，敏則有功，公則說。」
Sage-King Yao: "ah! Sage-King Shun! Heaven Mandate date inside, given to you! If four seas become poor, heaven happiness forever stop." Sage-King Shun give Mandate to Sage-King Yu. Sage-King Tang: "I Sage-King Tang, dare to use cow as sacrifice, dare to report to God, have sins dare not ask for forgiveness, God & me not hiding, all in your Heart! I have sins, unable to govern everywhere; if everywhere has sins, sins are in me." "Dynasty Zhou have good rewards, good people are rich." "Even though have Dynasty Zhou relatives, not as good as Ren (humanity) people; people have sins, fault is in me alone." "Careful power capacity, examine law system, repair abolished Official posts; everywhere government implemented. Reinstate gone Sub-Countries, continue lost Official offsprings, put good citizens into Official posts, under Heaven people hearts come. Treasure: people, foods, mourning, praying. Forgiving get people, trustworthy get people to duty, hardworking get merits, justice get happy people."
2) 子張問於孔子曰：「何如斯可以從政矣？」子曰：「尊五美，屏四惡，斯可以從政矣。」子張曰：「何謂五美？」子曰：「君子惠而不費，勞而不怨，欲而不貪，泰而不驕，威而不猛。」子張曰：「何謂惠而不費？」子曰：「因民之所利而利之，斯不亦惠而不費乎？擇可勞而勞之，又誰怨？欲仁而得仁，又焉貪？君子無眾寡，無小大，無敢慢，斯不亦泰而不驕乎？君子正其衣冠，尊其瞻視，儼然人望而畏之，斯不亦威而不猛乎？」子張問：「何謂四惡？」子曰：「不教而殺謂之虐。不戒視成謂之暴。慢令致期謂之賊。猶之與人也，出納之吝，謂之有司。」
Student Zi Zhang asks Confucius: "how to able to go Government?" Confucius: "respect 5 beauty, get rid 4 evils, then can go Government." Student Zi Zhang: "which 5 beauty?" Confucius: "Gentleman give gratitude & not waste, hardworking & not resentment, desire & not greed, confidence & not proud, scary & not violent." Student Zi Zhang: "what is give gratitude & not waste?" Confucius: "where people needs benefits give benefits, then isn't it give gratitude & not waste? Choose hardworking & hardworking do, who will resent? Desire Ren (humanity) & get Ren (humanity), where is greed? Gentleman no crowd or single, no small or big, no slowness, isn't that confidence and not proud? Gentleman correct his clothings, respect his straight sight, make people look & scare, isn't that scary & not violent?" Student Zi Zhang: "what is 4 evils?" Confucius: "not teach & kill is called torture. No correct implement want to see results is called violent. Slow orders & to want fast results is called thief. Supposed to give public, out very stingy, is called small official."
3) 子曰：「不知命，無以為君子也；不知禮，無以立也；不知言，無以知人也。」
Confucius: "not know Mandate, cannot be a Gentleman; not know Rites, cannot establish; not know people words, cannot know people."
